Augmented reality allows someone to add another layer to an existing image.  For example, imagine holding your phone over a poster on the wall as if you were going to take a photo of that poster, and then instantly a video starts playing to offer you additional information about that particular poster.  Pretty cool, right?  The first time it happens, it seems like magic.
After watching the video below, I knew I had to figure this augmented reality thing out.  I was hooked, interested, amazed, and couldn't get enough... neither could my students!

Neues Leistungsschutzrecht tritt in Kraft

Am 1. August tritt das neue Leistungsschutzrecht in Kraft. Große Verlage, darunter die Axel Springer AG, Burda und Gruner + Jahr, haben Google News gestattet, weiterhin Anrisstexte zu übernehmen und zu veröffentlichen.

Zu den Verlagen, die weiterhin in Google News vertreten sein werden, gehört ausgerechnet auch die Axel Springer AG, die aber von einer "Übergangsphase" spricht. Man habe Google ein ein Opt-in zur Nutzung der Inhalte in Form von Textauszügen erteilt, "allerdings unter der Maßgabe und mit ausdrücklichem Hinweis, dass dies nur vorläufig bis zur geregelten Rechteverwertung und ohne Anerkennung der einseitig von Google gesetzten Konditionen geschieht", erklärte Verlagssprecher Hendrik Lange. Längerfristig strebe man aber eine Verwertung von Textübernahmen gemäß des Schutzrechts an.

Auch Hubert Burda Media als entschiedener Verfechter des LSR hat Google News ein Opt-in erteilt. Ähnlich verhält sich Gruner + Jahr.

I have no doubt that online education is going to get better over time, and that innovators at places like edX and Udacity will find ways to better combine labor and technology in ways that will help contain higher education costs.

"(...) True MOOCs that make almost no use of faculty labor will be very cheap to deliver, but one can easily imagine that they will be plagued by an attrition rate at least as high as what we see in today’s for-profit colleges. Blended online courses that stream lectures while also making use of face-to-face teaching assistants might have a success rate closer to land grant public institutions, where interaction with senior faculty is limited but there is a human support system for students. It should go without saying that the latter are going to be much more expensive than the former.(...)"

Christopher Gurrie: In 2008, a colleague and I set out to make it our mission to rid this world of bad PowerPoint presentations. Remember the consequences: every time you make a bad PowerPoint presentation -- God (all of them) kills a kitten.

Even if we can only influence one student at a time -- hopefully we are doing our part to make presentation land just a little bit better for our fellow audience members. After all, we're only on this Earth for a short while -- it shouldn't be spent sitting through boring presentations where the presenter reads to us from slides laden with too many words and not enough practice...
