In May the company announced a series of partnerships with state universities. Those deals include provisions for licensing one university's content for use in others' classes. 25 Ways to Cultivate Intrinsic Motivation - InformED

25 Ways to Cultivate Intrinsic Motivation - InformED | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

"In the context of learning, intrinsic motivation is motivation that stems not from external factors like grades and status, but rather from genuine interest and ambition. Like altruism, it assumes no reward. But – like altruism – it is difficult to corroborate. Even if Sally, your best student, completes the Extra Credit assignment out of pure enjoyment, it doesn’t mean she isn’t expecting external rewards like approval and attention."

Does intrinsic motivation exist? This post explores this idea, clearly landing in the field of intrinsic motivation. After exploring the concept and discussing how education has changed there is a list of 25 ways we may help students cultivate this trait. A few are listed below but many more are in the post, as is a TEDtalk by Dan Pink.

* Rethink reward

* Make mastery cool

* Make students feel like education is a choice, not a requirement

* Make every student feel confident

Each of the items has additional information in the post. As you work in your classroom this year you may find yourself using some of the ideas listed in this post with your students.

"Creativity: It's been maligned, neglected, and misunderstood. But it's finally coming into its own. Here, creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson makes the case for creativity as the crucial 21st century skill we'll need to solve today's pressing problems. Sir Ken led the British government's 1998 advisory committee on creative and cultural education and was knighted in 2003 for his achievements. His most recent book, The Element (Viking Adult, 2009), looks at human creativity and education. He is also the author of Out of Our Minds: Learning to Be Creative (Capstone Publishing Limited, 2001)."

What makes a great teacher? This post explores this question providing some insightful ideas from a variety of writings as well as two additional images that you may want to print out and share with teachers in your school.

Below are some questions you may want to consider.

* Should students be supported in risk taking, know that the end product may not be successful?

* As teachers should be be driving the train, or allowing students to share the role as conductor?

* Should students be problem solvers or should they be problem finders?

There is much food for thought in this post and you may be rethinking your teaching this year after you read it.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, August 28, 2013 3:04 AM

Abstract:

Over the last few years, higher education has been transformed by numerous technologies available for course content delivery. Whereas university instructors once asked, "Should I deliver course content online?" the emphasis has shifted so that instructors are now asking, "Which technology works best for which desired teaching outcome?," "Which technology can I quickly learn?," and "Which technology can I manage (while fulfilling my research and service duties)?" To answer these questions, the authors used and evaluated 10 different online instructional technology tools, analyzing each one's potential application in communication courses to address Angelo's four dimensions of higher learning (declarative, procedural, conditional, and reflective). The tools are compared and contrasted to assist university instructors in making informed decisions about which to use in their courses.

We continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice' | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

why [has] technology, to date, had very little impact on improved learning outcomes? This could be because we continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice to meet out-dated assessment models. Most of the world’s curriculum and assessment systems are based around fact recall rather than actually demonstrating that you have learned something and can deploy it within a problem-solving situation.

The Planetary Archives™ 's curator insight, November 17, 2013 12:12 PM

Our  education system is nothing more than child-care with some

indoctrination thown in.

See/hear "The Wall" by Pink Floyd  (40+ years ago.)

Let the children play until they are old enough to decide what they are interested in learning. That's completely different than training them from Day 1 to "sit still, be quiet, and obey authority." Training a 5-year old to become a "worker" or 'Businessman"  is not education, but it may be child abuse.

Twiddla is a free, no-setup, web-based meeting playground. Mark up websites, graphics, and photos, or start brainstorming on a blank canvas. Voice and Text chat too!

Twiddla is a real-time online collaboration tool. Its beauty is in its simplicity and accessibility: no plug-ins or downloads, no need to work around complex firewalls, no advanced scheduling. It’s available 24-7 and the only requirement is a computer with an internet connection and a web browser. It’s browser-agnostic, user friendly, and probably more fun than you're supposed to be having at work.

Learners as producers

Learners as producers | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
For the longest time teachers and lecturers have held the monopoly on the production of academic content.
LLZ Uni Halle's insight:

"(...) Although the production of content has been the preserve of the teacher and the academic since the formalisation of education, increasingly, we also see learners creating their own content. They have the tools, they own the technology, and they have the confidence to use them, not only informally, but increasingly in formal learning contexts. Many are prolific and proficient in producing blogs, podcasts, videos and photos for sharing on the web. They can do it all using the simple smartphone in their pocket. This user generated content trend is apparent not only in universities and colleges but also in the compulsory education sectors.

What are the implications of this trend? There are many of course, but in this post I want to draw your attention to just 5 key areas which I believe educators need to pay attention to. (..)"

The MoneyMaking Schemes of MOOCs - Visual Academy

The MoneyMaking Schemes of MOOCs - Visual Academy | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

MOOCs have been the most talked-about topic in online education for two years now. The New York Times even named 2012 Year of the MOOC". Since then, enrollment rates as well as the number of providers and the number of courses they offer have only continued to climb. But how long can even the wealthiest MOOC sponsors - organizations MIT, Google and Harvard - continue to offer these courses for free? As of now, the MOOC industry hasn't actually made its investors any money yet. The idea is to build support around the idea of open courseware before charging students for specific certificates of completion, college credit, and degrees. Check out the graphic below to see the financial scheme behind today's MOOC phenomenon. - See more at: http://www.onlineschools.org/visual-academy/mooc-money/#sthash.S60w3drk.NxeeXUAg.dpuf
