How chatbots will change the face of campus technology - eCampus News

How chatbots will change the face of campus technology - eCampus News | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
In the first few months of the new semester hubbub, what if there was an assistant at the beck and call of students to help them navigate the college process? While the campus faculty and staff are likely too busy during those first few days to answer all the questions on students and parent’s minds, chatbots – akin to Siri, Cortana, and Alexa – could provide the ideal digital assistant to make not only these first few days run smoothly, but also the student’s entire time on campus.

With campus technology already sorely outdated (an EDUCAUSE survey from 2013 found that the average age of student information management systems is over 13 years) AI and chatbots could be the catalysts that finally bring campus tech into the modern era.

From applying to college, to arriving on campus, declaring a major, signing up courses and eventually graduation, there are a multitude of ways bots can help to streamline the process, maybe as soon as next semester.

Competency Based Education in Moodle

Competency Based Education in Moodle | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
Damyon Wiese, Development Manager Moodle HQ and the brain behind the development of the Competencies in Moodle has shared a walk through introduction to the Moodle competencies. The presentation delivered during the MoodleMoot Australia 2016 goes through the steps involved in setting up a competency based education framework and learning plan from a standard competency system.

The new feature, which was introduced in Moodle 3.1, brings a new learning management system approach to Moodle. The site administrators can add site wide competency frameworks and learning plan templates for a new level of personalized learning in Moodle. During the presentation Damyon shows a glimpse of the possibilities and flexibility of this system by showing and explaining its use in a real context of higher education.

Why would you want to sit through someone telling you something, when so much more information is available at your fingertips whenever you want it?

But when you look at some online courses, instead of revolutionising higher education, they have often simply transported the classic lecture format to an internet audience.

Does Technology Belong in College Classrooms?

Does Technology Belong in College Classrooms? | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
Modern technology affects almost every part of modern life. Education is no different. Teachers and parents are looking to technology to help students at every level of learning. But some are concerned that the world’s love of technology may not help students as much as people believe.

EDTECH@UTRGV's curator insight, November 22, 2016 11:59 AM

I think a more appropriate question to ask is "How does technology fit into the college classroom?"

Jessica Álvarez's curator insight, November 27, 2016 6:03 PM
Yes, I also consider that "technology is shaping almost every part of our day-to-day existence, including education." Nowadays, we could find easily teachers that use the Internet in almost all of the classes. Some learners preferred take classes online - through a website. Some sites, let students ask questions and complete their work from anywhere in the world.

Moreover, this article mentioned an example of a website called Campus Technology that publishes stories about how colleges and universities use new technology. In August, the site published a survey of over 500 professors and their use of technology, where a fifty-five percent of the professors said they ask students to use study materials online before coming to class. And, more than 70 percent said they combine online materials and face-to-face teaching in their classrooms.

I also consider that the new kinds of technology becoming available will increase the availability of learning all over the world.

"So those tools are there. But the problem is that online content by itself doesn’t know how to ask you the question ‘What interests you? What motivates you?’ … The first thing a good swim teacher does is ask you a couple of questions. The first question is, ‘How do you feel about water?’ And if you don’t like water, then I change my lesson plan. … And if you love water, well maybe I push you in the deep end."

This article admits that there is a place for technology outside the classroom. It can do some things teachers cannot, like provide answers immediately when a teacher is unavailable. Bowen says teachers must accept the many things technology can do that they cannot.

To conclude,  nothing can replace the personal relationship between teachers and students, but it is essential to provide a meaningful training in the classrooms that prepare learners and teachers for the technology of tomorrow.

Paula Rios's curator insight, November 29, 2016 7:21 PM
The article starts with an introduction of a classroom project in which the professor Ashok Goel from Georgia Tech, in order to find an easier way to answer all his students' daily questions or doubts; he decided to implement a computer program in which students could get instant answers. Nowadays, this kind of projects is commonly used by teachers to facilitate their work and the learners' learning process. However, internet and online classes provides a huge platform of information and tools, but also it won't replace the relationship between students and teachers and all the experiences that brings a classroom.

Digital appetite vs. what’s on the table | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
One of the main barriers to digital courseware adoption among students is simply that it isn’t required by their instructor. However, students are well aware that personal technology can give them an edge in their studies, and they’re adopting their own methods of incorporating it. Supplemental uses of digital tools are happening unprompted, with the most prevalent use involving note-taking and research.

The Padlet is good to use when all the students have an internet connected device, a tablet, for example, and they have go in for audience polls, and short answers. The results and the responses can be seen by all on a screen in the classroom. All our classrooms have wifi and projectors which can be connected to laptops.

Padlet, c'est un chouette outil. A utiliser, surtout aussi pour son aspect visuel.
Leslie Varela's curator insight, November 14, 2016 11:47 PM
In my opinión this interesting tool contributes to create a good atmosphere where students can interact and share their knowledge and investigations with the whole class. Personally, I would like to use this tool in three different ways: 1) Create a feedback wall where students can post suggestions and express concerns anonymously. 2) Build a matching exercise on the wall and have students rearrange the photos and text to solve, and 3) Create a digital map and have students post their findings about new cultures. The main idea is to teach the topics using other alternatives in order to motivate students participation.
