During a Q&A after a reading at Duke, Jonathan Safran Foer described his writing process as “more an act of collecting than one of genesis; something created from nothing.” How did I remember that quote? I didn’t, initially, but I did take notes on my iPhone throughout the evening and then emailed them straight to Evernote. When I started writing this post, I ran a search in Evernote for “writing” and “collecting” and bam!—I had my opener!

How To Kill Learner Curiosity In 12 Easy Steps.

 

Killing a learner’s natural curiosity doesn’t happen overnight. It can take as long as 12 years, and in some rare cases even that isn’t long enough.

 

Learning environments focused on standards, assessment, and compliance allow for the implementation of research-based strategies in pursuit of streams of data to prove that learning is happening. Curiosity is nice, but it’s a monumental challenge to measure.

Do you really believe that watching a lecturer read hundreds of PowerPoint slides is making you smarter?

I asked this of a class of 105 computer science and software engineering students last semester.

An article in The Conversation argued universities should ban PowerPoint because it makes students stupid and professors boring.

I agree entirely. However, most universities will ignore this good advice because rather than measuring success by how much their students learn, universities measure success with student satisfaction surveys, among other things.

The changes began to express themselves a number of years ago in the simple reality of plummeting enrollments in each of my courses, sufficient enough to place them in danger of cancellation. My academic specialty and the program in which I teach — Judaic studies — is by nature a "niche" field, perennially challenged by modest enrollment. More recently, however, some other dynamic was clearly at work. The problem was easily enough diagnosed as having to do with an increased student demand for online learning; my program had never offered courses in this format, and I had personally determined never to entertain the idea, even as a remote option.
