"(...) But while most low-quality degree factories undoubtedly will go out of business as full colleges, a likely scenario is that the general unbundling of educational services will lead to a new array of institutions delivering degrees and degree equivalents. Some will be aimed at students seeking solid credentials at low cost with no frills; others will provide a more face-to-face experience than is typically the case today with online education. In other words, the models will collapse on one another to some extent from both directions. (...)"

Five Data Visualization Tools Focused on Design | Visually Blog | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
The last few years have brought data visualization deeply into the world of design. It used to take highly technical designers or a team of developers and designers to create data visualizations that were both accurate and beautiful. Recently, several web-based data visualization tools have come out (thanks to D3.js) that lower that barrier to entry so that designers don’t need as many technical skills to be able to build their own beautiful data visualizations. Here are five of those tools, what they do, and how you should use them: Datavisual Out of all of these tools, Datavisual is tailored most directly at solving the problems of information designers. It just left private beta and is open to the public now. Datavisual’s main features keep designers from having to perform repetitive formatting tasks, and gives them output formats that are easy to edit in other applications. If you teach history/social studies this post is right up your alley. The website MadeFromHistory has put together 30 infographics that look at 30 key events in the last 100 years, and they do acknowledge that the have "left out quite a few events" due to space limitations. You can also find sections that focus on World War I, World War II, and Civil Rights as well as a Referenced Blog, which shares a wide variety of topics.

For many students, using visuals helps them to recall information more readily. If you teach history from the past 100 years it is worth checking out this website.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, August 12, 7:32 PM

As many schools move to Common Core the question of rigor is a key issue. States that have tested with Common Core have seen significant drops in scores. Why? The Common Core tests are more difficult than most local tests.

Grant Wiggins states "to significantly raise local standards of performance seems to mean we have to lower student grades." Most schools do not want to do this (and certainly most parents do not want to see lower grades).

He continues to explore this issue looking at rigor, and noting that rigor is currently defined by 3 elements:

  1. The difficulty of the task or questions
  2. The difficulty of the criteria, as established by rubrics
  3. The level of achievement expected, as set by “anchors” or cut scores.

However, he notes that many schools/districts do not get past #1. Why? "The problem of fair/normed grading!"

Wiggins then goes on to the final section of this post, called "Solution: avoid thoughtless calculations based on false equivalencies."

However, there is one more section that provides two helpful pieces of information that may help you create better assessments. It includes Webb's Depth of Knowledge Wheel as well as audit matrix that looks at the Assessment Format (Task Complexity and Context) and Cognitive Demand (Depth and Fluency of Thinking). (See image above).

Additionally, he has included an appendix that has text from Webb for levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 for Math, Reading and Writing.

These are great resources to share with teachers in your district as we move to Common Core.

Soon after Maryanne Wolf published “Proust and the Squid,” a history of the science and the development of the reading brain from antiquity to the twenty-first century, she began to receive letters from readers. Reading on line...a good habit? Here to stay?

Helen Teague's curator insight, August 3, 6:36 AM
Do students retain more information when they read from books rather than from digital devices? Does reading online present challenges due to distractions? Do students need to be taught skills to become better online readers?
Ruby Day's curator insight, August 3, 2:21 PM

Studies show we are not reading as effectively online as we are with hard copies. This highlights the need for tools to help us read deeper online - e.g annotation type tools. This links to an interesting stuy of year 5 students using collaborative annotation software demonstrating higher performance than the control group's' paper based annotation.

LLZ Uni Halle's insight:

"(...) There are two important conclusions from the research: 1. Even for the sole purpose for which lectures may be effective – the transmission of information – the 50 minute lecture needs to be well organized, with frequent opportunities for student questions and discussion. (Bligh provides excellent suggestions on how to do this in his book.) 2. For all other important learning activities, such as developing critical thinking, deep understanding, and application of knowledge – the kind of skills needed in a digital age – lectures are ineffective. Other forms of teaching and learning – such as opportunities for discussion and student activities – are necessary. (...)"
