VideoANT: A free video annotation tool

VideoANT: A free video annotation tool | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
I have used VideoANT for a number of things. Here are some ideas to get your started:

Bookmarking sections of the video: I mark the start of the section I would like my students to watch and add the questions in the ‘Content’ section of the annotation. Students then click on the time marker and watch that part of the video. They can then add their responses/answers by clicking on the ‘Respond’ button.
Video slideshows: Students make a screencast of their slide presentation and then share it with other students who can then comment on things. I encourage students to add ‘audience participation’ questions to their presentation so students can add comments using the annotation tool.
Mini lessons: I make a short video lesson and then post it for students to watch and add questions and even writing practice in the annotation.
Group projects: Students in groups watch the video separately, adding their comments so they can then come together in class to discuss their findings.
Transcripts: Some videos on YouTube have transcripts, but many don’t. You can add your own transcripts this way by adding your annotation before the text in the video.

This is an interesting read from the publisher's perspective - one which we don't often consider.  For me the answer has been, for a couple of decades now, writing my own teaching resources.  In more recent times these find their way into class as blended courses on the LMS.  This is better than a digital copy of a textbook from a publisher because I have tracking data too.  Probably this is where publishers should head next.

"Professors, administrators, and ed-tech vendors don’t always speak the same language when it comes to talking about experimental approaches to teaching and research. Terms like “flipped classroom” and “digital humanities” get thrown around a lot these days, but different people often mean different things by them. And some people still don’t know what they mean, despite their buzzword status."

"Perhaps no other word has been as popular in higher education during the past few years as the term “flipped.” As a result, there is no shortage of ideas and opinions about flipped learning environments. Some faculty consider it another way to talk about student-centered learning. Others view flipped classrooms as an entirely new approach to teaching and learning. Still others see flipping as just another instructional fad that will eventually run its course."

Why Innovation Beats Politics in Reforming Higher Education

Why Innovation Beats Politics in Reforming Higher Education | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
The product being bought is the credential. The credential drives the entire industry and is what causes millions to go deep into debt for an experience they often don’t love and admit doesn’t make them any more valuable in terms of tangible skills.

College credentials are valuable due to their signalling value. Your degree sends a signal to the world that you are, ostensibly, better than a similar person without the credential. This signal has some meaning; making it through college means you’re probably better than someone who lacked the intelligence or drive to do so--but it’s a shockingly low bar.

The proliferation of degreed people and the decline in ability among incoming freshman has turned college into little more than what high school once was.
