This is all great news but as a parent and having watched as my kids go through K12 it is abundantly evident and clear that none of this technology is worth a thing unless the educators that are using it as a tool understand it and can wield it to their benefit. Sadly they are having a tough time getting to grips with simple devices like iPads and Chrome pads with NO special software other than the reporting software. To which I am finding they are having trouble just posting things such as grades and test scores.

Interesantes resultados y recomendaciones que surgen de un estudio realizado a partir del análisis de la data recogida de la observación de 6.9 millones de sesiones de videos por parte de estudiantes de cuatro cursos edX y de entrevistas con equipos de producción de dichos videos. Se midió el nivel de interés (engagement) que estos videos provocaron en los estudiantes de manera indirecta a través del tiempo en que estos permanecían observando el video. Aún cuando esta no es ni siquiera una buena medida para comprender el impacto de estos contenidos multimedia en el aprendizaje de los alumnos, el estudio brinda algunas interesantes luces sobre como deben producirse estos videos para fines educativos y conseguir al menos que los estudiantes no se aburran rápidamente con ellos.

In short, we want educational predictions to be wrong. If our predictive model can tell that a student is going to fail, we want that to be true only in the absence of intervention. If the student does in fact fail, that should be seen as a failure of the system. A predictive model should be part of a prediction-and-response system that (1) makes predictions that would be accurate in the absence of a response and (2) enables a response that renders the prediction incorrect (e.g., to accurately predict that, given a specific intervention, the student will succeed). In a good prediction-and-response system, all predictions would ultimately be negatively biased. The best way to empirically demonstrate this is to exploit random variation in the assignment of the system—for example, random assignment of the prediction-and-response system to some students but not all. This approach is rarely used in residential higher education but is newly enabled by digital data.The grand challenge in data-intensive research and analysis in higher education is to find the means to extract knowledge from the extremely rich data sets being generated today and to distill this into usable information for students, instructors, and the public.
