How to Keep the Humanity in Online Courses

How to Keep the Humanity in Online Courses | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
If you have ever taken or considered taking an online course, you are well aware of some of the challenges and criticisms that online courses face. Some consider the fact that there is no physical, literal classroom a disadvantage. Others consider it an advantage. When taking an online course, it is true that there are no students in the desks next to you, and that there may be hundreds or even more than a thousand students participating in the same class. The lack of a physical classroom, however, does not have to be a disadvantage. One advantage of online courses …

6 Signs of a Bad Online Instructor

6 Signs of a Bad Online Instructor | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
About 5.4 million students, or 1 in 4, took at least one distance education course during the fall of 2012, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

That said, even the best online programs – like their traditional campus counterparts – have some poor professors. And it can be trickier to identify those instructors in an online course until it’s too late to switch.

The many students beginning a new online course should be aware of these six signs their professor won’t make the grade.

To a lesser degree, I’m also beginning to hear anecdotes of colleges and universities working with area high schools to create badges around college readiness and earning AP-style credit. We might think of this as “high school degree plus.” In other words, badges are organically filling in small but critical gaps in our current credentialing system that make it more difficult for students to move onto the next, post-credential stage in their lives.

Why Professors Shouldn’t Ban Smartphones

Why Professors Shouldn’t Ban Smartphones | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
As smartphones have become more common, educators have struggled with the question of what to do with smartphones in the classroom. For K-12 educators, the answer has been to ban smartphones from the classroom completely. College professors have also banned smartphones in increasing numbers. But now there’s some evidence to suggest that banning smartphones in the college classroom isn’t such a good idea.

A study conducted by researchers in Singapore found that undergraduate students who were allowed to keep their phones with them actually scored better on tasks that measured their cognitive functioning. Even when they weren’t allowed to use their phones, students who were allowed to keep their phones in their pockets performed better than students whose phones were confiscated.

In this case, researchers theorized that the poor performance by students without phones was due to a kind of smartphone withdrawal. When students had their phones taken away, they may have been anxious about missing out on something—a text message or friend request, for example. This anxiety could take students’ minds off of what they should be learning.

"Whatever acronym of a curriculum model we choose for our school, I believe the important thing is that it basically fits the following description: an engaging, real and relevant student driven curriculum developing understandings of broader concepts that students can apply in countless situations, fostering 21st century skills such as collaboration, problem solving, innovation, information literacy and the communication of ideas through multi-media mediums.

It calls on students to be curious, demands of them to question and be critical, and challenges them to engage with the real world to find answers and be an agent for change."
