Oskar Almazan's curator insight, February 8, 8:42 AM
Niche-specific content is usually not readily available through regular generic search engines. One example is the academic and scholarly content. While running a search query about an academic topic through a generic search engine such as Google would probably render fairly decent results, it, however, usually takes digging into so much fluff before finally landing on relevant results. This is where having access to topic-specific search engines comes in handy. Such search engines do not only provide specific content tailored to the topic under study but their content is more likely to be reliable and authoritative. To this end, we have compiled this list of excellent academic search engines that teachers, student researchers and academics can use to quickly locate and access scholarly works and publications. We have only included what we believe are the most relevant and popular titles out there.

Flipped classroom model is similar to what we do with the NSM prep via LMS. Some feedback has been that we need to tape role play best practices and show the perfect role play so that reps can model that at the live training.

6 Signs of a Bad Online Instructor

6 Signs of a Bad Online Instructor | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
About 5.4 million students, or 1 in 4, took at least one distance education course during the fall of 2012, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

That said, even the best online programs – like their traditional campus counterparts – have some poor professors. And it can be trickier to identify those instructors in an online course until it’s too late to switch.

The many students beginning a new online course should be aware of these six signs their professor won’t make the grade.

I selected this article from Curatti written by Ruchika Sharma
because it provides insights on how to improve your content curation plan.

Focus on engaging your audience with a solution and strong call to action.

How to Use Effectively Publish Content

Content should be tailored for your target audience's needs and desires. I agree that you can be successful by appealing to their pressing questions and offering them a compelling solution that they will want to buy into.

Sharma explains the basics of content planning that stands out to your community.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Look for previously published content to find at least 5 top keywords for your article. Recommended tools are ahrefs and Buzzsumo.

  • Define your topics early on and then brainstorm. Answer the where, what, why and how for your readers.

  • It's important to optimize not only your content, but your images as well. This will then help you to optimize your keyword choices.

Using technology in class should always be motivated by a real need to optimize students' learning and to enhance your teaching. Every time you want to digitize a teaching task ask yourself the following questions: what are the added advantages of integrating technology in this task? And what are the alternative plans if things did not go as planned? The purpose is to make sure your use of technology is pedagogically sound and that it aligns with your own teaching goals.

Will You Graduate? Ask Big Data

Will You Graduate? Ask Big Data | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
“Most of the predictive-analytics people are looking at grades,” Dr. Ram said. “A lot of times it’s not the grades but whether they feel comfortable and socially integrated. If they are not socially integrated, they drop out.”

Dr. Ram has tracked nearly 30,000 students over the last three years. Matching her findings against actual dropouts, she said, she has an accuracy rate of about 85 percent, but her project is still in the testing phase. She says identities are kept private.

That’s a major concern about big data: that student details could become public. It is not the only issue. Martin Kurzweil, a program director at Ithaka S + R, an education research organization, worries that students whose performance is setting off alarms could be discouraged from following their passion. “Algorithm is not destiny,” he said. “It’s important that human judgment is never removed from the process and that there is always an opportunity for a student to appeal a pathway that’s being plotted for them.”
