Now that “social learning” is becoming a hot topic, organizations are beginning to consider how they can implement or operationalize it.

We have already seen that social media is a very different beast from normal enterprise tools, particularly because it is being used at the grass roots rather than being implemented top-down by the organization. Social tools are not only changing the way that we think about “learning” but also how we apply them. This then begs the question, what is the best way to implement social learning within an organization?"

This visual encyclopedia comes from the publisher DK. It is new, and therefore somewhat limited but based on the website they have plans to grow it.

This would be great to use with younger students, ELL students and special education students. The site is easy to use and along with the categories shown in the image above you will also find sections called:

* What's New?

* Videos

* Quizzes

* Fun Facts

* Galleries

and coming soon a section called My Space.

As an educator you may create an account and access a lesson planner.

The DK Online World Desk Reference may also be on interest. You need to create an account to use it which takes seconds to do. This site "explores topics in physical and human geography for every country in the world, and practices critical-thinking skills."

Recently I went to a school on the outskirts of the Western Chicago suburbs to lead a Teacher Training in-service. What I saw in one classroom almost stopped me dead in my tracks. It was a sign about proper BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) use in the classroom.  I was amazed.

BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device, refers to the policy of allowing students to bring their personal mobile devices, such as smartphones, laptops and PDAs into the classroom for use and connectivity while learning. A new approach to integrating students’ technology into the classroom, BYOD is slowly gaining ground in the K-12 arena.

Given the huge integration of technology into the lives of our students, why haven’t more schools begun implementing BYOD in the classroom? After all, aren't more children today prone to using/having personal devices at home? To begin with, here are a few very valid and real barriers or concerns:

Personal device inequities in the classroom (This is a biggie for me - how have others dealt with this? )Lagging Wi-Fi, or school bandwidth issues which make it difficult to support multiple devices on campusNeed for more IT specialists and support  to help with increased tech demandsA mind shift in general teaching practices, movement away from cell phone use as a distraction, to learning augmentationNeed for broad behavior interventions and school regulations on proper use of technology


Despite the lengthy list of barriers to implementing BYOD, many schools have found that with successful support, tech integration, and training, BYOD can be an amazing tool for students. Some of the positives schools have seen when enacting BYOD on campuses include:

More engaged students and learning environmentsA classroom that more closely mirrors outside technological realities and allows for good conversations/modeling of proper useBetter collaboration across classes, students, parents and other teachersDifferentiated learning that can extend beyond classroomLess cost associated with tech purchases like those for 1:1 models

I love the idea of having a mix of resources so teachers can tailor, em, personalize (?) the technology to the learning objectives and needs of the students. Next week I'll be working with a school district that is exposing--and TRAINING--teachers on a range of technology options (LearnPad, iPads, Chromebooks, etc.) and letting them choose what to use when. Smart. Really smart.

QR codes seem to be one of those technologies that sort of hang in the background but don't seem to take off for general or widespread use. I do see some interesting benefits for QR codes and this article give some great ideas for using them.  We could use more sharing from educators who are using this tool.  Maybe more people would incorporate this into their teaching strategies?
