Why the School-As-Factory Metaphor Still Pervades

Why the School-As-Factory Metaphor Still Pervades | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
Why has the factory system remained such a strong metaphor for education for so long?

Beth Dichter's curator insight, May 14, 7:17 PM

How many times have you heard or read about the school-as-a-factory, how public schools were created to help move children from farm-to-factory? Today this metaphor may be out of place, but conversations around education still revolve around terms that relate to factories. Think of Common Core and how business has been a prime player in the creation of the standards.

This post explores this issue and provides a number of great visuals that help bring the discussion into focus.

Education 3.0: Altering Round Peg in Round Hole Education

Education 3.0: Altering Round Peg in Round Hole Education | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

"What follows is my Ignite talk for ISTE 2013.  It was rejected by the selection committee.  As I already conceptualized the talk and think it is such an important topic, I am disseminating my text and slides via my blog and Slideshare.  First, Education 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 are described.  Later, I discuss the consequences of Education 1.0 vs Education 3.0 on learners (and educators!) especially those that do not fit the mold of Education 1.0."

Thanks go to Jackie Gerstein for sharing this presentation so we may learn more about the shift from Education 1.0 to Education 2.0 to Education 3.0. The slides are available on her blog as well as a link to Slideshare. Additional links to information are available as you read through the text in the post.

What Are the 7 Mind Frames of Learning?

What Are the 7 Mind Frames of Learning? | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

'Learning thrives on error'

"Among all the influences that can make a profound difference in student learning is how we think about our role!  So, start with looking inward and ask about the mind frames you have as an educator.

It is through these mind frames that we make decisions in the classroom and school, and it is argued that educators highly imbued with these mind frames are among the high impact educators."

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, January 15, 3:18 PM

Teachers need to recast themselves as learners alongside students. The days of the expert are behind us despite the advent of TED talks and other media where we still seem to think the sage on the stage is the way to impart knowledge, wisdom, and truth. There are moments for that, but learning is very relational, contingent, contextual, and personal.

I like the approach of "walking in their shoes" to describe how educators effect an interest in learning.
