Many technological advances and conveniences that have made our lives easier and less active, many personal variables, including physiological, behavioral, and psychological factors, may affect our plans to become more physically active. In fact, the 10 most common reasons adults cite for not adopting more physically active lifestyles are (Sallis and Hovell, 1990; Sallis et al., 1992)

Further, many of the sports wind-up marginalized in some manner by the mainstream (e.g. can you find weightlifting shoes in most shoe stores? sick of only hearing about football, baseball, basketball and hockey on the news sportscast?

Britian's Silver Medalist in London 2012 :

"My parents enrolled me into a programme at our local leisure centre in   Glasgow. As soon as I got in the water I just loved it. I joined my swimming   club when I was seven which got me into a new social circle. I started   competing at the small league matches with swimmers the same age   representing different clubs around the west of Scotland. Aged eight, I was   doing maybe six to eight hours a week in the water"
