Surprises Are the New Normal; Resilience Is the New Skill

Surprises Are the New Normal; Resilience Is the New Skill | Your Personality is Your Thumbprint | Scoop.it

The difference between winners and losers how they handle losing. No one can completely avoid troubles and potential pitfalls are everywhere, so the real skill is the resilience to climb out of the hole and bounce back.

For anyone who wants to get beyond adversity or start over rather than give up, America is the Land of Second Chances. According to Jon Huntsman, former US Ambassador to China, getting back on our feet is an American strength widely admired in China. And everywhere, rapid recovery from natural disasters is increasingly a key to a robust economy. Entrepreneurs and innovators must be willing to fail and try again. The point isn't to learn to fail, it is to learn to bounce back.

Psychopaths' Brains Aren't Wired To Show Empathy, Study Finds

Psychopaths' Brains Aren't Wired To Show Empathy, Study Finds | Your Personality is Your Thumbprint | Scoop.it

Psychopaths are unable to show empathy toward others because their brains aren't wired to do so, according to a new study in JAMA Psychiatry.

Researchers from the University of Chicago used brain imaging technology to find that psychopaths have less activation in certain parts of the brain and high activation in other parts of the brain, compared with people who are not psychopaths, in response to scenarios of people being purposely hurt.

In the new study, researchers conducted functional MRI brain imaging on 80 prisoners ages 18 to 50, all of whom had tests done to measure their levels of psychopathy. Then, they posed some scenarios of someone being hurt purposely, as well as had them watch videos of pained facial expressions.

Researchers found that those who scored higher on the psychopathy test experienced less activation in the amygdala, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, lateral orbitofrontal cortex, and periaqueductal gray brain regions, compared with those who scored lower on the test. Those who scored higher on the psychopathy test had more activation of the striatum and insula brain regions -- the insula brain region is known to play a role in emotion, researchers noted.

27 easy ways to sleep better tonight

27 easy ways to sleep better tonight | Your Personality is Your Thumbprint | Scoop.it
Put the alarm clock away, dim the lights and save the bedroom for certain activities only – here’s some ways to snooze easier this evening.

THE AVERAGE PERSON spends more than one third of his/her life asleep. But don’t be fooled — just because the body is sleeping doesn’t mean it’s slacking off.

During sleep, the body repairs itself so that when the alarm clock goes off, our bodies are renewed and refreshed. Tossing and turning all night can affect judgment, productivity, and the ability to retain information the next day. Over time, it can contribute to obesity, diabetes, and — of course — a chronic bad attitude. (Did someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?) So check out our list on how to sleep better tonight — and thank us in the morning.

Of course.

HJJP's curator insight, March 23, 2016 10:00 AM

This ad campaign revolves around “the two opposing parts of the brain that complement each other”: the left side, responsible for logic and analysis and the creative and intuitive right side. The message is that Mercedes Benz, like the brain, is a combination of opposites that together create technological innovation, breakthrough engineering, inspiring design and passion. It was created by Shalmor Avnon Amichay/Y&R Interactive, Tel Aviv  for Mercedes Benz Israel.

The story says:

Left brain

I am the left brain.
I am a scientist. A mathematician.
I love the familiar. I categorize. I am accurate. Linear.
Analytical. Strategic. I am practical.
Always in control. A master of words and language.
Realistic. I calculate equations and play with numbers.
I am order. I am logic.
I know exactly who I am.

Right brain

I am the right brain.
I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion.
Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter.
I am taste. The feeling of sand beneath bare feet.
I am movement. Vivid colors.
I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas.
I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel.
I am everything I wanted to be.

Mercedes-Benz
The best or nothing.

Whole Brain Thinking is what we should learn.

This is one area that I can help with. I offer a variety of therapies which will help to reduce your stress levels and give you the much needed time out even 10 minutes and I offer these therapies not only in a variety of clinics but due to the lack of time people have I can come to the office environment. During the therapy you remain fully clothed and I work with you to cause the least disruption to the work being carried out. As little as 10 minutes can make a huge difference to a persons life. We think we have not got the time but can you really afford for the negative effects of stress to build up?
WorkplaceIncentives's curator insight, May 12, 2013 11:19 PM

Stress is often seen as the result of an event. The event causes stress. However this isn't true. We as individuals have the ability to control whether or not we 'get stressed'. It is in fact our perception of any event or 'thing' that may cause us to be stressed. Should we perceive an event in a positive light or choose to frame the event constructively, we can prevent ourselves from becoming stressed. As you're reading this insight you might be thinking that it may seem like we're stating the obvious and yet so many people, probably including yourself, get stressed on a regular basis...

Jesse Wieser's curator insight, May 20, 2013 7:43 PM

My thoughts

After reading this article, I find the mini-relaxation plans suggested are a huge help when your running on little to no time and just need a quick breather. The relaxation plan in this article goes into detail about what can you do to relieve some stress in 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, etc. which can be very helpful even trying these plans in between classes on account of the fact school can be very stressful at times. What I enjoyed the most about this article is the 2 minute relaxation plan, where I'll be taking 1 deep breath for every number I count down too since deep-breathing helps relieves stress and some of the bad toxins in your body.

I prefer the word 'mindful' rather than 'thoughtful'. It is a big difference. I see thoughtful as being part of mindful. The author makes a good point about networks and communities being different. This means we can behave and act differently. Networks may or may not be able to hold people to account whereas a community might be able to.
