Anti-Green 30% Subsidy cut hits new hydro plans

Anti-Green 30% Subsidy cut hits new hydro plans | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it
The main operator of Scottish hydro power stations says it no longer expects to build new ones following a subsidy cut.

It also warned changes to Whitehall's support regime for renewable power could significantly harm biomass burning and wind farm development.

RWE/nPower, which was also planning new hydro, is understood to be considering freezing its plans after subsidy cuts.

The news comes after the government announced a 30% reduction in the Renewable Obligation Certificates companies receive per unit of energy produced.

Independence? What has ‘The Union’ ever done for us? SwanseaLabourLeft | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

This paper was prepared as an introduction on the ‘national question’ for Swansea Labour Left, affiliate of Welsh Labour Grassroots.

Austerity, we should be clear, is, of course, necessary to protect British ‘big nation’ nationalism and its capitalism.

Dear Prime Minister – growth and green energy go hand-in-hand - WWF UK Blog

Dear Prime Minister – growth and green energy go hand-in-hand - WWF UK Blog | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it
We urge you to make clear that your Government understands that a strong, resilient green economy is essential for growth, job creation and innovation. We would welcome seeing your Chancellor becoming an active champion for one of the few sectors to have shown resilience through the recession.

Continued attacks on the green economy not only undermine your own ambition to lead the “greenest government ever” : they are increasingly seen as serving narrow political ends at the expense of the national interest.

Yours sincerely

David Nussbaum

Labour For Independence: Blair Jenkins Interview

Labour For Independence: Blair Jenkins Interview | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

"Lots of Labour voters in Scotland support the idea of an independent Scotland, as do many members and supporters of all the other parties. This is an issue that transcends party politics. We know that a great many Labour voters are attracted by the prospect of helping to build a fairer society that is more likely to chime with their values and beliefs. Another point in favour of independence that often comes up in discussion with Labour supporters is the prospect of having the best of the talent in the Labour Party serving in the Scottish Parliament rather than at Westminster."

Scottish Review: Thanks, your majesty, but it's time we Scots moved on

Scottish Review: Thanks, your majesty, but it's time we Scots moved on | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

It is the stated position of the first minister, if not his whole party, that an independent Scotland would retain the queen as head of state and queen of Scots. I suggest that for Mr Salmond to have already made such an important decision about an independent Scotland is rather unfortunate. To many Scots, the notion of a newly independent Scotland emerging into the 21st century with an essentially medieval institution at its constitutional helm is absurd. Quite apart from that, it seems presumptuous to make this kind of decision without consulting the Scottish people first.
Scottish independence must not be thought of as a finishing line. It should be considered a gateway to improvement. It is a valuable goal because it will enable us to create a better Scotland. It will enable us to change what needs changed. The abolition of an ancient entrenched privilege would send an important signal about the new, more equal Scotland that we should be working towards.

The simple symbols of unionism are disintegrating | Scottish Review

The simple symbols of unionism are disintegrating | Scottish Review | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

"The challenge for the 'Scotland Says Yes' campaign is to transcend the symbolic elements of Scottish-ness and to outline the peculiarities, the national characteristics as well as the pride and confidence which might be encouraged, just as our galas and marches encourage these at a local level, by independence, and to assert the moral purpose of independence rather than dependence.
To date that voice has not been heard."

Frankly: How to Save the Euro - devalue it - Paul Jorion

Frankly: How to Save the Euro - devalue it - Paul Jorion | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

"..a monetary zone has to be able to default in its entirety and restructure its debt (i.e. to be able to say, "I can only pay back X cents for every euro I have borrowed"), and it also has to be able to revalue its currency and, particularly, to be able to devalue it.

The Eurozone has deprived itself of these two medicines. So it is hardly surprising that it is so unwell today that it is at death's door.

The solution: next Sunday evening (before Tokyo opens) the entire debt of all 17 states in the Eurozone will be renamed Eurodebt (French OAT bonds, German Bunds, etc.), and one minute later the Eurozone as a whole will default.

On Monday morning the Eurodebt will be restructured (in one fell swoop), and the exchange rate between the euro and other currencies will be allowed to adjust naturally"

Once the post Olympic bunting has come down what will we be left with? A bunch of empty sports venues, a £multi-billion debt and an increasingly disunited kingdom.

After less than 15 years the devolved parliaments have already gained significant powers, so does anyone really expect the current settlement to be the end of the road for British federalism?

“Recently in Scotland there was a gay Catholic MP who died at the age of 44 or so, and nobody said anything, and why his body should just shut down at that age? Obviously he could have had a disease that would have killed anybody. But you seem to hear so many stories about this kind of thing, but society won’t address it.” Archbishop-elect of Glasgow.
"Essentially, the Archbishop-elect stands by his remarks and his view. That David Cairns died at the age of 44 because he was gay.

Scottish Review: The Reith lecturer has us shouting at the radio

Scottish Review: The Reith lecturer has us shouting at the radio | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

Professor Ferguson ended his lecture by asking us to consider what Adam Smith and David Hume would make of the state of Scotland today. It may well be true that much about our contemporary world would disappoint them. The question is where would they place the blame? On the state and its governance? Or on the workings of contemporary Anglo-American capitalism which Professor Kidd in his question identified as the true enemy of civil society?

"Exchequer Secretary David Gauke has some nerve doing the rounds on tax morality this week. Yesterday Guido brought you news of Gauke’s past avoidance of stamp duty and his wife’s job at a firm advising tax lawyers, while today the Telegraph and Mail both splash on his claim that paying tradesmen cash in hand is “morally wrong“:

“Getting a discount with your plumber by paying cash in hand is something that is a big cost to the Revenue and means others have to pay more in tax. I think it is morally wrong.”
