Scottish Review: Scandal in Edinburgh - Kenneth Roy

Scottish Review: Scandal in Edinburgh - Kenneth Roy | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

"We are approaching the 49th anniversary of the most momentous day in the history of the Edinburgh Festival, the pivotal event in the birth of the decade which came to be known as the swinging sixties.
Great days, huh? I'm not sure that beach volleyball really cuts it as the modern equivalent."

Standard Chartered Bank 'in $250bn scheme with Iran'

Standard Chartered Bank 'in $250bn scheme with Iran' | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it
Standard Chartered illegally "schemed" with Iran for almost a decade to launder as much as $250bn (£161bn) in secret transactions, a US regulator says.

"It is now looking as though Standard and Chartered have joined the ranks of other mainstream banks in the conduct of $250 Billion yes Billion sham sanction busting transactions for Iran over a 10 year period http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19155577 The criminality of these institutions is such that the only reasonable options are to nationalise them and/or shut them down. Personally I am not particularly interested in filling the penal system with the miscreants; much better to pillage their family trusts, pensions and savings and leave them with the clothes they stand up in and say a sum up to half a million. Watching them come to terms with relative poverty would make for an interesting not to say amusing spectacle. Whatever happens the trust in ALL financial institutions has GONE. Our governments have to get real about this - banking is the largest organised crime organisation the world has ever seen. It won't be fixed with 'elastoplast'. Every day they continue to trade merely endorses their actions. The idea that the problem is limited to UK and US is daft it is ubiquitous and is endemic in Australasia, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas." The public health services is already cracking at the borders. Dancing nurses and a giant baby won’t change that reality over the next few years. An argument that a Scottish NHS is the only way to ensure a public NHS will be more persuasive than Friday night’s TV.

As for the next few weeks, there is nothing wrong with supporting British athletes, there is nothing wrong with supporting only Scottish athletes and there is nothing wrong with supporting everyone and just enjoying the show. Maybe politics should take a backseat during the greatest show on earth

Let the Summerhall revolution begin! - Kevin Williamson | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

"Summerhall is already a major player within Scotland’s arts and cultural scene. When the centre is complete it will be the largest bespoke arts complex in Europe. The scale and anarchic energy behind Summerhall will eventually dwarf everything London has to offer. I’d say the British arts scene is about to feel the tectonic plates shift beneath its feet and maybe even see the centre of gravity shift north." Kevin Williamson

‘Out of touch, incompetent and boring’ - voters’ verdict on Scottish Labour - News - Scotsman.com | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it
SCOTTISH Labour is seen as “out of touch”, “incompetent” and “boring”, a YouGov poll has shown, exposing the mountain party leader Johann Lamont has to climb if she is to seize back power from the SNP at Holyrood.

A recent poll found that, on the constituency vote at Holyrood, the SNP is at 47 per cent, Labour is at 32 per cent, the Conservatives at 12 per cent and the Liberal Democrats at 6 per cent.

The now unfolding debate on independence in the run up to the referendum in late 2014 provides for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put the case for a socially just Scotland.

"Scotland contributes more than its share to the Revenue of the UK " 48 year old English mother | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it

Sue Lyons is a 48 year old English mother, wife, carer and generally opinionated person. She lives happily in the Highlands of Scotland married to John – a self confessed rabid scottish nationalist with a massive ginger beard.

"It seems to be that Scotland contributes more than its share to the Revenue of the UK. The arguments that Scotland isn’t financially viable as an independent nation – that it is too poor, too wee and too stupid to survive – are starting to disappear from the newspapers and the mouths of politicians. Even David Cameron acknowledges that Scotland could go it alone, although you might have to dig a bit to find it."

SCOTLAND now accounts for a third of the GB golds and more than a quarter of the medals overall – outstripping our proportion of the population.

Labour voters can see the Scottish parliament under the SNP has stuck with the values Labour used to believe in a long time ago – helping out ordinary families. The Scottish parliament’s limited powers have been used by the SNP to freeze the council tax, introduce free prescriptions, end tuition fees in university and keep care and travel for the elderly free.

Trump’s Golf Game Burns Scots: Movies - Bloomberg | YES for an Independent Scotland | Scoop.it
In 2005 Donald Trump bought 1,400 acres of farmland and environmentally sensitive dunes north of Aberdeen, Scotland. He intended to build two golf courses, a hotel, luxury housing and vacation apartments.

"We have a Chancellor of the Exchequer who, in 2006 travelled to Dublin and claimed that “Ireland stands as a shining example of the art of the possible in long-term economic policy making, and that is why I am in Dublin: to listen and to learn.” Two years later the Irish economy collapsed under the weight of a property bubble recently described by the Financial Times as “a sort of Northern Rock on steroids.”"
