All in all, I didn’t see too much to get excited about. In a sense, it was an example in how to undertake a reshuffle responsibly. In spite of all the media hype, very little of substance has changed. It might have lacked the drama of “Nightmare on Downing Street”, but Scotland is all the better for it.

You tend to expect legal professionals to be a bit more careful with their words than this. Over the last few days we’ve been documenting the bizarre mental collapse of staunch Scottish Labour activist Ian Smart, a practising solicitor from Cumbernauld who’s managed to arrive at the conclusion that there won’t be an independence referendum at all, but if there is and there’s a Yes vote then Scotland will almost instantly degenerate into a poverty-stricken fascist dictatorship with no elections, 100% unemployment, compulsory Gaelic in schools and cannibalism in the streets.

"Urging Cameron to release Treasury money for further capital spending, to combat the recession, Salmond said: "The record of this parliament is the clearest possible evidence that the best people to make decisions about the future of Scotland are the people who choose to live and work in our country.

"We will give them the choice of independence: responsibility for ourselves as a nation, a voice in the world, and government that reflects the people's priorities and Scottish values."

"We’re making no predictions about the outcome of the referendum. It’s going to be a hard fight, and two years is an eternity in politics. But make no mistake: even if only as a contingency plan, the Unionists are preparing to lose."

IT’S rare for government ministers to welcome requests under the Freedom of Information Act. They despair at endless demands for dinner receipts and internal memos, knowing that most answers represent a handover of bullets to the opposition or press.

Sir Peter Housden’s internal memo reveals the battleground on which the referendum will eventually be fought. And it’s planted with booby traps for the unionist campaign

"An independent Catalonia would be economically and socially viable, although this is difficult to achieve. Currently the apparatus of the state is mobilized against Catalonia, steadily choking it to death." (Jordi Pujol in an interview published in Presència on August 31st 2012)

Could one imagine Mr Dewar saying anything comparable about Scotland today if he had survived? Hardly, although it is true that his unfortunate Labour successor in the office of First Minister, Henry McLeish, recently expressed the view that independence might be "the shock that Scotland needs".
