Around the world, there are many organizations in both the public and private sectors, who recognise that their portfolio, programme and project management is best supported through a delivery support office.
The P3O publication has recently been refreshed to reflect current best practices and improve alignment with other products in the Best Management Practice portfolio including MoP® (Management of Portfolios), MoV® (Management of Value) and MSP® (Managing Successful Programmes). A number of other revisions have also been made to improve the guidance.
Brian Phillips's insight:
I am pleased to have been included as a Reviewer for the P3O 2013 refresh - a good text and essential if you are setting up or re-energising a PMO. Brian Phillips :-)
If you work in a PMO or need to re-energise yours, this is a great course over 4 days to get an understanding of best practice and to align with peers who are on the same journey.
Typical of most of the PM world we live in, we are seeing the evolution of different models bearing the same name or acronym - PMO.
So we start talking about PjMO for Projects, PgMO for Programmes and PfMO for Portfolio - but this still doesn't provide enough differentiation. Some people differentiate by P1O, P2O, P3O, and that may work internally.
If you get a copy of the P3O guide (from TSO published by OGC) the various PMO models show the key differences between permanent and temporary offices; Pf, Pg and Pj Offices, and the key functions - Decision-enabling; Delivery support; Centre of Excellence. So COE has become a name for the PSO and includes expertise with tools, templates, methods, assurance, training, etc.
As we see maturity developing, it is important to understand the type of "PMO" we are working on. Our P3O course does this, and you get certification as a P3O Practitioner. http://www.yellowhouse.net/p3o-form.html
Last one in the series - MSP is great for the model, but the 'how' of transition management is up to you. This is why we run a Change Management course as well - to help the business to embed the change.
