We need manpower to help with the Construction committee of Greener Blocks | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it

We need manpower to help with the Construction committee of Greener Blocks. Know anyone who can help? If so, please contact Brandon Wiegand and or Ciara Byrne or use the contact links at the websites and social media links below.

We are less than 10 days out from the beginning of Build a Greener Block. We need 70 volunteers to build the site - so far we have 7! We need to know ASAP when you can volunteer otherwise to be honest we will not be able to move forward.

here is part of a message recently received from Kat Welniak our Head of Construction:

"However, in order to pull this off, we have to BUILD it first. That means that I need people to commit to Wednesday – Friday as well.

We have an awesome event that will start to transform the way in which people think and live in this community, and we can’t do it without a lot of commitment from everyone. We need as many volunteers as we can find to help! We don’t have any restrictions – you can be the craziest, zaniest, youngest, oldest, ironic, iconic, sanest, boring-ist, funnest person or people in the world. We will find a way for you to help. You can have any skill set or not – we are going to help you do it. So, you don’t have to be a master carpenter, brain surgeon, or rocket scientist to qualify your help - You just have to have a passion for this cause!

So, please sit down for 10 minutes, look at your schedules and that of your best of others (wife, hubby, kids, mom-in-law, dad-in-law, the milkman, whomever), and reply back with an email of when you can help?"

Community Comes Together to Build a Greener Block - Environmental Media Association | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it

"A couple of friends recently decided to create a group where ordinary people could come together and talk about how they could make Las Vegas more sustainable....

And why are they doing this? They want to show that when people come together as a community, neighborhoods can be changed for the better. And further out, towns and cities can be changed as well. They want to show that when skills, talents, experiences and resources are joined together, any group can help create a vibrant and more sustainable city where anyone would want to live."

YouTube users are now able to pop a link to crowd funding sites Kickstarter and IndieGoGo right inside their videos | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it

YouTube users are now able to pop a link to crowd funding sites Kickstarter and IndieGoGo right inside their videos. Google announced the new use of the Annotations feature on the official YouTube Creator blog this morning.

On the surface this may not seem like that big of a deal, allowing a small link in the video window to a fundraising page, from a user engagement angle this is huge. Every barrier that is removed between a project and a potential funder is a win for the crowd funding movement.

This also bolsters YouTube’s position as the dominant marketplace for original online video content. The video giant has been pushing it’s new channel format in recent months, and is following the lead of creators like Freddie Wong in embracing crowd funding as a means of financing content.

TechCrunch | Manila-Based Social Music Service Twitmusic Makes It Into 500 Startups | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
A big domestic market of 92 million people, English as an official language, a large IT talent pool, and a strategic location in South East Asia: the Philippines surely has the potential to become the next web powerhouse coming out of Asia.

One pioneering startup from the Philippines is Twitmusic, a Twitter-based social music service aimed at artists and their fans. As an artist, having an account on Twitter is one thing, but Twitmusic allows them to upload and share songs (and other content) through Twitter in a matter of minutes.

Existing Twitter users can log in to leave comment on tracks, “love” them, re-tweet them, or share links with followers using the #nowplaying hashtag with one click. Users can also embed individual songs elsewhere, download them (here‘s a pretty popular, downloadable one), or buy tracks on Twitmusic via iTunes.

Tony Meloto « Sometimes, a Skoll Awardee writes something so powerful, you want to read it over. | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it

Sometimes, a Skoll Awardee writes something so powerful, you want to read it over. And over. Because pieces like Tony Meloto’s reminds us why we’re here, how what we’re doing matters in the most profound way. I. love. it. What a beautiful way to begin our week. An excerpt from the front-page feature in a Philippines national paper:
“When we are not blinded by a desire for money or paralyzed by a lack of it, we learn to use our creativity, raise passion-driven caretakers and volunteers whose nobility cannot be bought and the integrity of the mission is not compromised….Jeff Skoll said it simply at our lunch meeting on the first day: ‘Just tell your story,’ how your crazy idea grew wings and flew out of the cage.”
In other news, just after the Skoll World Forum, Meloto’s organization, Gawad Kalinga, launched the Bayani Challenge and successfully gathered 10,000 volunteers in 5 provinces (http://www.interaksyon.com/article/29342/mass-build-for-300-houses-gathers-10000-volunteers or www.gk1world.com/bc2012

Daniel Cubias: Who Is the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs?

Who Is the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs?

The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a nonprofit that works with under-served kids to help them stay in school, has had tremendous success since its founding in New York City in 1987 by Steve Mariotti.

NFTE partners with low-income schools and trains teachers in the program. The classes, often electives, may strike some as tangential to American education's stated focus on the Three R's. However, inspiring kids to become entrepreneurs is not some 21st century version of home ec.

Few immigrants who create their own businesses, even if successful, have a well-developed business plan. However, if their kids have learned the basics, they can turn around and teach their parents.

Coursera raises $16M for free online education for the masses

Coursera raises $16M for free online education for the masses | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
Two Stanford University professors and a dream to educate the world, that's what started Coursera.

Two Stanford University professors and a dream to educate the world, that’s what started Coursera. The service offers university-level courses to anyone with an Internet for free and just raised $16 million from venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

“Imagine a future where the top universities are educating thousands of people,” said co-founder Andrew Ng in an interview with VentureBeat.

Ng and co-founder Daphne Koller started Coursera with three classes in fall 2011 from Stanford. For at least one of the classes, Ng tells me, there were 100,00 students enrolled. In typical online course fashion, lectures were video-tapped and there was a discussion forum for students to get help or discuss concepts. Koller and Ng were blown away by the forums: Thousands of students were conversing about their course work, with question response times averaging at 22 minutes. Because of the shear volume of students from around the world, someone was almost always online to help.

Drop In! Top Schools from Berkeley to Yale Now Offer Free Online Courses

Drop In! Top Schools from Berkeley to Yale Now Offer Free Online Courses | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
On average, it will cost $55,600 to attend Princeton, Penn, Michigan or Stanford next year. But now you can enroll in online courses at all four universities online for free

.The universities won’t just be posting lectures online like MIT’s OpenCourseWare project, Yale’s Open Yale Courses and the University of California at Berkeley’s Webcast. Rather, courses will require deadlines, evaluations, discussions and, in some cases, a statement of achievement.

“The technology as well as the sociology have finally matured to the point where we are ready for this,” says Daphne Koller, a co-founder of Coursera, the for-profit platform classes will run on.

“This is a group that didn’t grow up at a time when there weren’t browsers,” Koller adds. “They have the mental state that allows them to say, ‘I’m willing to get a good portion of my education online.’”

Coursera grew out of an experiment in Stanford’s computer science department that opened up a handful of classes to non-Stanford students via the Internet. The online students received a signed letter from the instructor (but no credit) upon completion.

The equity-based platform allows accredited investors to invest in privately held startups (#Crowdfunding platform #CircleUp launches with $1.5M http://t.co/2C49rHeZ #equity #investors #startups #vc...)...

So how is CircleUp dealing with the regulatory environment now? It's only welcoming accredited investors onto its platform--and it says it will continue to work exclusively with accredited investors even after the JOBS Act takes effect.

Other than that one irritating detail, the site is an ideal place for entrepreneurs and investors alike. Those looking to invest have the security of knowing that the platform focuses on high-growth consumer-product companies with at least $1 million in revenue--companies that produce food, personal care, pet products, apparel, and more. And entrpreneurs on the site are mingling with individuals who invest $1000 to $25,000 per investment.
