'Random act of happiness' to hit Downtown

'Random act of happiness' to hit Downtown | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
The goodwill invasion will march today at 4 p.m.

Today from 4-7 p.m., volunteers and Downtown supporters will gather and march to a series of local businesses and landmarks playing an important role in the redevelopment of Downtown. In a kind of communal morale boost, they’ll carry encouraging signs, shout positive messages and create a sort of goodwill parade, starting at the Beat, hitting Symphony Park and the Arts Factory and ending back at the El Cortez. Organized by the Delivering Happiness team, the event is being dubbed a “random act of happiness” and a show of appreciation for people working to revitalize Downtown. That’s my kind of invasion.

Local Startup Ayloo Wants to Build Passion

Local Startup Ayloo Wants to Build Passion | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
Three members of the Class of 2006 from Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas have developed a social networking website that could churn out the valley's next generation of community organizers.

The brains behind tech startup Ayloo.net, Mark Cicoria, Mark Johnson and Shaun Swanson, found a way for people who share a passion for everything from urban farming to alternative education to tech talk to participate in online "streams" or conversations that use moderators to keep the dialog on topic.

The organizers of Build a Greener Block, which is planning a bustling street scene for the 1000 block of South Main Street next weekend, used Ayloo to communicate with one another and drum up interest in their form of environmentally friendly urban renewal.

Exclusive: Kickstarter funding explodes, on pace to triple this year to around $300M | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
We've been reporting on a lot of very cool tech and gaming projects that have found huge success on the New York based crowdfunding platform Kickstarter this year.

While gaming and tech projects have represented the majority of the company’s multi-million dollar projects, they are not the majority of funding on the platform.

If big name professional filmakers and musicians take to the platform this year in the same way that game designers have, Kickstarter funding is likely to grow even faster.

#ShiftVegas What's behind Tony Hsieh's unrelenting drive to remake downtown Las Vegas? #GreenerBlocks | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
By now all of Las Vegas knows that Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos, is intensely interested and invested in downtown. He is moving his company there. He’s using a chunk of his fortune to help transform the urban core.

Hsieh wants to give his employees a downtown they can call home, not a longer commute to a decrepit neighborhood. He’s sure it will make them better employees, and better employees make better profits.

This has motivated Hsieh to put money into the ailing education system and the arts, and invest in small businesses that are the backbone of a neighborhood. He’s also working to attract high-tech start-ups.

Great Basin Permaculture - Yours on Earth at Vegas Roots Community Garden building up the soil and community | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it

Great Basin Permaculture has been busy at Vegas Roots Community Garden (formerly Tonopah Community Garden) building up the soil and community at our permaculture demonstration plot. This year alone, with your help, we've installed irrigation, planted grapes, 7 fruit trees and a 3 sisters garden, installed a shade structure and are about to finish up work on our cob bench.

This Earth Day, we would like to share our successes with all of you. Some amazing bands have offered to hold a fundraiser for GBP at the garden! So come bring a picnic, enjoy the music and some cookies from our solar ovens. We'll have raffles, a scavenger hunt, chalk artists, a cob bench to show off, and a soundgarden that we would love to have you add to!

Hello Fellow Earth Day Celebrants!
Thank you for "going" on Facebook to our event coming up this Sunday, April 22 at Vegas Roots Community Garden. Please follow the link below to our website where you can register for the event and submit your $10 donation. Looking forward to see you this Sunday!

Las Vegas puts a green twist on Better Block #ShiftVegas! #GreenerBlocks | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it

We cant wait for the reports and pictures from the event.

The 1000 block of South Main Street, just north of Charleston Boulevard, is not a great place for a leisurely stroll or even to linger for long. A fenced-off, empty concrete plaza faces a row of four vacant buildings.

Wiegand said he was fronting most of the money for the project and hopes to recoup the expenses for the nonprofit event through fundraising on indiegogo.com.

Website http://www.indiegogo.com/greenerblocks
http://www.greenerblocks.com

The goal is $6,500, 75 percent of which will go to permits and other city fees. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $4,800 had been raised.

After the event, the group plans to set up a website to collect ideas for what people would like to see in their neighborhoods and to look for a different Las Vegas block to set up something more permanent.

Group Delivers Happiness To Downtown Businesses

Group Delivers Happiness To Downtown Businesses | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
Las Vegas --A group of people with smiles on their faces and colorful picket signs in their hands descended upon Downtown Vegas on Friday. However, they weren't there to protest anything.

The positive rally, or "reverse picket", was organized by Delivering Happiness, a movement that was born from the similarly-titled book by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh.

Clair Byrd works in Delivering Happiness' CHAT department, which stands for Community Happiness Action Team. She explains that after the book launched, it was turned into a bus tour to see what type of people were actually reading the book. They were expecting it would be mainly business professionals, but were surprised to find that teenagers, grandmothers, teachers, lawyers, nurses, and a gamut of other people were reading it as well. That discovery spurred the movement, whose goal it is nudge the world to a happier place.

With tuition costs mounting, the national student loan burden growing and employers complaining about a lack of certain job skills, no one is really in love with the current university education system. But with frustration comes creativity, as initiatives of all sorts attempt to dream up a better way. Should we go back to an apprentice system? Is online learning the answer? About : Living Proof: real story of the incredible progress being achieved by some of the world's poorest people

About : Living Proof: real story of the incredible progress being achieved by some of the world's poorest people | Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism | Scoop.it
Living Proof is about telling the real story of the incredible progress being achieved by some of the world's poorest people, backed by governments like ours. It's not about saying everything is great; it's certainly not about saying all aid works. But it is about telling the stories that are too often ignored - the individuals transforming their communities and countries, and the smart aid investments that are helping them realize their goals.

The Living Proof campaign is taking aim at both the head and the heart. It's calling for a cold, hard look at what's working well in the world of development. And it's asking people to celebrate - and share - the stories of those who are achieving it.

Now, more than ever, stories need to be heard about how effective, affordable solutions to the global problem of extreme poverty are being found and delivered. Transparent, accountable aid has proven life-saving results.
