Short Stories About Tiny Tasks: the Microtask Book...

If you like crowdsourcing, then you'll love what Microtask did with all their top content - they turned it into a pretty good looking book. And they're giving them out for free.  This book is made up of blog-posts from the last few years... In it, you can find some great short stories about some tiny tasks. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of crowdsourcing. ; ;

This edition comes with some cool social features, so please feel free to share it and join the conversation. You canalso download a generic ePub version. Shortly, we will also make it available from the Amazon Kindle and the iBook Store

Microtask is a Finnish company creating technologies for crowdsourcing and distributed labor.

much useful background information is found here:  ;

Why not here in Las Vegas? When will it happen here? If not Downtown, where? This just seems to make sense. Who will join us in this effort?
Join the conversation at

Alan of is working on a Crowdsourcing proposal right now ... we can do this ... with or without the resources of the Downtown Project but especially with their shipping container initiative it seems especially timely and appropriate for downtown: The Zappos-affiliated Downtown Project has proposed a much-discussed shipping container development at 7th and Fremont streets. The project would use actual shipping containers for bars, restaurants and such.

design is also used by great stuff and no reason Vegas cannot lead on the world stage

We Are Investing In Community

VegasTechFund is a seed stage investment fund focused on investing in founders and startups solving huge problems who are committed to building a vibrant, connected tech community in downtown Las Vegas. We see an opportunity to create a City as an incubator and aim to invest in companies who share that vision and want to build on it.

Our Methodology

We invest in founders who:

Aim to increase the creative class of downtown Las Vegas by solving awesome problems with an amazing team.
Are building teams that are excited about being an active member of the Vegas Tech Community. This includes mentoring and collaborating with other companies in the community, having community dinners and organizing and participating in tech events such as Vegas Jelly. We’ve also been known to have a drink or two together.
Are insanely passionate about their company. We want to build a group of founders that create successful businesses that improve the brand of Vegas Tech.
Our Process

We have a slightly different process than many other investment funds, one that highly involves the growing VegasTech community. There are three stages to our evaluation process:

Community Evaluation: Our community is built by the people in it. We build community through relationships. Want to know how to get funded? Come see for yourself. The more people you connect with the more likely you are to get community support. We work from community references. You can choose to do this on your own or reach out to us first. It’s your choice, but there’s no doubt that more things can happen once you’re here and active.
Founder Passion Evaluation: By now you’ve shared your company vision with our team. Now it’s time to chat about what drives you and how that can contribute to our community. We’ll start with a chat, quick phone call, Skype or trading of smoke signals with someone from our team. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions about the Vegas Tech community! Your time is valuable so we don’t want to waste it with more meetings if your company’s focus doesn’t align with our investment goals (it’s not you, it’s us…we’re weird).
Product/Business Evaluation: This is a chance for one of our partners, friends or invested companies to learn more about your product and business vision. We all come from a wide range of backgrounds in technology so who you meet with will depend on your startup’s focus. We’ll take a deep dive into your customer, market, business model, and growth strategies. This is a chance to show that you have the best team to solve the problem.
All three points in the process are evaluation points. Our partners are committed to making sure we invest in companies who support the values of the community. Only after we get through all three will we start talking about terms and investment. We’re confident those can be worked out once we know we have the right fit for the Vegas Tech Community.

We look forward to working with you to build the Vegas Tech community. Sure, it sounds long but there will be a lot of drinks along the way and you’ll meet some amazing people!

Next Steps

The best way to get started on the investment path is to visit downtown Las Vegas and see what’s happening with the Vegas Tech Community firsthand. Prior to the visit, start by monitoring #VegasTech on Twitter. This will give you an idea of current and upcoming events. You’ll also want to check out and These will let you know what’s happening and where we’re going from here.

Next, find your way here and come check out an event like the weekly Vegas Jelly. This casual coworking meetup provides a great opportunity to introduce yourself to the community. You can also check out our Foursquare list to get an idea of the places to go and the best things to do while there. Be sure to add us as a friend (VegasTechFund) and then complete the tips on the list.

If you’re not quite ready to make the trip (or you’ve been a thousand times), the next step is to fill out our application to share a few bits of information with our team. Only proceed if you:

Are Insanely Passionate
Are Solving Awesome Problems
Like to Dance in Celebration

Open Source Permaculture and Local Food Systems - Open Source Ecology

This is our strategy for creating open source permaculture local food systems including plants and open source technology for low cost high appropriate tech self-sufficiency.

See for the transcript and more information.

At Open Source Ecology, we encourage food production methods that are -

Open-source - the information needed to build a working food production system should be shared freely on the Internet. The information must be free for anyone to access, use and improve, with no intellectual property restrictions and no charge. It took us millenia to figure it out, but we now have the know-how to produce abundant food just about anywhere. Let's spread this know-how without restriction. [1] Replicable and scalable - With the knowledge available openly, anyone will be able to make their own food system, whether to grow food for themselves or for hundreds of people. Cheap - All the know-how in the world is no good if you can't get the equipment needed to set up a food system. We aim to make farm equipment, seeds and the other necessities of agriculture as cheap as possible.

Random Hacks of Kindness is a global community of innovators building practical open technology to make the world a better place.

Our mission is to make the world a better place through a global community of innovation developing practical open technology.

Problem Solving

RHoK is unique in the space of “apps competitions”, “hackathons” and “technology for social good”. RHoK’s model is to start from identifying, defining and refining problem definitions provided by subject matter experts and local stakeholders. This ensures that volunteer time is focused on solving real problems for real people.

Capacity Building

We work to build the capacity of other people and organizations. We are committed to building the capacity of subject matter experts and local stakeholders to identify problems where technology can help, volunteer technologists to understand these problems and create solutions, and event organizers to run events that bring these groups together for close collaboration.

Partnerships are at the core of everything we do. Between the RHoK global partners (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, NASA, HP and the World Bank), between subject matter experts with problems and volunteers that work to address them, and between local event organizers and over 150 local organizations that support them. RHoK is a platform for partnerships, and our results depend on the quality of those partnerships.

We have hosted 4 global events to date, in 45 cities around the globe and over 4000 participants, as well as numerous independent community events. During the RHoK 4 global event in December 2011, over 120 problems were addressed by 110 technology solutions. Solutions developed by the RHoK community have been used by organizations such as the World Bank, governments, emergency responders, and citizens.

Help the Happy Post Project get funded on GOOD by doing good!!! ;!/HappyPostPro

The Colombian government has invited Happy Post to visit three villages affected by decades of armed conflict. With this grant, we can meet people directly impacted by the conflict, spread happiness in their communities, showcase their stories, and ultimately inspire lasting change.

We have three goals. First, we’ll collect and deliver messages of support from the global Happy Post community to soldiers and civilians in conflict areas. Second, we’ll ask them to share their stories and perspectives of happiness. Finally, we’ll create a short documentary to share this experience.

This project can be funded with this $3,000 grant, which will be used for flights, video equipment, production costs, and happiness workshops in each village.

herding the crowd to environmental projects in your neighborhood

the crowd-resourcing website that helps bring your environmental ideas to life, block by block

Climate change. Toxic landfills. Shrinking parks—and wildlife.

You care about these things, and you want to pitch in. So you recycle, buy local and use only ‘green’ products. You’re doing your part for the environment. Right?

Sure. Recycling and buying local or green are great. But if you want change that goes deeper—change you can really invest in—what about starting in our backyard?

Welcome to ioby. Together, we represent a new face for change—one that’s hopeful, positive…and visible.

"It’s our backyard, and it belongs to us and our kids." –Brandon Whitney

It started with a legacy of city dwellers. These people—your everyday neighbors—created daily change. They cleaned up lots. Planted trees and gardens. Brought fresh produce to areas that needed it. They got their hands dirty. But few noticed. Joyful as it was, the change was tiny—and isolated. To gain steam, it needed power, money, people and hype. It needed a platform.

Enter ioby. ioby connects change with resources. It enables all of us to invest in change—then see (and live with) the return on our investment. These pages aren’t glamorous. There are no celebrities, no large-scale protests. There are everyday neighbors taking small steps—bringing sunlight, open space, fresh food and greenery into our backyards.

Small steps have big impact. They can ripple through the city. To us, that’s real—and it goes far. It goes beyond your intentions, beyond the abstract, beyond the simple ‘click.’ Take a look around! Pick a project close to your home or your heart—and help us spread the word.

Las Vegas City Council Approves New Bill That Will Expand Community Gardens
Gardens Will Now Be Allowed In Certain Residential, Commercial And Industrial Zoning Districts

At today’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, the council approved a bill that will allow community gardens in certain residential, commercial and industrial zoning districts throughout the city. This bill, which was sponsored by Ward 5 Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow, was sparked by the very successful Vegas Roots Community Garden (formerly the Tonopah Community Garden), and the fact that other people are interested in establishing community gardens in their neighborhoods, as well. This bill promotes healthy neighborhoods and helps to provide food for low-income individuals. The bill would allow weekly sales of goods from that garden.

“Community gardens are becoming more prominent in Las Vegas due to the trend of leading a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. Residents want to grow fresh fruits and vegetables near their home, and this bill will allow for that use to be expanded,” Councilman Barlow said. “It is my hope that more people will get involved with their neighborhoods and consider taking part in a community garden.”
