Walkonomics - How walkable is your street? - About

Walkonomics - How walkable is your street? Walkonomics combines Open Data with Crowdsourcing to map how pedestrian-friendly each street is. Use the website to check how walkable your street is and add your own rating.

http://www.walkonomics.com/w/index.php/about

What is the WalkoBot?

The WalkoBot is an automatic system that rates the walkability of streets by interpreting public datasets.  Many of the streets in the UK and USA have been automatically rated by the WalkoBot using publically available data.  Wherever possible the WalkoBot will use current data which is directly related to each rating category. Much effort is made to ensure that, wherever possible, ratings are based upon accurate data. If you don't agree with the ratings provided by the WalkoBot you can always add your own rating which will affect the overall rating average.  Once enough local users have added their ratings, any errors or inaccuracies should be cancelled out.

Who is behind Walkonomics?

Before founding Walkonomics.com, Adam Davies spent over 6 years working to improve the walkability, bikeability and sustainability of streets, neighbourhoods and cities in the UK, Europe and Africa. This included designing and leading over 70 walkability assessments for local communities, government and the private sector and working with these organisations to create more walkable street environments. He has worked with the United Nations, Transport for London, Department for Transport, London 2012, Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment and the Royal National Institute for the Blind.  Adam has also contributed to various innovative pieces of research on 'Shared Space' streets, disabled peoples access, climate change and understanding the links between obesity and the built environment. You can follow him on Twitter. @Walkonomics

Behind the scenes of a failed Kickstarter project

A little more than half of the projects on Kickstarter fail. But understanding those failures can help others avoid the same fate. So, I spoke to one of the founders of a failed project to understand what lessons others might be able to learn.

So a few possible lessons one can draw from the Dawsons’ experience is that funding a Kickstarter is possible for anyone — it just requires a willingness to ask people for money. Freeloaders exist on Kickstarter as they do everywhere, so offering an actual product or more tangible rewards might help someone doing a public project get the pledges he or she needs.

And finally, if the first project doesn’t work, maybe your second one will.

For more on the Kickstarter phenomenon see Om’s epic interview with Co-founder Perry Chen:

Grockit Wants to Build a Pinterest for Learning

Grockit's latest product re-configures online content such as YouTube videos, Wikipedia entries and ebooks into ordered lesson plans.

So how does Learnist beat Google as a learning tool? Or Pinterest, for that matter?

Grockit founder Farbood Nivi argues that expert curation helps avoid the misinformation, hacked-together how-to articles and other useless content one must weed through in a typical Google search. It also provides a clear learning path and eventually, he hopes, will include some form of assessment.

“We don’t think it’s a Wikipedia replacement,” he says. “We think it’s a Wikipedia enhancement.”

The scope of content he has in mind is larger than that of both online course platforms such as Udemy as well as that of Sophia, a startup with a similar mission of helping experts curate content that focuses on academics. Along with lessons about common core standards, it includes topics such as “how to find the best pizza in Brooklyn” or “how to hack your kitchen” that don’t require courses

Investing in Social Entrepreneurship: A $1 Trillion Market Paradigm Shifts & Entrepreneurship: Investing in Social Solutions vs. Symptoms

'Paradigm Shifts & Entrepreneurship: Investing in Social Solutions vs. Symptoms'

Investing in Social Entrepreneurship: A $1 Trillion Market

On the second day of the SoCap conference, Tone Rosingholm of JPMorgan emphasized that the investment opportunity in the social entrepreneurship economy in the US is between $400 million and $1 trillion.

According to Rosingholm, that’s 10 times more than what is donated in any typical year in the U.S. She wrapped up her presentation by alluding to a clear shift with more people wanting to invest in business, rather than donating to causes, in order to change the world.

This went along with what Kevin Jones had mentioned to me a few weeks earlier after he keynoted the Swedish Venture Capitalist Association annual meeting: "Impact investment isn’t a movement any more, but that it’s a real and fast growing asset class."

Transformational Entrepreneurship: Where Technology Meets Societal Impact

The slow decline of industrial manufacturing in developed nations and recent failures of financial capitalism across the globe have sent us searching for a new model of economic growth. I see the two movements of Technology Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship beginning to converge into a promising solution. An increasing number of entrepreneurs are awakening to the possibility of combining the scalable tools and methodology of Technology Entrepreneurship with the world-centric value system of Social Entrepreneurship. Together they create a new type of entrepreneurship that could become our primary source of socioeconomic value creation. What do we call this movement? I propose we call it "Transformational Entrepreneurship."*

How #Coworking Works

from https://www.facebook.com/deskmag.coworking How #Coworking Works
https://deskwanted.com/coworking/coworking_works_infographic.jpg Deskmag is the magazine about the new type of work and their places, how they look, how they function, how they could be improved and how we work in them. We call them coworking spaces.

We also take a look at collaborative, shared office spaces and other alternative and modern workspaces which are home to the new breed of creatives, independent workers and small companies.

Until recently, the form and function of workspaces has been dictated by corporate tradition. Yet a growing proportion of workers are now freelancers, contractors or small companies that have the opportunity to redefine the concept of the workspace for themselves. We like to document this movement and what people can learn from.

Kickstarted: my conversation with Kickstarter co-founder Perry Chen

Kickstarter is not just a startup-- it's part of an important shift away from the industrial manufacturing era & toward the maker economy.

excerpts below are from: http://gigaom.com/2012/05/22/kickstarter-founder-perry-chen-intervie/

People value experiences more than they value products.

When you buy local food, you’re buying both a story and a good. Also, you’re saying something about yourself and what you care about. I think that’s what you’re seeing more and more in the things that people are looking for. Often, the stuff costs a premium, and I think people are willing to pay it. It’s worth it to them.

I think Kickstarter is that platform of creativity.  I think the emotional appeal of a platform is what works. I think the old-media entities still have not figured out that part of the game plan.

We take a very liberal or what I think is a more modern view of what a creative project is. I mean, for us, a lot of food projects are definitely creative projects.  A lot of technology, maker/hacker projects are definitely creative projects. Video game projects are, for us, definitely creative projects.

We’re also looking at not just constraining but also expanding a little bit into urban design and things like bike lanes and bike racks and community gardens.  A lot of cities have approached us, talking to us about projects in that space. And we’re just having conversations — we don’t want to do anything too quickly.

We want to see how we can bring those projects in and bring them in in a way that fits Kickstarter — so they’re creative projects, with rewards and the right structure.

4 Ways To Use Pinterest To Encourage Corporate Volunteerism

Pinterest is a great marketing tool, but businesses should also start thinking about it as a unique way to promote corporate volunteerism.

How does Pinterest work as a tool for employee volunteer promotion?

Unlike Twitter and Facebook, images are key to Pinterest.  This means that in order to successfully promote and encourage volunteering efforts, photos must be at the forefront of the initiative.  Pinterest-interested businesses should thus encourage employees to take photos while they volunteer; use pictures in company handbooks to explain the company’s volunteering opportunities; and keep extra snapshots available so there is content in reserve to regularly update the Pinterest page.

Israeli Nobel Prize Winner: Entrepreneurship is The Only Way to Maintain Peace. - Forbes

What does a Nobel Prize winner has to say about entrepreneurship?

A summary of Dr Shechtman’s views on entrepreneurship, excerpted from:

 http://www.forbes.com/sites/ricardogeromel/2012/04/27/israeli-nobel-prize-winner-entrepreneurship-is-the-only-way-to-maintain-peace/

The only way to maintain long term peace in any country is by encouraging and teaching people to open companies. If a country doesn’t foster entrepreneurship, it will have to rely on natural resources. However, these natural resources will extinguish one day. This partially explains, as well, why Israel, not having natural resources, had to become a Start-up Nation.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704779704574553884271802474.html

The concept of nation is not natural. In the past, human beings organized themselves in tribes before nations. Basically, many countries are united tribes. If countries don’t focus on opening startups, they will extinguish their natural resources and tribal conflicts will take place again.

Realizing this 26 years ago, I started teaching “technological entrepreneurship” to provide students the necessary tools for launching companies either upon graduation or after a few years of working in a company. I have already taught over 10,000 students. In this class, which is open to all the students at Technion, I bring 5 kinds of guest speakers:

1st: Bootstrapping entrepreneurs.Entrepreneurs who did it on their own, without external financial help. Successful people who usually started in their basement, garage or kitchen…http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/55776

2nd: Entrepreneurs that are struggling NOW. For instance, one company that did not hire the right people, another that need better marketing research…

3rd: Lawyers to teach “The different kinds of ownerships,” “What is a company?”

4th: Patent examiners to explain what is a patent, how to register it, where, when, costs involved.

5th: A marketing professional who will teach students key tools about marketing research.”

Downtown event seeks to conjure environmentally friendly commerce

For one weekend, a downtown street block typically overcome by blight and empty storefronts was transformed into a budding area of businesses, resources and classes for the community.

http://www.lvrj.com/view/downtown-event-seeks-to-conjure-environmentally-friendly-commerce-151490095.html?ref=095

Though the pop-up businesses at Build a Greener Block were temporary, Wiegand said the event created the possibility of permanent stores. He said people inquired about how to lease space along the street.

Six weeks was all it took for Build a Greener Block to happen. Wiegand pitched his idea to Green Jelly, a group of valley residents sharing ideas about environmental issues, and developed a plan with the help of a core team and volunteers.

About
The Startup Genome aims to reduce the massive failure rate of startups in a scalable way. Check out startupcompass.co to benchmark your startup and blog.startupcompass.co to download the latest reports.
Mission
The goal of the Startup Genome project is to crack the innovation code. Solving this puzzle not only has the potential to raise the output of Silicon Valley to heights never seen before, but would allow the magic of Silicon Valley to be shared with the rest of the world. We believe success could mark the beginning of a new era, an era we are calling the Entrepreneurial Enlightenment.
Description
Throughout the last year we have laid the foundation for the Startup Genome Project by creating a system that allows us to the synthesize best practices for creating successful startups. We've combined insights from many thought leaders including Steve Blank, Alex Osterwalder, Janice Fraser, Eric Ries, Sean Ellis, Dave Mcclure and Geoffrey Moore; with Steve, Alex and Janice directly supporting the project.

We've tested our methodology with 12000+ technology startups in Silicon Valley. Many of which are at the verge of changing the world today. Our early prototypes suggest significant improvements in focus, iteration speed, time to pivot and effective outreach to mentors & service providers. But in order to take the Startup Genome Project to the next level we need a much larger dataset to validate the work that has been done so far.
General Information
We want to do for startups what Pandora did for music in order to understand how innovation happens at a fundamental level and the spread the knowledge of these principles worldwide.
