Teen pregnancy crisis

Teen pregnancy crisis | Year 9 PDHPE Journal | Scoop.it
A STUDY on Australian teenage pregnancy rates has revealed the extent of youth pregnancies, with academics slamming the Federal Government for inadequate sex education in schools.
Matthew Galanti's insight:

After anaylising this article, I reflected upon the highly alarming rate of teenage pregnancies and the urgent need for adequate sex education in schools. It is seen through this article that the use of effective contraception has decreased over the past several years. In return, this is dramatically shaping the lives of teenagers in the way their mental and pyhisical state changes. Also after reading the content contained in this article, I strongly agree with the idea of increased sex education in schools and how this can potentially alter the lives of teenagers in a positive way

Teen binge-drink fears Tasmania News - The Mercury - The Voice of Tasmania

Teen binge-drink fears Tasmania News - The Mercury - The Voice of Tasmania | Year 9 PDHPE Journal | Scoop.it
Teen binge-drink fears TEENAGE binge drinking has reached alarming levels with children as young as 13 hospitalised by it.
Matthew Galanti's insight:

After reading this article, it has alarmed me to reflect upon how many teenagers younger than myself are abusing alcohol by consuming it in large quantities in a short period of time. This irresponsible act is resulting in children being hospitilised, vomiting repeatedly and in some cases,  unconscious. Whilst reading this article, I was astonished by the fact that these Tasmanian teenagers are poorly educated about the illegal consumption of alcohol. This lack of education about alcohol consumption is unfortunatly influencing their behaviour around the dangerous drug.

Underage drinking mars Australia Day event

Underage drinking mars Australia Day event | Year 9 PDHPE Journal | Scoop.it
The Australia Day Live concert was marred by underage drinking last night as dozens of youths were taken into protective custody.
Matthew Galanti's insight:

When reading this article, I considered how the erratic behaviour of certain individuals could have such a strong influence on others, in this case, Superintendent Kylie Flower and others trying to enjoy the live concert. I reflected upon how the thoughtless use of an excessive amount of alcohol turned the teenagers’ day out into a day in protective custody and how this will possibly affect their lives in the long term. Also, after reading this article, I was pleased to read that the majority of the crowd was well behaved and not intoxicated. This proves to readers that the consumption of alcohol is not needed to provide a good time when going out.

Alcoholic Drinking Among Australian Teens Still Prevalent, Younger Teen Drinking Drops

Alcoholic Drinking Among Australian Teens Still Prevalent, Younger Teen Drinking Drops | Year 9 PDHPE Journal | Scoop.it
A survey of 25,000 Australian high school students has found that alcoholic drinking among younger teens 12 to 15 years dropped. However, those considered older teens aged 16 to 17 continued to consume alcohol in much riskier levels.
Matthew Galanti's insight:

Whilst reading this article, I was intrigued to find that out of 25,000 Australian teenagers, the percentage of students aged 12-17 drinking alcohol had dropped from 17 per cent to 11 per cent. Also, the percentage of students aged 16-17 drinking alcohol dropped from 38 per cent to 33 per cent. I believe that this improvement in teenage drinking is a fantastic first step in abolishing the majority of underage drinking in Australian teenagers. I was satisfied to read that the chief executive of the Cancer Council Victoria, Todd Harper, called upon the federal government to conduct public education campaigns on the effects of teenage drinking and I can only assume that this is what’s helping the decrease in teenage drinking in Australia.

Georgia Robson's curator insight, May 6, 2014 7:00 PM

This article highlights the affects that heavy drinking has on adolescence. I was aware of the rise in underage drinking but I never knew that people younger than 12 have been hospitalised for alcohol related injuries and health declines. I know am aware of the current statistics related to drinking.

Young Life Australia

Welcome to Young Life Australia, a dynamic not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and nurturing our youth by building confidence, values and resilience.
Matthew Galanti's insight:

After reading this article, I was shocked to see the bizzare results taken on the frequency of drinking by teenagers by the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF). With the use of various initiatives, described in the article, taken in order to help prevent teenage drinking, I am quite suprised to see such facts on the carefree way in which Australian teenagers consume such a dangerous drug.
