The Big Crack

The Big Crack | Lorraine's Landscapes and landforms | Scoop.it

SILFRA, ICELAND

Swim through Iceland’s Silfra fissure — it’s called the “Big Crack” — and you can place one hand on the Eurasian tectonic plate, the other on that of North America. Dive Iceland offers day tours from Reykjavik to the tundra of Thingvellir National Park, 31 miles east of the capital. A small staging-area platform leads to the narrow underwater corridor with three major hollows: Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral and Silfra Lagoon. The water is 39.2 degrees F at its warmest. In between the jagged rock walls, the glacier-fed water unfurls visibility, stretching to 330 feet by Hossi Elefsen’s estimates. Says the Dive Iceland instructor, “This visibility gives you the feeling of floating in outer space like an astronaut.”

When to Go: Year-round

Operator: Dive Iceland is a PADI Five Star Dive Center in Reykjavik, offering day trips to nearby attractions, including Silfra.

Price Tag: The day trip to Silfra costs $295, and includes transportation, equipment, park fees and a guide.

CD - The different types of landscapes and their distinctive landform features.

Landscapes featured include: the Australian Alps, coastal wilderness, the green cauldron, the red centre, the timeless north, Flinders Ranges, Great Barrier Reef, Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountains, Great South West Edge, Kangaroo Island, Ningaloo-Sharlk Bay, Tasmania's island heritage, The Kimberley and the wet tropics.

Stephen Latham's comment, February 19, 2013 8:55 AM
Best to show the students the types of amazing landscapes first before delving deeping. These could spark interest for a research project and presentation to the class from the students. They coud pick one of interest to them.
Rio Harvey's curator insight, April 10, 2014 2:33 AM

This page shows Australia's landscape and landforms. Using this page I want you to  understand the following questions:

1. What are Australia's World Heritage-listed sites and why are they Heritage listed?

2. How do people effect Australia's landscape and is there any chance we, as a population could destroy parts of our landscape through our everyday activities?

Death Valley's Roving Rocks

Lorraine Chaffer's insight:

Engage students in this topic with this mysterious event as a way to introduce geomorphic processes

Ask inquiry questions related to geomorphic processes eg how do plants and animals cause weathering.

Use images as a basis for inquiry and discussion

Seth Dixon's curator insight, April 20, 2016 11:10 PM

Since the video above was created, the mystery has been solved.  On very rare occasions, when it rains in the region, water will accumulate in the playa (discovermagazine.com).  If the wind is powerful and consistent enough, the wind will push the panels of ice against these rocks and over time, the ice floes will push these rocks, leaving behind distinctive trails (latimes.com). This perfect combination of water, wind, ice and heat creates a remarkable signature on the landscape (livescience.com).  The video in this article (weather.com) nicely explains how the non-aerodynamic rocks of Death Valley's Racetrack Playa move, leaving behind their trail in the hot desert.  Numerous attempts using GPS receivers (NatGeo.com) and good ol' fashioned observations have been made, but observing ice in Death Valley is so rare that no one had ever seen it until now (phys.org).
