12 BAR BLUES: Elvis Presley 'Hound dog" - Milton Berle Show 5 Jun 1956

Many of Elvis' early songs were 12 bar blues. He was often only videoed for TV from the waist up as his pelvic thrusts were 'just too much' for the generation.

Conveying a character: THE HERO: Indiana Jones Theme Song

The classic Indiana Jones theme song from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' by John Williams

This theme is very similar to the Darth Vader theme in that it has a similar heavy reliance on Brass and percussion in the performing media.

John Williams has gone for a March and military style however at around the 2min mark it is contrasted with a woodwind and string section showing a lighter side of the Hero - It's essentially a love theme of sorts as well in the movie.

The use of a MAJOR key releases the march from being as sinister and evil as Vaders theme. The main theme also has a very obvious key change at 4"30' that steps up a tone into the new key. This gives the work more 'flight' and emphasizes the 'ongoing hero".

John williams also uses the ascending 4th/5th interval leap in the main melody that is very common in his film music.

CONVEYING A CHARACTER: PRINCESS LEIAS theme: Star wars episode IV

STAR WARS Ep.IV PRINCESS LEIA'S THEME...

This theme is not as obvious or predominant as VADERS theme in its conveyance of representing a character but definetely tends towards expressing more 'beauty', 'calmness' and even 'feminity' - Eventhough it is Leias theme it has many other purposes during the 6 movies.

Excerpt from:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Princess_Leia's_Theme

Princess Leia's Theme is the musical leitmotif in the Star Wars saga that represents Princess Leia Organa. The piece is composed by John Williams, and opens on an interval of a major sixth, which becomes significant in the prequel trilogy when the love theme for Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, "Across the Stars", in contrast begins on an interval of a minor sixth.

The theme's first appearance is in A New Hope. It is first heard when Princess Leia is captured by Darth Vader. Later, it plays as R2-D2 plays her holographic message to Obi-Wan Kenobi. It is also heard very fully as Leia nostalgically remembers the innocent past.

Strangely the theme plays when Obi-Wan Kenobi is killed by Darth Vader, even though Leia is not directly involved in this event (the theme may be played here due to the fact that Vader is Leia's father, even though audiences don't know yet).

Finally, it plays in the end credits of A New Hope.

In The Empire Strikes Back, the theme is again present and is also developed in the new theme Han Solo and the Princess, which acts as the film's love theme.

Princess Leia's Theme plays as Han Solo tells Leia that he must leave to settle his debt with Jabba the Hutt. The only other time it plays is at the end of the movie, when Leia and Lando Calrissian rescue Luke Skywalker from Bespin's Cloud City, and Leia and Luke are reunited.

In Return of the Jedi, the theme is heard first as Obi-Wan and Luke discuss her while on the planet Dagobah, shortly after Yoda's death. Later, it is heard as Leia shoots a stormtrooper on the Sanctuary Moon of Endor and when she reveals her relationship with Luke to Han at the end.

The theme was revived for the "prequel" trilogy. Its first occurrence in a sequential viewing of George Lucas's revised Star Wars saga is in Revenge of the Sith when Bail Organa, discussing with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, says that he and his wife will adopt Leia. It is next heard during the final montage of shots at the end of the film as her adoptive parents, Bail Organa and Breha Antilles Organa, hold the newborn Leia. It reappears soon after during the end credits of the movie.

In the episode Assassin from the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the theme is used when Padmé and Ahsoka land on Alderaan.

Kasan Moor's Theme may have developed from this theme, as it sounds similar.

FILM MUSIC: Conveying a character: Star Wars- The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)

This music is Darth Vader's theme, also known as "The Imperial March"...This theme conveys a sinister character through the use of pop culture ideals. The heavy use of Military Band instrumentation of Brass and Percussion. The trumpets are playing in their middle register and the Trombones in their high register. The tonality of the piece is in a MINOR key to emphasize the 'dark', 'evil' and scary tone colour as we discussed in class.

 From the Star wars WOOKIEPEDIA:

"The Imperial March," also called "Darth Vader's Theme," is a recurring musical theme of the Star Wars movies. It was composed by John Williams and first appeared in the film The Empire Strikes Back. The theme is based on the well known funeral march from Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor and on "Mars, the Bringer of War" by Gustav Holst.

One of the best known symphonic movie themes, it is a classic example of a leitmotiv, a recurrent theme associated with characters or events in a drama. "The Imperial March" is the theme music that represents the authoritarian Galactic Empire. As Anakin Skywalker is stripped of all individuality, he, in essence, becomes one with the Empire as Darth Vader; hence the reason the march is often associated with him as well. "The Imperial March" represents all that is the Empire; therefore, it is nearly equivalent to a galactic anthem. To the Galactic Empire, "The Imperial March" represents strength, order, and control. However, to the Rebel Alliance it is symbolic of tyranny, oppression, and hate.

Although played by an orchestra on the movie soundtrack, it is often played by brass bands; military bands are particularly effective in delivering the theme's martial stance. "The Imperial March" was also played by No Doubt at some of their live concerts.

In the movies (except for A New Hope), the march is played when Darth Vader appears, or when he is mentioned.

TRUMPET: Playing in an extreme high register: Maynard Ferguson 'Theme from Rocky'

Maynard Ferguson and his band play Gonna Fly Now...from the film "Rocky."

Maynard has been called the Christina Aguilera of Trumpet playing. Not always the most 'tasteful' of trumpet players however, like christina, a master of his instrument that pushes the boundaries and limits. Many trumpet players struggle to play in this extreme high register. Many just cannot do it.

Maynard brought this still of brass playing to the fore and was a trumpet innovator in the late 60s....70s...up until he died in 2006.
