This is a terrific site for poetry from around the world. The poems are posted online and comments are encouraged from readers.  Hundreds of poems are available on a range of topics. For example Violetta Simatupang’s poems First Shaman Encounter is vivid in its imagery of natural settings and evokes images of Indonesian with references to temples, kris and a sodden white kebaya and the two baskets and black chicken on the Island of Trunyan.

Vietnamese Poetry

Selected works by modern Vietnamese poets in their original and English versions


Thomas D. Le provides background information on the New Poetry Movement in Vietnam. This movement was the beginning of the battle between the new and the old who derided the movement as having little regard for the art of poetry. Thirteen poets are featured on the site and poems are in Vietnamese and in English translation.  Some of the poetry is socio-political and some is about people, places, seasons, grieving and art.  What distinguishes this poetic form from traditional poetry is the use of new poetic styles and forms and the experimentation of these forms in a new Romanised script.

Ko Un Biography

Ko Un: Korean Poet, World Poet. Ko Un is Korea’s foremost poet and now recognised as a world poet. He is a prolific writer and it is said that he “writes a poem every time he breathes.” The site provides comments by poets Allan Ginsberg and Michael McClure. A short biography of Ko Un’s life and experiences contextualises his poetry and some analysis of his passion for a range of subjects is explored. Three of Ko Un’s poems are presented in English translation: Arrows, Maternal Grandfather and Indangsu.
