How to rebuild the Republican brand

How to rebuild the Republican brand | Global Politics - Yemen | Scoop.it

The Republican Party drew its lowest approval ratings in history during the US government shutdown and debt ceiling impasse. Political strategists offer five recommendations for how to rebuild the party's brand.

earthdog58's insight:

I keep saying the same thing: we all know what the Republicans are against ... but what are they actually FOR?

Al-Shabaab's Westgate Siege was all about Somalia | Think Africa Press

Al-Shabaab's Westgate Siege was all about Somalia | Think Africa Press | Global Politics - Yemen | Scoop.it

Last month’s siege at the Westgate mall in Nairobi – a brazen and calculated attack which left at least 67 people dead – shocked people around the world. The families of victims are in mourning and citizens are demanding to know what really happened. Many are also wondering what attack tells us about al-Shabaab, the Somalia Islamist militant group responsible for the assault, and the future of security in the region.

Crucially, many are asking whether Westgate marks the start of a new international focus for al-Shabaab.

earthdog58's insight:

Kenya can't be left to deal with this alone ... whatever Al-Shabaab's agenda, it is a global issue.

A Cell Phone that Will Last Forever - Goodnet

A Cell Phone that Will Last Forever - Goodnet | Global Politics - Yemen | Scoop.it
The idea behind Phonebloks

Dave Hakens has come up with a brilliant concept that might just revolutionize the way electronics are made, starting with cell phones.

Phonebloks would be a customized cell phone made up of easily detachable blocks, allowing the user to build their own phone depending on individual needs.

earthdog58's insight:

"So, what has this got to do with Global Politics, Earthdog?"

Well, I'll tell you. Imagine the potential this could have in the developing world, where people could build their phone over time, as they can afford to add new blocks. Easily clip-in/clip-out blocks would even allow people to share blocks - for example, a good quality camera that is not needed on a daily basis, but useful at times.

And if the blocks are made in a way such that they can easily be recycled (once they have been passed from phone to phone and reached the end of their useful life) then maybe places like Agbogbloshie [http://theweek.com/article/index/250685/going-up-in-smoke] would cease to exist.

"This isn't a damn game!" House Speaker John Boehner said Friday at a news conference on the budget stalemate that has led to the government shutdown.
earthdog58's insight:

Then why is the Republican party treating it like it is one?

Having a tantrum, and trying to score points over something that as already been put onto the statute books is more important than running the country? Seriously?

Do they have any idea how foolish they are making themselves look?

MSP Jenny Marra points out there are more trafficking victims in Scottish jails than perpetrators, as she launches consultation.

Human trafficking is met with disbelief by most people. As that story was recounted by a police officer to a group of us gathered that day in Aberdeen to discuss human trafficking, the room was silent in astonishment. "Human trafficking" the officer ended by saying, "doesn't just happen in Scotland, it happens in our city".
