Although often seen as rivals in global politics, the US and France are working together to prevent parts of Africa from falling into the hands of al-Qaeda-linked fighters.

 

These Western countries - and their allies - want Africa to do more to promote stability so that extremists can be effectively denied room to operate.

Emotional end to talks in Bali, as WTO concludes first global trade deal in nearly 20 years.

 

A deal to boost global trade has been approved by the 159 members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for the first time in nearly two decades, keeping alive the possibility that a broader agreement can be reached in the future.

 

WTO director-general Roberto Azevedo shed tears during the summit's closing ceremony on Saturday as he thanked the host nation Indonesia, and his wife.

 

"For the first time in history, the WTO has finally delivered" on large scale negotiations, he said.

The significance of the changes mobile technology has made to the continent cannot be over-stated - or perhaps even understood by people outside the continent.

 

African countries are leading the way in so many innovative uses of the technology - necessity is perhaps the driving force moving things forward in directions more 'developed' countries can't even see.

The long, slow process of climate change may trigger "surprise" shifts that could threaten human communities in years or decades, researchers warned Tuesday.

 

In a 200-page report, the scientists call for an early-warning system that would watch bellwethers like Midwestern aquifers, Antarctic ice sheets and tropical coral reefs for signs that a "tipping point" is coming. Accelerated environmental changes can already be seen in the loss of Arctic sea ice and bigger wildfires since 1980, the authors said.
