Americans already think a third of the budget goes to foreign aid. What if it did? | Global Politics - Yemen | Scoop.it
Let's increase foreign aid by $1.47 trillion a year. The reasons not to are quite weak.
earthdog58's insight:

But does aid help? Or does it actually make things worse?

Everyone should read "Dead Aid" by Dambisa Moyo - a radical look at what aid is and what is does (and doesn't do)

(ISBN 978-0141031187  -  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dead-Aid-working-another-Africa/dp/0141031182/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383960143&sr=8-1&keywords=dead+aid )

Amazon note: "Dambisa Moyo's Dead Aid reveals why millions are actually poorer because of aid, unable to escape corruption and reduced, in the West's eyes, to a childlike state of beggary.

We all want to help. Over the past fifty years $1 trillion of development aid has flowed from Western governments to Africa, with rock stars and actors campaigning for more. But this has not helped Africa. It has ruined it.

Dead Aid shows us another way. Using hard evidence to illustrate her case, Moyo shows how, with access to capital and with the right policies, even the poorest nations can turn themselves around. First we must destroy the myth that aid works - and make charity history."

Overseas aid 'good for donors too'

Overseas aid 'good for donors too' | Global Politics - Yemen | Scoop.it

Giving foreign aid can bring important strategic advantages to the donor country, according to a study by US and Australian academics.

The study wanted to test claims that giving humanitarian aid was in the self-interest of the donor as well as the recipient.

earthdog58's insight:

Cynical self-interest from the rich developed world? Surely not!

I think (because I AM bitter and cynical) that pretty much ALL aid is in the self-interest of the giver.

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it, read "Dead Aid" by Dambisa Moyo (ISBN-10: 0141031182)
