Online course providers increasingly using the term 'learning experience' | Inside Higher Ed

Online course providers increasingly using the term 'learning experience' | Inside Higher Ed | Ya Bunch of MOOCs | Scoop.it
Rick W. Burkett's insight:

There is a move away from calling MOOCs courses or even MOOCs, in favor of "Learning Experience".  By breaking down "courses" into modules that equate to one concept, these modules can be repurposed for other courses, etc.  This model has been adopted as it bacame clear that a 90-minute lecture model that has controled our traditional classrooms does not translate well to online.

The post brings up a number of interesting posts.

For Stanford U. MOOC instructors, trial and error breeds success | Inside Higher Ed | Ya Bunch of MOOCs | Scoop.it
Rick W. Burkett's insight:

What an innovative idea: adjusting a course to engage students.  So it could be possible to not weaken the material or content and work on different ways to engage students.  It is interesting that there has been a tweak to add additional certification for those who enter a two week "Test Flight" that makes the student apply the content.  An additional hook for those who are there to learn and proof proficiency.

As MOOCs Move Mainstream Universities Must Pay to Play

As MOOCs Move Mainstream Universities Must Pay to Play | Ya Bunch of MOOCs | Scoop.it
Like it or not, virtually every university is now considering whether to get serious about MOOCs and I can say from firsthand experience the cost of admission is higher than you might think.
Rick W. Burkett's insight:

I think it is very hard to make any great across the board statements about the cost of MOOCs.  It depends on a lot of factors.  For credit or not.  For fun or for credit.  SIngle purpose content or retaskable content, proprietary platform or open platform, infomational or highly interative and social.  But anyone who thinks they will cost nothing is not thinking.

Rick W. Burkett's insight:

A new sub experiment in the world of MOOCs.  Looks like more interactivity.  Three delivery models:

Discussion based – Where a facilitator would manage conversation around a week’s course lectures and encourage students to continue the conversation on the Coursera discussion boardsTutoring based – Where the facilitator would both lead discussion and support students on their weekly assignmentsProject based – Where the facilitator would work with the class to come up with a set of projects students can work on independently or together to supplement regular course work

Rick W. Burkett's insight:

"Easing in" is the natural approach that those behind the cutting edge should use when approaching technology and pedagogy that is called disruptive and/or innovative.  Innovators do not generally have to navigate a ship though the minefields of the bleeding edge of technology.  They are guiding one possible path for the ships that follow.  They have to be able to pivot as the unknown plays out.  Those who follow are smart to ease in and use what works and reject or tweak what does not work.

Moving away from some of the typical questions about MOOC, if they are disruptive or innovative, if there is a workable business model, what are the completion rates, etc., Shari Smith and Karen Vignare cut through to five things that are advances for "Traditional" online learning programs.  To this I might add that they are a great source of reusable learning objects for the traditional classroom and for traditional online.
