Artificial lighting can make or break a great photo.  Diffused lighting yields the best results by providing an even distribution of light to your subject.

Using Smart Objects makes more sense than comm+opt+shift+E

Using Smart Objects makes more sense than comm+opt+shift+E | xposing world of Photography & Design | Scoop.it
Xposedbydesign's insight:

Courtesy of Planet Photoshop:

If you never used Stamp Visible before (merges all layers into one) this probably won't make much sense to you.

Here is an example of why you would use "comm+opt+sht+E" which is the formula for STAMP VISIBLE.

Imagine you are woking on the above photo, after adding a curves layer, maybe you added a blank layer to remove blemishes, then you added a couple of adjustment layers, then you applied a vignette on a blank layer, then you added your copyright and before you know it, you have 7 layers.

The final touch is to sharpen it, how do you do it with all these layers?

You apply the stamp visible command so you have all your layers into one and this is the layer that you sharpen, however the sharpening is only applied to this new layer and not the ones underneath it.

Smart Object Instead Of Stamp Visible:
FOR years I've been telling people to press Command-Option-Shift-E (PC: Ctrl-Alt-Shift-E) to make a merged copy of all visible layers.

THE only problem with that method is it's a snapshot, so if you change the underlying layers, the merged version will not change.

INSTEAD, select all the layers and convert them to a smart object (Layer>Smart Objects>Convert to Smart Object).

NOW you can work on that layer, but still have live access to all the original layers just by double-clicking on the smart object.

I photographed this model at Lake Mead, Las Vegas a few years ago.

Give your Model glossy Lips in Photoshop.

Give your Model glossy Lips in Photoshop. | xposing world of Photography & Design | Scoop.it
Xposedbydesign's insight:

Courtesy of Planet Photoshop:

IF you see a shiny highlight on your subject’s lips, and you want to make it look glossier, duplicate the Background layer then change your layer blend mode to Screen to brighten the entire image.

OPTION-click (PC: Alt-click) the Add Layer Mask icon to hide this brighter layer behind a black mask.

PRESS D to set your Foreground color to white; choose a small, soft-edged Brush (B); and paint over those white highlight areas on the lips and they’ll get even glossier.

I photographed this model in a friends backyard using a 2 light setup. He built a little pool using 2 x 4's and a plastic tarp, filled it with about 3" of water and poured in a beautiful model.

A quick and simple tip for adjusting size using SCRUBBY SLIDERS:

Whenever you see an input box with numbers, hover your cursor over the text next to that box and you’ll see a double-sided arrow.

Click on the text and drag to change the values. Hold down the Option (PC: Alt) key as you drag and the sliders change at 1/10 speed. This allows you to get a precise setting.

Hold down the Shift key and the amount will rapidly change at 10x the speed.

GO to Layer>New Fill Layer>Gradient, set the Mode to Soft Light in the New Layer dialog, and click OK.

CLICK on the Gradient thumbnail in the Gradient Fill dialog, and choose Special Effects from the Gradient Editor's flyout menu.

I love the Soft Stripes preset to create a light effect. Don't forget to play around with the angle, opacity, color stops, color, etc.

Create A Most-Used Brush Set

IF you're tired of having to dig through all the "funky" brushes in the Brush Preset Picker to get to the ones that you want, then try this:

FIRST, open the Preset Manager (under the Edit menu), and organize and remove any unwanted or unused preset brushes.

THEN, click the Save Set button to create your own set of presets that only contain the brushes that you use over and over again.

IN the Brush Preset Picker's flyout menu, select Replace Brushes and choose your set of saved brushes.

Removing the RED in Skin Tones

Removing the RED in Skin Tones | xposing world of Photography & Design | Scoop.it
Xposedbydesign's insight:

Courtesy of Planet Photoshop:

Here's one way to tone down the Red's.

IF you’re working on an RGB image and you’ve done your basic color correction but the flesh tone in your image still seems too red (a common problem), here’s a tip to fix it fast.

FIRST, select the flesh tone areas in your image (using the Lasso tool, etc.).

ADD a slight feather by going under the Select menu and choosing Feather. Enter a 1-pixel feather for low-res images; 3-5 pixels for high-res images.

GO under the Image menu, under Adjustments, and choose Hue/Saturation. From the Edit pop-up menu, choose Reds. Now lower the Saturation slider until your skin tones look more natural and click OK.

It's a much better idea to add a HUE/SATURATION adjustment layer because this comes with a built in Mask.

IF you try this tip you will soon discover it's not easy to accurately select all the skin areas, so you can take the easy way out and convert to Black & White like I did in the photo above which did have very red skin tones. If you scroll down a few posts you will see her in color.

Add a hairline Stroke around your Image

Add a hairline Stroke around your Image | xposing world of Photography & Design | Scoop.it
Xposedbydesign's insight:

Courtesy of Planet Photoshop:

STROKE IT:
When preparing an image for display, as the final step add a 3-pixel black hairline around the perimeter to define the edge. Doing this is even more important if your image is sort of white at the edges and the website you are displaying it on is also white.

I applied a stroke to the image above using this method.

Select the entire image (Command-A [PC: Ctrl-A]). Then, go to Edit>Stroke and set the Width to 3 px, the color to black, and the Location to Inside.

This will work even on the Background Layer.

I shot this model in a Las Vegas park and applied a Nik software effect to it.

Quick #photoshop tip 4 removing Stray Hairs using Clone tool.

Quick #photoshop tip 4 removing Stray Hairs using Clone tool. | xposing world of Photography & Design | Scoop.it
Xposedbydesign's insight:

Courtesy of Planet Photoshop:

Removing Stray Hairs
Stray hairs are hard to remove with the Healing Brush tool because when you get near other hairs, the tool tends to smudge.

Instead, use the Clone Stamp tool (S) with a brush that's a little larger than the hairs you want to remove.

Now, click on the brush preview in the Options Bar to open the Brush Preset Picker and drag the Hardness slider to around 70% so it has a harder edge.
