The Great Rebranding of MOOCs

The Great Rebranding of MOOCs | Моя проба | Scoop.it

These arguments miss the point of the MOOC, and that point is, precisely, to make education available to people who cannot afford pay the cost to travel to and attend these small in-person events. Having one instructor for 20-50 people is expensive, and most of the world cannot afford that cost. That's *why* the institutions - from which the attendees of this conference were uniquely selected - charge thousands of dollars of tuition every year.

"MOOCs were not designed to serve the missions of the elite colleges and universities. They were designed to undermine them, and make those missions obsolete. Yes there has been a great rebranding and co-option of the concept of the MOOC over the last couple of years. The near-instant response from the elites, almost unprecedented in my experience, is a recognition of the deeply subversive intent and design of the original MOOCs (which they would like very much to erase from history)."

A Teacher's Guide to Long Distance Tutoring | Edudemic

A Teacher's Guide to Long Distance Tutoring | Edudemic | Моя проба | Scoop.it
There are only so many hours in a school day — and for some students, it’s just not enough. Whether they’re preparing for standardized testing or trying to catch up to their grade level, students today often need help outside of traditional classroom hours. In many cases, staying after school for tutoring sessions just isn’t an option, which results in vulnerable students getting left even further behind.

Luckily, new distance learning technologies are changing that. Now, teachers can connect with students virtually using a bevy of virtual tutoring tools. For example, teachers can use the software application Skype to connect with students via video for online tutoring sessions. In addition, more advanced tools like Scribblar are tailored specifically for distance tutoring and include helpful features like online quizzes and a virtual “whiteboard,” which makes distance learning feel very similar to the real thing. The result? Students get the extra help they desperately need without having to leave home, while many teachers can help students further succeed while perhaps enjoying another revenue stream.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy -

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | Моя проба | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

The Padagogy Wheel, though, is not rocket science. It is an everyday device that can be readily used by everyday teachers; it can be applied to everything from curriculum planning and development, to writing learning objectives and designing centered activities. The idea is for the users to respond to the challenges that the Wheel presents for their teaching practices, and to ask themselves the tough questions about their choices and methods.

That’s right; it’s a computer just like your desktop or laptop, as well as your mobile phone. You get screen size and portability all in one, and that is exactly what you need in a learning tool.

With its convenience and power all in one package, you should make the most of it as a learning tool right now and download some apps that will help you expand your understanding of the world and become a more complete human being, as well as help others do the same.

Caroline Tanner's curator insight, April 1, 3:04 AM
