Learning can happen anytime, anywhere, with those around us serving as invaluable sources of inspiration, experience, and knowledge. What if young people designed their own learning?

What if young people designed their own learning? | Tools, Tech and education | Scoop.it
Across Australia some of these ideas are being put into practice. Some schools have dropped the notion of year levels to enable them to meet children at their point of need and acknowledge that not all students learn at the same pace.

Computer programs are enabling instruction tailored to the student by assessing where they are at and providing a tailored curriculum.

Capabilities , such as personal and social capability and critical and creative thinking, are being embedded in the curriculum. Work is under way to develop assessment measures. Teachers across Australia are working on developing new models of practice to support this approach.

We need to accelerate the change. We are wasting too much of students’ learning time and are failing to amplify their talents. To continue along the current path is increasingly unscientific, unjustifiable and plain dull.

The Surprising Research About Students and Listening Skills - A.J. JULIANI

The Surprising Research About Students and Listening Skills - A.J. JULIANI | Tools, Tech and education | Scoop.it
“ Often in our schools and classrooms, we ask students to “look here” or “listen up” in order to learn. It’s not always (thank goodness) looking and listening to a teacher. It could be looking at a video, listening to a classmate, looking at a picture, or listening to a book read out loud. In fact, much of the learning we do in school is based on the encoding processes of looking and listening. Although our five senses all play a role in learning, these two are some of the most important (and most used) inside of schools. Yet as a teacher, I can’t count how many times the bell would ring and I would be left wondering if my students heard anything in that particular class. When I reflect on my own learning, I see this as well. There are many times I am “present” in a learning situation, only to find that I had a different experience than a peer sitting right next to me. Sometimes this happens as my wife and I watch a movie. I’ll see something that she didn’t catch, or she’ll hear a conversation that I missed.”

To Become a More Visionary Leader, Become Stronger at Visualization

In our research with thousands of leaders, one skill stands out — by far — as the most common improvement area: their ability to sell a vision to employees. Over 50 percent of leaders we’ve assessed struggle to demonstrate this form of visionary leadership, a larger deficiency percentage than for any other leadership skill. Leaders are consistently unable to vividly paint a compelling picture of the future in a way that inspires others to follow them along a challenging route toward a new business reality. This is an improvement area for most leaders because it requires them to synthesize and clarify ambiguous, complex business concepts into a clear path forward.

Lacey Mack's curator insight, June 2, 6:31 AM
Not only do we lead the students to achieve, but we want to educate them to become the leaders.  Ensuring they are able to achieve this, we need to learn the skills to develop their capability and confidence in this area.

Maker Education and Social-Emotional Development - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein #makered | Tools, Tech and education | Scoop.it

"Maker education, when planned around skills acquisition, can enhance social-emotional development.

Self-Awareness: Making in all its forms requires a full range of skills including cognitive, physical, and affective skills. Given this need for multiple and diverse skill set, effective and successful making comes from an accurate assessment of one’s strengths and limitations as well as having optimism and confidence that challenges can be overcome within the making process. Example questions related to self-awareness and making include:

     * What strategies am I using to increase my awareness of my emotions and how they influence my performance during the making-related tasks?

     * What are my strengths given this particular making task?

     * What are my limitations and how can I use my strengths to overcome them? ..."

While the piece focuses on maker education in the school classroom it's also applicable to higher education. The areas of social-emotional development highlighted here resonate with the ones we've seen students identify in their reflective blogs when we run our Doctor as Digital Teacher SSC where they design and develop a digital learning resource.
