Discrimination of Jews Through the Media

Davion Carter's insight:
Davion Carter's insight:

This primary document is probably one of the most offensive ones that I have found and I'm not Jewish. This book was written just to build more hate toward the Jews. It was written to break their spirits even more than they already were. It contained jokes that pretained to the way Jews looked, dressed, and made a living.

Muslim hotel owner discriminated against Jewish group, jury finds

Muslim hotel owner discriminated against Jewish group, jury finds | WW2: Discrimination Of Jews in the United States | Scoop.it
A Muslim hotel owner in Southern California discriminated against a group of Jewish Los Angeles young adults, a jury found.
Davion Carter's insight:

This story is very drastic and very similar to the treatment of many minorities who mount up in the United States. This hotel owner barged in on a private pool party that was hosted by the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. They were Jewish people. The hotel owner said "Get these Jews out of my pool". Unlike the cases of discrimination during the war, the Jews were able to defend themselves.

United States Policy Toward Jewish Refugees, 1941–1952

United States Policy Toward Jewish Refugees, 1941–1952 | WW2: Discrimination Of Jews in the United States | Scoop.it
Davion Carter's insight:

During the war Jews were treated awfully. FDR didn’t really want to do anything about the discrimination of Jews. Jewish leaders pressured him before he did anything to help Jews, and the only ones he helped were the liberated one, not the Nazi-Germany refugees. Jews were blamed for the treatment they received. They were looked at as greedy and liars who made up the holocaust to somehow better themselves.

Website #1: History of antisemitism in the United States

History of antisemitism in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Historians have long debated the extent of antisemitism in America's past and contrasted American antisemitism with its European counterpart. Earlier students of American Jewish life minimized the presence of antisemitism in the United States, which they viewed as a late and alien phenomenon on the American scene arising in the late 19th century.

Davion Carter's insight:

In this site I learned a lot about the discrimination of Jews in the U.S. Jews are used as the scapegoats during hard times in the U.S. During The Great Depression many Jews were commercial bankers. After the banks crashed, people claimed that Jews were “greedy”, “disloyal”, and “greedy

Davion Carter

The topic that I chose to cover was discrimination of Jews in the United States during World War two. I first picked this topic because there is so much you can learn about with it. During World War two was the holocaust in Nazi-Germany. If you are unfamiliar with the holocaust, it was the attempt of genocide of Jewish Germans from 1933-1945. Jewish people haven’t had the best reputation in America by this time. Many people saw them as greedy, materialistic, dishonest, and vulgar. Most of the bad blood that formed towards Jews went back to The Great Depression. Many Jews were owners of commercial banks. Once the banks failed, the bankers were blamed. Jewish people were used as scapegoats during the depression.  The media tore Jews down as a unit. Radio shows, Newspapers, etc. would talk down on the Jewish culture and deny that the Holocaust was happening in Germany. Charles Coughlin was a catholic priest who was very anti-Semitic and wanted the entire nation to join him in his voyage of destroying the Jewish culture as one. He hosted a radio show that attracted 5-12 million listeners a day. He also had a newspaper called “Social Justice” that circulated to about 800,000 home sin 1937. He talked about how the Jews were here to murder our countries success. He was taken off the air after the holocaust was proven to be truly happening.

In all honesty I don’t think it changed the way that America operates at all.  We still play the blame game whenever something awful or freighting happens in our country. I do believe that it helped change the culture a bit. Our country is becoming more accepting to different religious beliefs and different kind of people. It is not as frowned upon to believe in your beliefs and publicize how you feel. After the holocaust was ended I believe that many Americans felt very dumb and small as people. Then again, many people were in denial about it because of the ignorance that lived in our country. Many Americans still didn’t want Jewish people to come to America and our government didn’t make it easy for them come here either. Because of this, many survivors of the holocaust moved to Israel.

Davion Carter's insight:

*This isnt the artical I'm writing about, it would let me upload it. It is on the same page if you scroll down*

This primary source was written to recognize the increase of deaths of Jews. It was written in the New York Times On Janurary 9th, 1938. It bring attention to the devastating death and persecutions of Jews not only in the U.S. but also internationally. At the time this document was written there were 6,000,000 victis noted. This did not include those who just disappeared. It noted that more than 15,000 Jews had to leave Germany in that last year because of the New Laws. Their was 25,000 refugees said to be in need. The refugees needed homes, jobs, food, schooling for their children. Many didn't know the langage of the countries they were fleeing to, so communication was very hard obviously.

Primary Document 1: Anti-Semitic Political Cartoon

"History repeats itself"

Davion Carter's insight:

This primary source took Anitsemitism to the very next level of wrong. The title of this political cartoon "History Repeats Itself". Uncle Sam is being hung and crucified like Jesus Christ was. It has a man with a distorted nose that represents the belief of Jews appearences and he is labled "Wall St. Pirate". To me this is in relation to the way many Jews were blamed for The Great Discrimination due to the fact that many Jews were commerial bankers. Their is a picture in the top left of the drawing that has a man hanging from a tree and the caption is "what Judas 'ought to do". Their is two man on the sides of the Crucified Uncle Sam that are emptying his pockets. It seems as if they referring to the belief that Jews were greedy. Under the cross is a bucket that is labled "debt" which I think represents that Jews are putting the U.S. in deeper debt than ever.

The I-Team has learned a major Jewish group is now calling for an investigation into the teaching practices at one of Boston's top universities.
Davion Carter's insight:

Even though World War Two was many years ago Antisemitism still exsist sadly. During the war Jews were discriminated against, taken from their homes, and set up to basically prove their loyalty to the United States. This story in a sad way proves that it still exsist. Teachers from other countries are disctiminating against Jewish students because of the anitsemitism during the War.

Website #2: Antisemitism in the US during the Holocaust

Davion Carter's insight:

Americans used Jews as scapegoats for the economic downfall of the U.S. The discrimination wasn’t always broad and put out there. Most of the time the discrimination of Jews was “low-key” or passive. People had harsh feelings of Jews but they never really physically hurt them.
