This is an interesting idea to use in the classroom. It would motivate students to improve their skills to achieve these badges. I would suggest implementing these with some incentive system so that students pursue these badges instead of earning them passively as useless labels. These badges can be useful to track progress of historical thinking skills.

Should Schools Still Teach Cursive? | MindShift | Writing Tools Web 3.0 | Scoop.it
The decline in teaching cursive handwriting, the rise of the keyboard, and the introduction of the Common Core State Standards that do not require children to know cursive all question its relevance.
Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Is cursive dead?  I love this aspect of writing, and believe it has some brain cross over effects for students with learning differences.  However digital writing is also wonderful for students who need spell check, and all the other amazing technology one can find on a computer using Word or apps found on an iPad.  Tough choice for many homeschooling families as the computer replaces paper?

Edutopia - Redefining the Writing Process with iPads

Edutopia - Redefining the Writing Process with iPads | Writing Tools Web 3.0 | Scoop.it

"Take a moment to think about how you learned to write. What steps did you go through? What was your process?

Most of us learned the same core set of skills on paper: organize, draft, edit, revise, turn in. Our teachers then marked up what we had handwritten or typed, and returned our writing. From there, maybe it ended up tacked to a bulletin board, stuck on the refrigerator door, stuffed into a notebook, or tossed in the nearest trash can. Let's call this Writing 1.0."
