The death of the letter for digitally-savvy teenagers? - The Media Octopus

The death of the letter for digitally-savvy teenagers? - The Media Octopus | Writing Tools Web 3.0 | Scoop.it
Is the letter dying out as a result of our technology-immersed lives, living in a culture where digital drives everything? This survey suggests so. (Is the letter dying out in today's #digital #technology immersed world?

Marisol Espinoza's curator insight, February 21, 2016 8:45 PM

The title of this article sparked my interest right away. The death of the letter for digitally-savvy teenagers was so interesting to read about. I actually have written a couple of personal letters for my friends birthdays and family Christmas cards, but truly the last time I sent a letter out was probably my freshman year of high school. It's so crazy how no one writes letters anymore all we do is send a text or email in seconds. I actually get very excited when I get a letter. Being so into technology makes you forget all the things people had to do before it all, including sending letters in order to communicate. But for this article I wouldn't consider "the death of letters are a result of technology", I believe people just don't have the patience or even how to write a letter to others. I for sure now will start writing letters more just for fun and see what happens.

Blogging in the 21st-Century Classroom

Blogging in the 21st-Century Classroom | Writing Tools Web 3.0 | Scoop.it

This year, I admitted a hard truth to myself. I wasn't having my students write enough. In an attempt to follow Kelly Gallagher’s advice that students should write more than we can assess, I decided to have them blog weekly.

One Assignment, Many Objectives

After giving students some practice and solidifying my ideas by talking to a colleague and past student, I developed this assignment. I tried to ensure that the assignment would:

Address multiple Common Core standardsHold students accountable while minimizing stressBe structured enough to provide clarity while giving freedom to experimentBe varied enough to keep students engagedGet students to write for multiple purposes

I love blogging and getting my students blogging too!  I have seen their writing flourish,  when they realise they are writing for a larger audience!  Their sense of humour, style and unique opinion comes to the fore!  Blogs are a wonderful way for young people to share their worldview!
