31 August marks Malaysia's Independence or Hari Merdeka. On this day in 1957, the first flag raising ceremony was held at Stadium Merdeka. Merdeka Day is a day which we remember how our ancestors fought for our freedom. They struggled bravely for us to live freely. 57 years on, some of us just look at it as just another holiday. We think it is just a day for parades. It is more than that. Younger generations must cherish this freedom and protect it. On 31st August, every Malaysian should stand tall and be grateful that we are merdeka.
The tragedy of MH17 shocked the world on 17 July 2014. Today, MH17 has returned home. Flight MH17 was real. Its passengers and crew were real. The pain we feel for their loss is also real. More than a few tears were shed at KLIA today as the coffins and urns were removed from the belly of the Boeing 747 that brought them home. But there is no denying that, whether or not tears fell, the rest of the nation cried for them, too.
