Literature Still Urgently Needs More Non-White, Non-Male Heroes | Writing and Storytelling Through Life | Scoop.it
If privileged writers keep "writing what they know," marginalized people groups will continue to feel—and be—marginalized.

What Needs to Change About the Current State of Blogging

What Needs to Change About the Current State of Blogging | Writing and Storytelling Through Life | Scoop.it
Is this current writing model of leaning on gif-listicles, quizzes, and Instagram photos as the bulk of blogging content the most sustainable in the long-term?

Via Ally Greer
Debbie Elicksen 's insight:

What a great point. Let's have something interesting and valuable to share -- even if it's just an entertaining meme -- rather than post shit for the sake of posting it.

Ally Greer's curator insight, March 18, 2014 11:48 PM

Are you blogging just to have things to publish on social media, or because you have important things to share with your readers?

If it's the former, you might want to rethink your strategy. Blogging just for the sake of blogging can get ugly pretty quickly - making viral headlines and "keywordifying" your content just to get some SEO and social media visibility isn't the way to form real relationships and get business.

Instead of blogging just to blog, why not blog when you have meaningful, important ideas that matter to share, and supplement the rest with curated content?

The Publishing Contract

A publishing deal is never official until it is in writing. It is all right for an author and publisher to negotiate a publishing contract.
Debbie Elicksen 's insight:

Sometimes a publisher will accept a book proposal and spend hours discussing it with you on the telephone. I’ve experienced this twice. But when it came time to send out the actual publishing contract, after days of no communication, you then learn they changed their mind for whatever reason.

Chipotle writers' lineup lacks Mexican, Mexican-American, or Latin American authors

Chipotle writers' lineup lacks Mexican, Mexican-American, or Latin American authors | Writing and Storytelling Through Life | Scoop.it
The omission has angered many, with writer Gustavo Arellano criticizing the decision and a California Mexican restaurant offering blank cups and pens so customers can pen their own stories.
Debbie Elicksen 's insight:

Seriously, take a look at the statistics. Considering there are three states with 50% or higher Latino populations, and a considerable amount of Spanish-speaking individuals in every other state and many other countries, we should all be considering translating our work into Spanish -- thus hiring Spanish-speaking writers.

Personally I call them differently as content "management" and "curation"; as though with management we haven´t the added value of the personal point of view of the curator, still it is a great job to find and select good, quality content.
