La Balade Des Gnomes - Belgium's Trojan Horse Hotel | Oddity Central - Collecting Oddities

La Balade Des Gnomes - Belgium's Trojan Horse Hotel | Oddity Central - Collecting Oddities | "World Travel" info 世界旅行の情報 | Scoop.it

If you’re looking to take a break from your everyday life and retreat in a fairytale world, there’s probably no better place than La Balade des Gnomes, near the picturesque town of Durbuy, Belgium. Featuring ten amazingly-decorated bedrooms and a special suite designed as a Trojan cow, this place is certainly unique.

Formerly an ordinary Belgian farmhouse, La Balade des Gnomes was transformed into a magical tourist resort by architect owner Dominic Noel. Inspired by fantasy settings, ancient Greek history, science fiction and medieval castles, the resourceful Mr. Noel managed to create his incredible hotel exclusively out of natural materials like wood, stone and cob (mud mixed with lime and straw). “The hotel was created by people who have a strong interest in nature,” the owner says, but anyone with a rich imagination would certainly appreciate the unworldly design and decorations of this place. The names of the rooms do a good job of describing what you can expect to see when you walk through the door: The Legend of Trolls seems taken straight out of the Lord of the Rings, In a Moon Neighborhood takes you to a distant future where humans can spend their vacation in a hotel on the Moon, while Macquarie Island boasts a marine decor complete with a boat-shaped bed.

10 Best Places to Live for Escaping World Conflict | Expatify

10 Best Places to Live for Escaping World Conflict | Expatify | "World Travel" info 世界旅行の情報 | Scoop.it

Where would you be the safest if World War 3 broke out tomorrow? Perhaps it’s a grim subject, but safety and distance from world conflict can be a motivating factor in your choice to expatriate. At the very least, conflict around the world can weigh heavy on the soul, and it’s nice to know there are some places still left in the world where you might be left in peace. Thus, we’ve assembled a list of the 10 best places to live if you want to escape world conflict.

10. Switzerland

Switzerland’s long history of neutrality and its tucked away location among the valleys of the Alps still make it a safe bet, even despite having a high number of bordering nations. It helps that neighboring Austria is also considered a neutral nation.

9. Costa Rica

Costa Rica has a stable democracy, a disbanded military and a national policy of neutrality. It also ranks highly on the Global Peace Index, Happy Planet Index, and Life Satisfaction Index. Although it sits in the middle of a tumultuous region, there are far worse places to sit in peace as the world goes down in flames all around.

8. Papua New Guinea

There are regions of Papua New Guinea that are still being discovered for the first time. The canopy covered, mountainous nation contains some of the most isolated places in the world. Tuck yourself away in a nook here and it may be one of the few places left where you can completely insulate yourself from the outside world.

7. Canada

Canada is the second largest nation in the world, yet it only shares a land border with one other country– the U.S.A.– and it is a peaceful border. That means there is a great expanse to escape to, if need be. Furthermore, Canada has few world enemies, ranks consistently high on the Global Peace Index, and is relatively homogeneous.

6. Seychelles

Aside from being safely isolated from the rest of the world in the middle of the Indian Ocean, this beautiful island nation is a great place to forget about your worries. Isolation is the key here. And conflict is as transparent as the water.

5. Finland

Finland has a long history of desiring to stay out of international conflicts, is recognized as neutral and always ranks in the top 10 of the Global Peace Index. It’s northerly location also typically means the remote areas of this country are a perfect place to disappear.

4. Tuvalu

Isolated in the middle of Micronesia, Tuvalu is among the safest and most remote places in the world. It is the third least populated country on Earth, and the forth smallest. There are only a few places more distant from the world’s strife than Tuvalu.

3. Iceland

Iceland, of course, has no borders, has remote locations, is stable as a country and has virtually no world enemies. Its people are happy and the nation always ranks highly on the Global Peace Index. If world conflict erupts, Iceland is one of the few stable nations in the world unlikely to get caught up in the middle.

2. Bhutan

Landlocked among the Himalaya mountains, Bhutan is one of the most isolated nations in the world. It also showcases one of the most stable balances in the world between moderization and retention of ancient culture. Its religious population believes in peaceful resolution to all conflict, and although it sits in a troubled region, it remains protected by its geography.

1. New Zealand

New Zealand might be the most isolated and expansive fully developed nation in the world. It shares no borders, sits relatively distant from any other nation, has no real national enemies, has a safe democracy and a diverse landscape with many remote places to hide away within. Furthermore, it ranked #1 on the Global Peace Index in 2009.

Ryanair will launch services from Charleroi in Belgium to the Montenegrin capital starting June 20

Ryanair will launch services from Charleroi in Belgium to the Montenegrin capital starting June 20 | "World Travel" info 世界旅行の情報 | Scoop.it

Europe’s largest low cost airline, Ryanair, will launch services from Charleroi in Belgium to the Montenegrin capital starting June 20. Maria Macken, Ryanair’s Sales and Marketing Manager for the UK, Ireland and Cyprus, announced the new service this afternoon at a press conference in Budva. The Ryanair flights will operate twice per week, every Monday and Thursday. Tickets are to go on sale tomorrow on the airline’s website. Montenegro marks Ryanair’s 29th country of operation. Speaking at the conference Ms. Macken said, “This year we are introducing only one service due to capacity restrictions. However, from next year we plan to introduce flights from London, Barcelona, Stockholm and Milan to Tivat”. The initial service from Podgorica is set to operate throughout the year, with Ryanair planning to handle some 10.000 passengers on the route in its first year.

Ryanair originally made plans to launch services to Montenegro last summer. In March 2012, the Montenegrin government said it had negotiated with Ryanair to launch flights to Podgorica from three cities in June. However, the announcement was followed by an angry reaction from the low cost airline, unhappy that details of the agreement were made public. It then decided not to sign the agreement with the Montenegrin government citing expensive fees at Podgorica Airport as its main motive for staying away. Tour operators blamed the government, claiming it purposely sabotaged the negotiating process to protect Montenegro Airlines.

However, in January this year the government launched fresh talks with Ryanair, saying it had made it its main priority to bring low cost carriers to the country. Despite its economy heavily relying on tourism, Montenegro is currently not served by a single low cost airline. Within the former Yugoslavia, Ryanair only operates services to Croatia. Earlier this month it opened its first base in the country, in Zadar.

Hotels Near Brussels Train Stations

While Belgium might be a relatively small country which traditionally has not been seen as an economic powerhouse by the rest of Europe, its capital Brussels has become in recent years one of the most important political centres in the world. With various European Union headquarters situated here, Brussels could be considered to be the most important city politically in Europe, although this may be a controversial view. It is situated between two very distinct cultures, those of the Romance countries (such as France and Spain) and more Germanic countries to the north, giving it a unique cultural identity. Despite these factors, Brussels has always maintained a strong sense of history, and continues to be one of the most fascinating cities to visit, attracting millions of tourists every year.

Use Simply Hotels to search and compare prices on Hotels Near Brussels Train Station.

Popular Tourist Destinations and Landmarks in Brussels

No trip to Brussels would be complete without a visit to the Grand Place, which is the historical centre of the city and home to some of the most beautiful cities it has to offer. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is the most popular destination for visitors to the city, as it is simply stunning whenever you come to see it. The Town Hall and the Maison du Roi (literally, The King's House) are the two most distinctive landmarks in the square and provide the perfect backdrop for some of the displays that are frequently held here.

Museums and Government Buildings and Shopping in Brussels

Brussels is also home to several excellent museums, particularly focusing on art from Belgium and around the world. The Royal Museum of Art and History is a key museum with several collections exhibiting works and artefacts from various civilizations, while the Belgian Museum of Fine Arts is well worth a visit to the see some of the most important Belgian art ever produced. Since the European Union started locating much of its key buildings in Brussels, many tourists have come to see the important seats of power that are proudly held in the city, although getting to see them properly isn't necessarily easy. The European Parliament is open to visitors, although this depends greatly on the day that you're visiting, while the European Council and European Commission do not offer guided tours, only group presentations. This shouldn't deter you from coming to see these buildings if you have a strong interest in politics, but don't abandon the other amazing sights of Belgium in favour of these relatively modern landmarks. It's also worth visiting some of the fantastic markets throughout the city, while shopping in general is excellent in Brussels, especially if you're looking for something a little different.

Belgian Culture: Eating and Drinking in Brussels

Belgian culture is heavily centred upon food and drink, and it is for this reason that many tourists visit the city of Brussels in the first place. There are hundreds of fantastic restaurants, ranging from world-class fine dining to street vendors selling hot snacks. Whatever you're looking for, and no matter what your budget, Brussels will be able to cater to your every need. Brussels is famous for serving fantastic mussels and also decadent chocolate, both of which are available in abundance at most good restaurants. Belgium is also the Beer capital of the world and attracts many beer lovers due to its huge range of drink. You'll taste beer that's better than anything you've tried before, in pubs that are more homely and welcoming than anything you've ever experienced, so if you're even slightly interested in beer, make some time in your schedule to relax with a few drinks in an authentic Belgian pub.

Travellers with a smaller budget may want to stay in the backpackers and hostels dotted around the city. Most Brussels backpackers and hostels offer all the basic amenities and bed & breakfast.

İstanbul is a remarkable place in many ways, indeed. It was historically the “bridge of civilizations.” Today it is home to over 13 million, the majority of whom are Turks, largely of the Islamic faith, although they live in a society that has secularized significantly since the early 1920s. İstanbul was once the center of the Muslim world, and the Ottoman caliphate existed for over 600 years, longer than any other caliphate.

Presently, the economy of Turkey is performing rather well, and the rise of the “Islamic bourgeoisie” has ensured the vitality of the wider nation, rather than the elite urbanite secularists and liberals who, until recently, traditionally held economic and political power. Many Turks consider themselves part of an extraordinary heritage of Turkishness, with its progressive Islamism at center-stage. Other Turks wish to be Europeanized, and rapidly so with individualism, urbanism and internationalism replacing existing notions of collectivism, traditionalism and localism. These are important sociological developments in a society undergoing dramatic changes in the light of globalization and the opening up of media and politics.

While these advances are important for Turkish society and as someone who has had a lifetime to determine the important questions in relation to identity as a British Pakistani Muslim, living and working here as a foreigner has caused me to revaluate some of my thoughts. Almost every day I am asked the same question by those I meet for the first time. Each time I am asked, I ask myself if I really know the answer. All kinds of İstanbulites ask me, “Where are you from?” and each time they do I have less and less of an idea as to what to say.

I sometimes give a different answer just to prevent the monotony as I have a good idea of what will follow. But the norm is for me to say, “I am from the UK.” They immediately then ask, “Where?” and I say I am from England and they say, “But...” and start to point at my hands, suggesting that I have brown skin. I then say, “My parents are from Pakistan but I am British-born,” and they say, “Ah... you are Pakistani.” I say: “No, I've spent no more than three months in Pakistan over a period of 41 years. I am sometimes treated like a tourist there.” This creates disquiet among the questioners, who do not know how to respond to the idea that I am something of a dislocated Pakistani, perhaps unsure of myself, even.

Smiles are usually exchanged at this point as it becomes clear to both of us that we are not speaking the same language at all. Whether it is the local baker or one of the attendants at my favorite coffee shop in the center of Avcılar, the next thing said is a statement that I am asked to affirm, “So you are Pakistani?” I reply, “Yes, in that I have Pakistani blood, but my heart and mind are quite English.”

Being an 'Englishman'.....
