What Is Digital Marketing?

What Is Digital Marketing? | World's Best Infographics | Scoop.it
What is digital marketing? It’s a pretty expansive question, but let’s try and sum it up... t’s a pretty expansive question, but let’s try and sum it up in a single sentence: digital marketing is the promotion of brands using all forms of digital advertising, which includes, but is not limited to, websites, search engine optimisation, search engine marketing, cost per click advertising and social media. Without digital marketing, it’s almost impossible for any brand to make any kind of impact on the web. And while these tools aren’t difficult to learn per se, they do require time and effort to make them work well and efficiently. Moreover, it’s likely that they will never be mastered, as they’re shifting and evolving all of the time. All you can really do is borrow as much knowledge as you possibly can for this moment… and then keep on learning. The infographic below takes a closer look at digital marketing....

Your 2014 Digital Marketing Roadmap - Marketing Technology Blog

Your 2014 Digital Marketing Roadmap - Marketing Technology Blog | World's Best Infographics | Scoop.it

Sometimes it’s easier to just follow the dotted line as you’re looking to ensure your digital marketing is balanced and complete. This infographic compliments of Two Legit aims to do just that, walking you through your web presence, mobile, ecommerce, outbound, inbound, content and social media marketing initiatives.

One element lost in this infographic is the ability for all of the strategies to work with one another. For instance, utilizing your content marketing to power newsletters that are optimized for mobile devices.

That’s not defined in this infographic but it’s an absolute necessity if you’d like to fully leverage email and ensure your emails are read properly. I’ve written before that the modern digital media consultant is more of a conductor, balancing the volumes of each strategy to make some sweet, sweet music!

More often than not, we find that the key to marketing well isn’t doing everything… it’s balancing a combination of strategies, amplifying the impact by having them work together, and understanding how much of each strategy to initiate in order to maximize results. That said – this is still a great checklist to go down and ensure you’re not missing anything! This infographic also provides some statistics behind the digital marketing trends....

Infographic Reveals Expensive Markups of Everyday Products | World's Best Infographics | Scoop.it

The markup of some items might surprise you. Coupon site Sumocoupon analyzed some consumer data and put together an infographic revealing the markup of 37 products.

The site calculated the data based on information collected from production pricing reports on news sites like CNN and the New York Times. While this isn't the most scientific of methodologies, they're open about their sources and you can check out the data from each report.

More than products, they found that services have the highest markup. This is pretty obvious, but the numbers are a little surprising. For example, interior painting had a markup of 6,329%. Companies charge thousands, but the supplies cost a little over a hundred bucks, according to their data....

The chemical and psychological makeup of our minds affects how we consume content: Our brains are wired to connect with compelling stories.

Brand storytelling tactics focus on different functions of the brain related to understanding and perception. The brain processes images 60 times faster than text, and 92 percent of consumers want brands to create stories around ads. Because of this, marketers should be delivering linear content with clear narratives and using images to tell their stories.

Ghostwriters, Spies, and Content Marketing’s Thought Leadership Problem | The Freelancer, by Contently | World's Best Infographics | Scoop.it

...Now that content marketing has been around long enough for trends to cement, we’re getting close to a thought leadership bubble. Too much of it has become farce. The widespread publishing of ghostwritten posts from marketing leaders will continue to cheapen the impact that comes from the leaders who regularly put in the time and effort to pen their own insightful work. To me, that point seems inarguable.

“Marketers are beginning to get less value out of these posts,” Westervelt added. “Not just because of whatever Google decides to do with guest blogging, but because being one of only a handful of CEOs to contribute a story to Forbes once in a while is a whole lot more valuable than being just one among hundreds and having your post buried within minutes of being published.”

Google, in the spirit of keeping the Internet free of clutter, has echoed this idea by penalizing some guest blogging network in search rankings to prevent readers from accessing spammy content that all sounds the same....

Mid to Small Companies Still Struggle With Social Media

First-hand experience as a digital analyst working with companies of all sizes reveal there is still a great deal of poor execution among mid to small companies when it comes to practicing social media. Strategies, tactics and community management all too often are misaligned to the realities of how best to leverage social media.

Several things to keep in mind to realize ROI.

Don’t Act Impulsively

There is a big difference between understanding the marketplace & knowing when to leap into the latest platform.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

• Is this new network a fad or does it have potential longevity?

• Does the purpose of the network align with our brand and social identity?

• Is our current or potential audience on this network?

• What content and tools do we need to successfully manage on a daily basis?

• Will we see a return on investment / energy if we join this network?

And remember Social media and the strategy applied is no longer just a micro-segment of marketing. Think beyond the basics and take into account your company’s general business objectives, fiscal plans and sales goals, then align your strategy to that agenda. If no metrics currently exist—be proactive!

Establish benchmarks, create metrics, track progress and merchandize appropriately.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

• Do my social goals support greater business goals?

• Are the social strategies and tactics outlined attainable?

• What is our brand voice and how do we adapt that for social?

• What resources, human and technological, do we need to flourish?

• What processes are in place to test, learn and adjust as necessary?

Be smart. Track, analyze and report on results to prove ongoing value and return for the company and ROI will start to become evident if social media is practiced well.
