Muftah » Popular Visual Art in Afghanistan

Muftah » Popular Visual Art in Afghanistan | World of Street & Outdoor Arts | Scoop.it

After Tunisia and Egypt, it was Afghanistan’s turn to be covered in the bold and beautiful colors of graffiti. It all became possible because of one young woman’s unflinching determination. She stood up and vowed to help her country; she is Afghanistan’s first female graffiti artist. Her cry for freedom is an example of the serious changes she wants to see across the Middle East.

But it was not an easy ride for the twenty-four year-old Shamsia Hassani—who highlights injustices against women in conservative Afghan society. Like all graffiti artists, she is no stranger to vitriolic criticism of her work, which highlights injustices against women. More importantly, she is well aware that she could be assaulted at any time for her work.

She became famous for her art in her hometown of Kabul, while living among the sounds of gunshots and bombs.

URBAN FORMS GALLERY 24.08-30.09.2012 LODZ | GRAFFART

URBAN FORMS GALLERY 24.08-30.09.2012 LODZ | GRAFFART | World of Street & Outdoor Arts | Scoop.it

On August 24, Urban Forms Foundation starts its second edition of urban gallery project. For more than a month the most famous street artists from all around the world will paint five large walls in Lodz.
This year the invited guests are: Brasilian duet Os Gemeos, Inti from Chile, Aryz from Spain and two artists from Poland. The five paintings will join the already existing 17 murals. Consequently URBAN FORMS GALLERY will have more than 20 large format pictures painted directly on side elevations of buildings in Lodz city centre.

On August 24, painting of the most important and possibly the most spectacular mural on the world this year will start. The co-authors of this mural are “godfathers” of the mainstream street art, large format painting pillars, one of the main XXI c. artists – Brazilian brothers OS GEMEOS. Their presence in Poland is a world-scale event that will be recorded by the most prominent media that document and present modern arts.

The brothers will paint the mural together with one of the most
interesting artists of a new generation – Spanish painter ARYZ who already painted his solo work in Lodz last year. The fusion of reativity of these three artists on the same wall will result in an
explosive mix and large format picture on a huge wall on 5 Roosevelta St. (around 20 metres from Piotrkowska St.).

The mural will be an opening picture of this year’s edition of Urban Forms Gallery project. It will last from 23 August till the end of September 2012. This year there will be 5 large murals painted by street artists from all over the world. Apart from Brazilian and Spanish artists, a representative from Chile will come to Lodz – Inti, painter who mainly refers to South American folklore, as well as two representatives from Poland: OTECKI, graduate at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw and LUMP, graduate in Multimedia Communication at the University of Arts in Poznan. The five paintings will join the already existing 17 murals. Consequently URBAN FORMS GALLERY will have more than 20 large format pictures painted directly on side elevations of buildings in Lodz city centre.

The fundamental idea of this project is to create a permanent exhibition of street art in the public space in the city centre of Lodz. The exhibition, in majority, will be composed of large format pictures painted directly on side elevations of tenement houses in the city centre of Lodz. They will be created by the prominent representatives of large format painting from all around the world. In the upcoming years the project will expand with other street art objects like sculpture, installation, street jewellery etc. During a couple of years there will the urban gallery created that will include several dozen of exhibits ready to see and visit in a few hours on foot.

"Libertad De Prensa" mural by Escif

"Libertad De Prensa" mural by Escif | World of Street & Outdoor Arts | Scoop.it

Escif’s newest mural in his hometown of Valencia, Spain depicts a human being crushed by a large vice. Entitled “Libertad De Prensa” which translates in English to “Freedom of the Press”, is a comment on a local radio broadcast that was removed from Spanish radio. Escif wrote on the topic, “Carne Cruda” radio broadcast has been removed from Spanish Public Radio (RNE 3). We all imagined that this moment will arrive soon. With this new government, there was no space for free press. For all the good times I’ve been listening to this broadcast and all the inspiration it has brought to my work…. today is a sad day. “

Ale and arty unhealthy for our street scene

Ale and arty unhealthy for our street scene | World of Street & Outdoor Arts | Scoop.it

MELBOURNE'S street art is going mainstream, but artists are still being asked to work for cans of beer, says an elder statesman of the scene.

At 34, Adrian Doyle of Blender Studios has watched what's painted on our laneway walls develop from New York-influenced tags and vandalism into a major tourist drawcard.

Influential tourism magazine Travel +Leisure has just told its 4.8 million readers that Melbourne is one of the world's top places to see street art, and travel website TripAdvisor lets tourists rate the best known site, Hosier Lane, just like any commercial operation (it gets 4½ stars).

Tourism Victoria's Visit Melbourne YouTube channel includes clips about street art with an enthusiastic English-accented voiceover, aimed at attracting UK tourists, alongside more conventional videos of penguins and surf lessons.

Ten years ago, when Doyle set up Blender, Melbourne's street art was derivative, he says; then street artists and fine artists began to work together, developing new styles.

Apart from 2004, when "we had the Commonwealth Games [clean-up], which wasn't good for street art", Melbourne's spray-painted lanes have become the site of one of Australia's largest art movements, Doyle says. "It's making people care about art for the first time in ages. It's about bringing art to the people."

Street art by Sydney’s Apeseven — Lost At E Minor: For creative people | World of Street & Outdoor Arts | Scoop.it

I’ve only just come across Apeseven, who has taken part in the Sidewayz show in Sydney raising money for the Voice charity. He grew up in the 1980′s Sydney skateboard scene. Spending most of his time exploring industrial areas and listening to hip hop, he lived on a healthy dose of anime, skateboard art and graffiti. Apeseven predominantly approaches work with a street art perspective, utilizing stencil, freehand aerosol, and traditional brush techniques...

Another piece from the Interesni Kazki team that transports you to another time and space. AEC from the Ukrainian duo was in Grottaglie, Italy to paint this wall/building for Fame Festival 2012, but from the sound of it, this was a stressful piece. Punctured tires of the lift, stuck in the mud, and then, it didn't work. Lifts are stressful.
