The Cost of 4K: From Acquisition to Archiving. By Juliet McNally, AbelCine

The Cost of 4K: From Acquisition to Archiving. By Juliet McNally, AbelCine | world of Photo and vidéo | Scoop.it

Posted by Juliet McNally on May 21, 2013 •

"4K was the definitive buzzword at NAB this year, as well as CES, with a number of manufacturers releasing 4K televisions, 4K game systems, and 4K cameras. With the consumer demand for 4K content just around the corner, one of the most often asked questions is “How much is this gonna cost us?!” After polling a number of industry sources, I decided to try and break down the costs of shooting, color correcting, and finishing in 4K to show that it isn’t as intimidating as you might think.

Let’s use a typical multi-camera one-hour television drama (such as Game of Thrones) shooting six hours of footage per day with nine cameras. And let’s assume that everything is shot in ProRes 4444 at 24fps, just to make it a little easier to get some figures. Additionally, let’s say they’re using a camera that can shoot both formats, so the production equipment is the same, but the amount of media and storage will differ. This isn’t a magical camera, by the way, there are plenty of cameras that offer 4K and 1080 recording options in the same codec, as well as external recorders like AJA’s Ki Pro Quad or the new Odyssey 7Q from Convergent Design."

The Open-Source Cross-Platform Video Editor: Shotcut

The Open-Source Cross-Platform Video Editor: Shotcut | world of Photo and vidéo | Scoop.it
Dean Mantz's curator insight, May 7, 11:02 AM

Ever since I came across Robin's Scoop.it site I have found some top knotch resources.  When educators are looking to integrate video projects into their curriculum, one must consider what time may be needed outside of class to complete the work.  Well, here is one video option that works on multiple platforms.  Thus, enabling students to work on projects at home as well as school.

173 Sud's curator insight, May 7, 11:12 AM

MakeUseOf :: Adobe Premiere. Final Cut Pro. Sony Vegas. AVID. All of these are high-end video editors that all have one attribute in common: they cost money. In an ideal world, there would be an equally high-end freeware video editing system out there. Unfortunately, most of the “editors” that do make these claims are embarrassingly poor and of little to no use.

However,  Shotcut may be a shining star in the world of free video editors. It’s an open-source, cross-platform editing system that is incredibly intricate, and it’s loaded with an arsenal of features so hot that they will melt your face off. More appropriately, Shotcut is a freeware video toolkit that is actually useful and won’t hold you back.

Shotcut offers basic cutting and trimming capabilities along with a zillion different codecs available for export. For the record, these are professional-level file formats, and you could even use Shotcut as a higher-end file converter from time to time, if needed. Also included is the ability to perform basic color correction with a three-wheel user interface, an eyedropper tool for post-production white balancing, and a few filters to choose from.

On the input side of things, Shotcut can receive footage via SDI, HDMI, and more. Timecode is supported, and the app will typically allow for native editing. Simply put, Shotcut is a fantastic piece of software to keep in your editing suite. I wouldn’t recommend it as your go-to editor, but it definitely has a place in the video production world.

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, May 12, 12:13 PM

To install, simply extract the archive and run it. You can drag the Shotcut folder (app icon for OS X) to copy and move it wherever you want.

Ariston Anderson:  "As a filmmaker, Loach has adopted a working style not unlike that of the characters seen in his films. Unlike the traditional Hollywood model, he’s not driven by his own race to the top, but rather by a collective spirit, a desire to create harmony on the set and to appreciate his crew for a job well done."

Canon develops high sensitivity full-frame CMOS sensor for video

Canon develops high sensitivity full-frame CMOS sensor for video | world of Photo and vidéo | Scoop.it

Canon has developed a 35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor designed for low-light video capture. The 16:9 sensor features a 1920x1080 pixel array, meaning each pixel measures a huge 19 microns along each edge - 7.5 times larger than the ones in the EOS-1D X. The large pixels and low readout-noise circuitry allow the sensor to capture light around 10 times less bright than current CCDs used for astronomy. The sensor will first be shown in public at a security show in Japan. Other applications the company is looking into are astronomy and medical research.

"No question, today's Sony press conference was all about the 4K. TVs, media services and even 4K recording for consumers. The latter arrived in the form of a couple of prototypes. First off was the generically labelled 4K Consumer Camcorder, a prototype device that was hanging out in a glass case at the Sony booth after the event concluded -- though there was a Handycam logo on the side of the device. It's not a bad looking handheld -- about a standard size for a prosumer model, with a viewfinder, mic and handle at the top. As for specs? No such luck at this early stage."
