YouTube to Acquire Videogame-Streaming Service Twitch for $1 Billion

YouTube to Acquire Videogame-Streaming Service Twitch for $1 Billion | World of Games | Scoop.it

"Google’s YouTube has reached a deal to buy Twitch, a popular videogame-streaming company, for more than $1 billion, according to sources familiar with the pact.

The deal, in an all-cash offer, is expected to be announced imminently, sources said. If completed the acquisition would be the most significant in the history of YouTube, which Google acquired in 2006 for $1.65 billion. The impending acquisition comes after longtime Google ad exec Susan Wojcicki was named CEO of YouTube earlier this year."

A short history of game panics

A short history of game panics | World of Games | Scoop.it

From pinball to porn to online poker.

For decades moral guardians have warned us about the alleged evils of video games. They make people violent. They make people gamble. They're too addictive, too hypnotic, too bloody, too risque. If they aren't leading kids to drugs or delinquency, they're turning them into school shooters. And they might even make you fat.

Here are some highlights from the history of game-driven moral panics.

The Xbox One price drop isn't just to boost sales, says Microsoft

The Xbox One price drop isn't just to boost sales, says Microsoft | World of Games | Scoop.it

This morning, less than a year after Microsoft unveiled its Xbox One, the game console's price dropped from $500 to $400. How's Microsoft making up for the price difference? By removing Kinect, of course.

Nicko Gibson's insight:

There are so many attractive alternatives now for gaming. Oculus RIft and Virtuix omni, both in that price range or cheaper. Heck, a gaming computer is in that range as well. For that reason a console is far down the list of next gadgets for me.

VR/AR What's better? Being in a virtual world or layering digital over real world? Comments - GameInformer

VR/AR What's better? Being in a virtual world or layering digital over real world? Comments - GameInformer | World of Games | Scoop.it
Would you rather have a virtual world created around you? Or see the world around you change?

Via Gary Hayes
more...
Gary Hayes's curator insight, March 31, 11:10 PM

Quote "

Virtual reality isn't widely available yet, but Oculus Rift test kits are in the hands of many, and interesting experiences are already being crafted.

Which technology has you more excited? Microsoft's IllumiRoom technology looks very cool, and doesn't require glasses, but it's hard to imagine that it will be more immersive than virtual reality hardware. Also, Microsoft may be working on a form of augmented reality gaming that requires headgear, anyway. I have my personal misgivings about virtual reality headsets, but you can't deny how quickly it pulls you into a virtual world.

Is there one technology you will be quicker to embrace over the other? Or are you happy with your interactive digital experiences the way they are?"

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, April 26, 8:33 PM

The answer to this question if you're going to place bets is the answer to: which environment better facilitates fundamental human goals like social connection, identity and self-efficacy, virtual worlds or layering digital over the real world?
