VR/AR What's better? Being in a virtual world or layering digital over real world? Comments - GameInformer

VR/AR What's better? Being in a virtual world or layering digital over real world? Comments - GameInformer | World of Games | Scoop.it

Quote "

Virtual reality isn't widely available yet, but Oculus Rift test kits are in the hands of many, and interesting experiences are already being crafted.

Which technology has you more excited? Microsoft's IllumiRoom technology looks very cool, and doesn't require glasses, but it's hard to imagine that it will be more immersive than virtual reality hardware. Also, Microsoft may be working on a form of augmented reality gaming that requires headgear, anyway. I have my personal misgivings about virtual reality headsets, but you can't deny how quickly it pulls you into a virtual world.

Is there one technology you will be quicker to embrace over the other? Or are you happy with your interactive digital experiences the way they are?"

You’ve heard of About.me for profile pages. Well, there are plenty of gaming communities out there, but Player.me hopes to be the “about.me for gamers”. Obviously Playfire is a pretty big competitor but it would appear Player.me is trying to create a more open network that links to social more broadly.

The new privately funded gaming social platform launches in private beta today to give gamers and
games a one page online profile and centralized feed of updates.

New MMOs Lack Something - Interdependence?

Something is lacking in newer mmos. Maybe it's the focus on graphics and gameplay being streamlined for a casual gamer audience?

Or the character development being easier now compared to the huge grinds of the past? And classes becoming less dependent as they each have dozens of skills, including heals?

Newer mmos focus on making it easier to just play the game, and not have to figure out all the rpg/game mechanics in order to survive.

"In older MMO's you could not craft or gather everything, you needed trades...

...You felt important in the world, unique. You had something to offer other than some virtual armor rating telling you that you were good to go for some raid, or a generic cookie cutter tank spec

" -Viper482 (http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/400699/page/1 ;)

There are some exeptions. Some of these 'newer' trends were around already back in eary 2000s
