Bionic Hand Allows Amputee to Feels in Real-time

Bionic Hand Allows Amputee to Feels in Real-time | world news | Scoop.it
“ Revolutionary bionic technology with sensory feedback allows amputee to feel shape and texture of objects with prosthetic hand.”
Via Disabled World
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
This prosthetic hand has the ability to give sense of motion, texture, temperature and any sense at all to the body. I think this is very cool because it will give people a chance to regain what they have lost. Some people might not want it, but others might jump at the opportunity. Obviously it has some improvement to gain, but in the future, it could completely change everything! Maybe this could lead to glasses that can make a blind man see, or even much more like being able to save people with prosthetic hearts and organs!

iWatch is set to watch over your health

iWatch is set to watch over your health | world news | Scoop.it
“ It is believed the watch will be able to monitor both exercise and sleep, letting wearers track and analyse their every movement.”
Via Olivia Maloney
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
The new I watch could monitor your sleep and health. You can still have apps and calendars as you would on your phone, but it would have multiple health monitors and other special apps that can help you with your exercise and eating habits. Also you might be able to make phone calls and get other alerts. This would be very cool and a much bigger investment than a new iPhone

Mackenzie Johnston's insight:

Guess what? The foods that you might think are good enough for you are actually packed with fat and fake sugar! Foods like turkey burgers and fake butter, and also artichoke dip and cereal bars. Also sushi rolls and trail mix. If you think that sports drinks are good for you, think again!  Many more foods are like this of course, but open your eyes up to healthier options and you would be surprised!

One killed and two injured on board Army helicopter in Georgia

One killed and two injured on board Army helicopter in Georgia | world news | Scoop.it
“ A member of an elite Army helicopter unit was killed and two crew members were injured when their helicopter crashed at a Georgia base last night.”
Via vee pointer
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
A member of an elite Army helicopter unit was killed and two crew members were injured when their helicopter crashed at a Georgia base last night. The crew of the MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter were returning from a routine training flight when they made a 'hard landing' at the Hunter Airfield in Savannah at about 11.30pm. The three-man team on board were part of the elite Night Stalkers regiment, which trains pilots to fly dangerous nighttime missions, including the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. There have been many plane crashes in which many have been killed and injured. Now the helicopter crash that also had a death and two injuries. I am guessing the rates of the amount of crashes are going way up, bringing the trust of airlines and other companies down. Even though this was an army helicopter, it still means that there needs to be more safety implications

Via Kalani Kirk Hausman
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
This new metal thumb thing gives more ability for thumb to move. They can begin testing it to see if it could work for robots and prosthetics in the future. It showed slight response, so it has a chance of working.

Organic chicken carries just as many superbugs as conventional.

Organic chicken carries just as many superbugs as conventional. | world news | Scoop.it
“And no one can figure out why.”
Via Bill Palladino - MLUI
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
Apparently, organic chicken contains just as many bugs as non organic chicken. It has just as much potential and tests have proven that it contains the bacteria that other chicken contains too. It costs so much more though, so why are we paying $5 for organic instead of 2$ for regular if they are basically the same because they carry the same bugs that non do

Apple (and the government) can read your iMessages

Apple (and the government) can read your iMessages | world news | Scoop.it
“ How comfortable would you feel knowing Apple could access your texts?”
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
So basically, Apple and the government can read your texts without any security or anything. Knowing myself, there is no reason that ANYONE would want to read my texts, but if you were a wanted person, say goodbye to your freedom because they can track you and find you without any worries. I feel unsafe knowing they are able to do this though. It was a very vague article, but it interested me, because I know that they have been able to do this since forever, but now that people are actually writing about it and making it known, it changes things.

What Is The Greatest Challenge Human Beings Have Ever Faced? - Forbes

What Is The Greatest Challenge Human Beings Have Ever Faced? - Forbes | world news | Scoop.it
“What Is The Greatest Challenge Human Beings Have Ever Faced?”
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
This is crazy to think about, the fact that one of the greatest challenges human beings have ever faced is the fact that in the year 2050, feeding everyone will actually be a struggle. Today, 1/3 of the earth is poor, and many people are starving every day so it isn't a big change. It just means that there will be billions more people on the earth at that time, so it will be even worse. And with the genetically modified foods growing every day, how will the health be of everyone on this planet? Kenzie

Giant jellyfish found in Australia

Giant jellyfish found in Australia | world news | Scoop.it
“Scientists in Australia are working to classify a new species of giant jellyfish that washed up on a beach in Tasmania.”
Via Maria Nunzia @Varvera
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
A family was walking along the beach, and they encountered this giant jellyfish! It is 5 feet in length and is one scientists haven't found a name for yet. The scientists say they have known about the jelly fish for quite a while, but are still coming up with names and specific details about the jelly fish. I think this is really cool, because even though hundreds of species are going extinct, there are still many to find!

“NBCNews.com (blog) Prosecutors seek death penalty for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Fox News Federal prosecutors said Thursday they will seek the death penalty against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the Boston Marathon bombing.”
Via katie neu
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
I think that it is interesting that they don't know for certain if this guy is actually part of the bombing. If he was, I would agree because he hurt so many people that day, not only the ones that were killed or injured. But I would need to know if he was actually part of it, or if he is only just a suspect. It is not fair to kill someone who we don't know if he did it. Find some evidence!!!!

Robot Soldiers Are Coming!

“ The future of combat might not involve humans, but robots! The United States Army is considering lowering brigades from 4000 soldiers to around 3000 soldie...”
Via Kalani Kirk Hausman
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
Soon robots will be taking over the military. They have built four different kinds of robots, ones that can decide who to shoot, and ones that can see from 2 mile radiuses! Also they carry spy equipment, weapons and food and water for soldiers. I think having this would really help the number of people who die, bit then war will become something that is not significant and isn't put high on the list of bad things. We will always win because we have the technology that other countries don't, so we might also put the rest of the world in danger.

There Has Been An Average Of One School Shooting Every Other School Day So Far This Year

There Has Been An Average Of One School Shooting Every Other School Day So Far This Year | world news | Scoop.it
In the 14 school days that have taken place so far in 2014, there have been at least seven school shootings.
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:

There has been an average of one school shooting every other day so far this year. In Univeristies and high schools, people have been showing off thier guns and the only reason that the rates aren't higher are because there have been many near misses. Even eighth graders have been bringing guns to school, and every one who has been reported has been arrested. A 21 year old senior at a University was shot and killed on campus. Of course the Arapahoe shooting just added to the everyother day rates. Oh My Gosh!!! It's really sad that I'm not surprised about this article...

Radioactive Fish at 124 Times 'Safe' Levels Caught Near Fukushim Government research group unearths stunning radioactivity in black sea bream

Radioactive Fish at 124 Times 'Safe' Levels Caught Near Fukushim Government research group unearths stunning radioactivity in black sea bream | world news | Scoop.it
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
A fish with 124 times the level of radiation deemed safe for food consumption was caught near the ravaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. The government-affiliated Fisheries Research Agency announced Friday that a captured black sea bream fish had 12,400 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium, a drastic leap from the maximum of 100 allowed in food, The Asahi Shimbun reports. The fish, caught 37 kilometers south of the plant, was one of 37 black sea bream captured in October and November for research on radiation levels. Two other fish captured also surpassed safe radiation levels. While black sea bream fishing is restricted in some waters near Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, in some areas, including the northern municipalities of Ibaraki Prefecture just south of Fukushima Prefecture, fishers are merely asked to voluntarily refrain from capturing them. My input is that if fish possess this amount of radiation, what else does. What percent of the food that we eat are actually tested for radiation? And how can we stop radiation leaks from getting into the eater and ease that is effecting our food and drinks! We have to be careful of where our food is coming from and we need to keep up with articles like this to know how bad it has gotten

How will ObamaCare affect you? - Your Houston News

“How will ObamaCare affect you? Your Houston News The White House has granted exemptions to labor union and government employee plans, of course, so Americans who work for Main Street businesses will shoulder most of the burden of the new tax.”
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
Obama care isn't just affecting those who signed up for it, but it is also affecting taxpayers and doctors all over. You will have to spend bout 500$ extra per person every year just to account for the mistakes and mis countings that obama care has created. You aren't able to get the same health care, and you aren't getting your preferred plans or hospitals. We are not only losing money, but we are also losing the benefits that we spent years getting.

Shooting, bombings in Iraq kill dozens - Lansing State Journal

Shooting, bombings in Iraq kill dozens - Lansing State Journal | world news | Scoop.it
“Shooting, bombings in Iraq kill dozens Lansing State Journal The Sahwa movement, also known as the Awakening Council, was formed by U.S. forces in 2007 to help fight the insurgents during the height of Iraqi war.”
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
Just as we thought that terrorist attacks were over, there are dozens people either killed or wounded! The people bombing the pedestrians, who were running for their lives, also blew themselves. Police reported 24 deaths and many more wounded. The Iraq war, which I have no stand on, is getting out of control from what I have heard. Of course they have a different religion, so it I hard for me to really connect, but it is really making me sad hearing about all of these death and wounded people.

Government Crisis Is the New Normal

Government Crisis Is the New Normal | world news | Scoop.it
“ Get ready for more brinkmanship in our ever-divided capital”
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
The government needs to get their act together. Even though they have their disagreements, it doesn't mean we have to suffer from them! They need to get over the democrat and republican sides and join together to stop making stupid choices! If this even has a chance of happening again, we need to give them a wake up call and demolish the chances of it.

Driver killed in US Capitol shooting, officials confirm - Los Angeles Times | world news | Scoop.it
“U.S. News & World Report Driver killed in US Capitol shooting, officials confirm Los Angeles Times The shooting, which came just two weeks after a shooter killed a dozen people at the nearby Washington Navy Yard, led Capitol Police to order the U.S.”
Mackenzie Johnston's insight:
I thought this was interesting because I had heard it on the news and I wanted to look it up to see what it was all about. It is really mind boggling, because you have to different sides to be on, and both of them have their highs ands lows. I want to be on the woman's side because she was in a car with her 1 year old unarmed, and the police shot at her. But I want to be on the police's side because she was using her car as a weapon, and she had been registered in a few mental hospitals. It is a tragedy, of course, and I just hope that the baby is in safe hands and that this will blow over soon. Kenzie
