Modern Taurine Cattle descended from small number of Near-Eastern founders

Modern Taurine Cattle descended from small number of Near-Eastern founders | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Ruth Bollongino, Joachim Burger, Adam Powell, Marjan Mashkour, Jean-Denis Vigne and Mark G. Thomas

Archaeozoological and genetic data indicate that taurine cattle were first domesticated from local wild ox (aurochs) in the Near East some 10,500 years ago. However, while modern mitochondrial DNA variation indicates early Holocene founding event(s), a lack of ancient DNA data from the region of origin, variation in mutation rate estimates and limited application of appropriate inference methodologies have resulted in uncertainty on the number of animals first domesticated. A large number would be expected if cattle domestication was a technologically straightforward and unexacting region-wide phenomenon, while a smaller number would be consistent with a more complex and challenging process. We report mitochondrial DNA sequences from 15 Neolithic to Iron Age Iranian domestic cattle and, in conjunction with modern data, use serial coalescent simulation and approximate Bayesian computation to estimate that around 80 female aurochs were initially domesticated. Such a low number is consistent with archaeological data indicating that initial domestication took place in a restricted area and suggests the process was constrained by the difficulty of sustained managing and breeding of the wild progenitors of domestic cattle.

Origins of domestic cattle traced back 10,500 years

Origins of domestic cattle traced back 10,500 years | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

All cattle are descended from as few as 80 animals that were domesticated from wild ox in the Near East some 10,500 years ago, according to a new genetic study.

An international team of scientists were able to conduct the study by first extracting DNA from the bones of domestic cattle excavated in Iranian archaeological sites. These sites date to not long after the invention of farming and are in the region where cattle were first domesticated.

Tesis Doctorales - Universidad de Burgos: Las comunidades campesinas calcolíticas en el Valle Medio del Arlanzón (cal. 3000-1900 a.C.) : transformaciones y procesos históricos | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

The doctoral thesis is integrated into a line of research related to the study of historical processes and their transformations during Late Prehistory in the Spanish Northern Plateau. In this case, the investigation is focused on a particular phase, the Chalcolothic, basically confined to the III millennium BC, whose study in eastern North Plateau was unattractive and problematic because the archaeological record was poor and inexpressive until now. The great amount of information collected in the last 30 years in the Middle Valley Arlanzón has enabled to carry out an original research. In this sense, the thesis presents new theoretical approaches and research techniques which explore the archaeological record linked with Chalcolithic peasant societies. The collected data have allowed the discussion in historical terms of the material evidence left by these communities.

Study Shows Mixing Between Prehistoric Populations of Europe and Africa

Scientists already know from genetic evidence that human populations of Africa and Europe mixed in ancient times, from the days of the Roman Empire through to the slave trade of the colonial period. But evidence of any mixing prior to that has been comparatively less abundant. Now, researchers conclude from a recently completed study (published online on March 27, 2012 in Genome Research) that genetic material was exchanged between Europe and Africa as far back as 11,000 years ago, or more.

Website of the IVth meeting of EMSG, 10, 11, 12th May at Rennes - Site des quatriemes rencontres de l'European Megalithic Studies Group, 10,11, 12 mai à Rennes | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

The IVth meeting of an international workgroup will gather together, in Rennes, from 10 to 12 May 2012, several of the leading European specialists on the theme of megalithic monuments (about twenty speakers from some ten different nationalities). Following the international colloquium at Bougon (Deux-Sèvres) which was held in 2002 (Joussaume, Laporte, Scarre, 2006), meetings of the European Megalithic Studies Group took place in Göteborg in Sweden ( 2004 ), in Seville in Spain ( 2008 ) and in Kiel in Germany ( 2010 ). This will be the first time for more than thirty years that the city of Rennes will welcome a high-level scientific meeting specifically dedicated to the study of megalithic monuments. It is organized within the framework of a program entitled " Megalithic monuments of the Atlantic zone and beyond " which is supported in particular by the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Bretagne. It will comprise two days of oral communications, open to the general public, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Brittany, in Rennes. They will be accompanied by the presentation of posters about current work on megalithic monuments in France, in Europe and in the World.
