GRECE : Stone houses came to light at Koutroulou Magoula | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

A new, important prehistoric site is being unearthed in central Greece.

The third field season of the Koutroulou Magoula Archaeology and Archaeological Ethnography project was completed a few days ago, bringing to light an important and extremely well preserved prehistoric site. The site of Koutroula Magoula, near the villages of Vardali and Neo Monastiri in Fthiotida is one of the largest tell sites in Greece covering of area of around 4 hectares, and rising 6,6 meters above the plan. It was occupied during the Middle Neolithic period (c. 5800-5300 BC) by a community of a few hundred people who constructed elaborate and architecturally sophisticated houses out of stone and mud-brick and with stone-paved under-floors. Some walls are preserved more than one meter in height which is extremely unusual for this time, raising the possibility of entirely stone-built walls, and not just stone foundations, as has been hypothesized to date.

OCEANIE : High Precision U/Th Dating of First Polynesian Settlement

OCEANIE : High Precision U/Th Dating of First Polynesian Settlement | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Previous studies document Nukuleka in the Kingdom of Tonga as a founder colony for first settlement of Polynesia by Lapita peoples. A limited number of radiocarbon dates are one line of evidence supporting this claim, but they cannot precisely establish when this event occurred, nor can they afford a detailed chronology for sequent occupation. High precision U/Th dates of Acropora coral files (abraders) from Nukuleka give unprecedented resolution, identifying the founder event by 2838±8 BP and documenting site development over the ensuing 250 years. The potential for dating error due to post depositional diagenetic alteration of ancient corals at Nukuleka also is addressed through sample preparation protocols and paired dates on spatially separated samples for individual specimens. Acropora coral files are widely distributed in Lapita sites across Oceania. U/Th dating of these artifacts provides unparalleled opportunities for greater precision and insight into the speed and timing of this final chapter in human settlement of the globe.

VIDEO.

Lemercier Olivier's comment, November 9, 2012 3:01 AM

Native Americans that lived in the Mimbres Valley of southwestern New Mexico more than a millennium ago are well known for their distinctive pottery, but now they may have a new claim to fame. They collected fossils — apparently for ritual use in their homes, and probably from a site dozens of kilometres from their village.

INDE : Indus Valley 2,000 years older than thought

The beginning of India's history has been pushed back by more than 2,000 years, making it older than that of Egypt and Babylon. Latest research has put the date of the origin of the Indus Valley Civilisation at 6,000 years before Christ, which contests the current theory that the settlements around the Indus began around 3750 BC.

BULGARIE : At "Europe's Oldest Town," Unusual Fortifications Hint at Prehistoric Riches | World Neolithic | Scoop.it
It's controversially being called Europe's oldest known town. But whatever Solnitsata's place in history, it's becoming clear that the 6,500-year-old Bulgarian site—not far from the continent's earliest known gold horde—had something very much worth protecting.

Researchers announced last week they'd discovered 10-foot-tall (3-meter-tall), 6-foot-thick (1.8-meter-thick) stone walls around the settlement. The find is among the evidence for Solnitsata's oldest-town status—and further proof of an advanced Copper Age Balkan trade network, according to dig leader Vasil Nikolov, a Bulgarian archaeologist.
