GB : Silbury Hill trespassers causing 'spectacular' damage

GB : Silbury Hill trespassers causing 'spectacular' damage | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Trespassers on a rain-soaked monument in Wiltshire are causing "spectacular" damage, an archaeologist has warned.Heavy rain has led to standing water around Silbury Hill in Avebury and very soft ground which is being eroded by people climbing the monument.Jim Leary, an archaeologist for English Heritage, said that illegal climbers on the sodden hill were "leaving some really rather hideous scars". The hill dates back to 2400 BC and is the largest man-made mound in Europe.

Antiquity Vol 86:334, 2012 pp 1055-1067 - C.A. Petrie and K.D. Thomas - The topographic and environmental context of the earliest village sites in western South Asia | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Researchers in several continents have found that agriculture began not in major river valleys but up in the hills, where early farmers tended crops on alluvial fans and improved irrigation by building earth barriers across them. Here the authors reveal a similar process in the hills of Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where early farming villages overlook the plains of the Punjab and Sindh, heartland of the later Indus civilisation. Today this is a troubled border zone, with difficult access on the ground, but our researchers make exemplary use of satellite survey to map the villages in their specific local environments.

MEXIQUE : Who created Las Labradas petroglyphs? | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Fifty miles north of Mazatlan in Sinaloa State, north west Mexico, there is a beach known as Las Labradas where the rocks are covered in over 600 petroglyphs. Now Mexican investigators have uncovered archaeological sites in the vicinity dating to the Archaic Period (2500-1000 BCE) along with another later site that may provide clues to the creators of the Las Labradas petroglyphs.

Fifty kilometers north of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, near the beach where a group of rocks with more than 600 petroglyphs, known as Las Labradas, Mexican investigators discovered an archaeological site of the archaic epoch. In this site, they found 60 arrow and spear heads estimated to be from between 2500 – 1000 BC, this means they were made more than 4000 years ago.

Antiquity: The Giants of Wessex: the chronology of the three largest mounds in Wiltshire, U (Jim Leary & Peter Marshall) | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Recent scientific dating programmes on the three largest mounds in Wiltshire in southern Britain allows the chronology of these prehistoric monuments to be better understood. Silbury Hill (Figure 1), at 31m high the largest prehistoric mound in Europe, was the focus of a multi-million pound archaeological and conservation project after a cavity opened up on the summit in 2000 (Leary & Field 2010; Leary et al. in press).

Antiquity Vol 86:334, 2012 pp 1084-1096 - Zbigniew Kobylinski and others - Confirmation of the first Neolithic rondel-type enclosure in Poland

Antiquity Vol 86:334, 2012 pp 1084-1096 - Zbigniew Kobylinski and others - Confirmation of the first Neolithic rondel-type enclosure in Poland | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

The early Neolithic rondel is a large curvilinear ditched and palisaded enclosure found in increasing numbers in Central Europe. It has close links with the tells of the Danube region, themselves highly suggestive instruments of the earliest Neolithic. Here the authors extend the distribution of rondels further to the north-east, with the discovery and verification of the first example in Poland. As they point out, it is aerial photography that made this advance possible and we can expect many more discoveries, given appropriate investment in the art.

GRECE : Neolithic clay figurine cache unearthed in Greece

GRECE : Neolithic clay figurine cache unearthed in Greece | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Archeologists from the University of Southampton working in collaboration with the Greek Archeological Service and theBritish School at Athens reported the discovery of over 300 Neolithic clay figurines at the Koutroulou Magoula site near the Greek village of Neo Monastiri on Jan. 7, 2013, at the Alpha Galileo website. The figurines date from 5,800 to 5,300 BC. Male, female, and sexless human figures were included in the find. Several of the figurines depict a hybrid human-bird figure. This discovery is unusual because most Neolithicsculpture discovered from the same time periods only depict the female form.

The placement of the statues in almost every structure in the Koutroulou Magoula site as well as the number of figurines found indicate the purpose of figurines was not only as aesthetic art, but also to convey and reflect ideas about a community's culture, society and identity.

Antiquity Vol 86:334, 2012 pp 1097-1111 - Claudia Gerling and others - Immigration and transhumance in the Early Bronze Age Carpathian Basin: the occupants of a kurgan

Antiquity Vol 86:334, 2012 pp 1097-1111 - Claudia Gerling and others - Immigration and transhumance in the Early Bronze Age Carpathian Basin: the occupants of a kurgan | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

You never know until you look. The authors deconstruct a kurgan burial mound in the Great Hungarian Plain designated to the Yamnaya culture, to find it was actually shared by a number of different peoples. The Yamnaya were an influential immigrant group of the Late Copper Age/Early Bronze Age transition. The burials, already characterised by their grave goods, were radiocarbon dated and further examined using stable isotope analysis on the human teeth. The revealing sequence began with a young person of likely local origin buried around or even before the late fourth millennium BC—a few centuries before the arrival of the Yamnaya. It ended around 500 years later with a group of different immigrants, apparently from the eastern mountains. These are explained as contacts built up between the mountains and the plain through the practice of transhumance.

Antiquity: The geometry of north-east Scottish Recumbent Stone Circles measured by experiment (John Hill) | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

The Recumbent Stones Circles (hereafter RSCs) of north-east Scotland are a distinctive class of stone circle, dating to c. 2500–2000 BC (Figure 1). Unlike other stone circles, they are characterised by the presence of a huge recumbent stone enclosed by two tall stones known as flankers. Typically, the rest of the circle stones are then graded, shortening in height away from the flankers, and in many instances there are internal cairns (RCAHMS 2007: 59). A recent re-examination of their remains proposes that an extent population of 71 circles still exists (Welfare 2011).

Antiquity Vol 86:334, 2012 pp 1021-1040 - Timothy Darvill and others - Stonehenge remodelled | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

We are pleased to present the latest account of the sequence of burial and construction at the site of Stonehenge, deduced by its most recent excavators and anchored in time by the application of Bayesian radiocarbon modelling. Five prehistoric stages are proposed, of varied duration, and related by our authors to neighbouring monuments in the Stonehenge environs. While it may never be possible to produce a definitive chronology for this most complex of monuments, the comprehensive and integrated achievement owed to these researchers has brought us much closer to that goal. It is from this firm platform that Stonehenge can begin its new era of communication with the public at large.
