PROCHE ORIENT : Les premiers agriculteurs

PROCHE ORIENT : Les premiers agriculteurs | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

GB : Tests to be carried out on 4,000 year old Racton Man

GB : Tests to be carried out on 4,000 year old Racton Man | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Tests will be carried out on a 4,000-year-old skeleton that was found on farmland in West Sussex 25 years ago. Experts believe the skeleton, which was found with an ornate dagger, could be from the Copper Age or Early Bronze Age - about 2,200-2,100 BC. Archaeologist James Kenny, who led the dig near Chichester in the 1980s, said there were then no funds for tests but a £10,000 project would now begin. He said the bones dated back to the same period as Stonehenge.

IRLANDE : Log boat dating back 4,500 years found in Lough Corrib

IRLANDE : Log boat dating back 4,500 years found in Lough Corrib | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

A 4,500-year-old log boat is among 12 early Bronze Age, Iron Age and medieval craft that have been located in Lough Corrib, along with several Viking-style battle axes and other weapons.

The vessels were discovered by marine surveyor Capt Trevor Northage while mapping the western lake to update British admiralty charts.

Investigative dives were subsequently carried out last summer by the underwater archaeology unit (UAU) of the National Monuments Service, and radiocarbon dating of samples was then conducted.

GB : From athletes to couch potatoes: humans through 6,000 years of farming | World Neolithic | Scoop.it
Human bones are remarkably plastic and respond surprisingly quickly to change. Put under stress through physical exertion – such as long-distance walking or running – bones gain in strength as the fibres are added or redistributed according to where strains are highest.  The ability of bone to adapt to loading is shown by analysis of the skeletons of modern athletes, whose bones show remarkably rapid adaptation to both the intensity and direction of strains.

IRLANDE : 4,500 year-old path discovered near Galway Bay used by Celts

IRLANDE : 4,500 year-old path discovered near Galway Bay used by Celts | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

The discovery of a pathway within a 7,500-year-old ‘drowned forest’ on the Galway shoreline has been hailed by geologists and historians as it suggests human habitation.

The Irish Times reports that the track could be between 3,500 and 4,500 years old.

It was discovered after the recent heavy storms and may have been built when the sea level was rising and was gradually enveloping the forest that pre-dated Galway Bay according to the report.

NUI Galway geologist Prof Mike Williams has researched the ‘drowned forest’ which comprises of a layer of peat and tree stumps uncovered by the winter storms.
