DOMESTICATION : Domestication under the spotlight: Born to be wild

DOMESTICATION : Domestication under the spotlight: Born to be wild | World Neolithic | Scoop.it
Scientists now think wild animals interbred with domesticated ones until quite recently.

Researchers have raised questions over animal domestication, suggesting that the role of intentional breeding was not as significant as traditionally thought in the case of donkeys, camels, alpacas, pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats.

Scientists now think wild animals interbred with domesticated ones until quite recently.

Many concepts about domestication derive from Charles Darwin, whose ideas were strongly influenced by British animal-breeding practices during the 19th century – a period when landowners vigorously pursued systematic livestock improvement.

PROCHE ORIENT : Les premiers agriculteurs | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

DOMESTICATION : The story of animal domestication retold: Scientists now think wild animals interbred with domesticated ones until quite recently | World Neolithic | Scoop.it
A review of recent research on the domestication of large herbivores suggests that neither intentional breeding nor genetic isolation were as significant as traditionally thought. "Our findings show little control of breeding, particularly of domestic females, and indicate long-term gene flow, or interbreeding, between managed and wild animal populations," a co-author said.

DOMESTICATION : Wild, Domesticated Animals Interbred Until Recently

DOMESTICATION : Wild, Domesticated Animals Interbred Until Recently | World Neolithic | Scoop.it
We inherit the idea that animal domestication involved isolation of captive animals from wild species and total human control over breeding and animal care from Darwin. However, recent research on the domestication of donkeys, camelids pigs, cattle, sheep and goats suggests that neither intentional breeding nor genetic isolation were as significant as to the process as traditionally thought.

GB : Tests to be carried out on 4,000 year old Racton Man

GB : Tests to be carried out on 4,000 year old Racton Man | World Neolithic | Scoop.it

Tests will be carried out on a 4,000-year-old skeleton that was found on farmland in West Sussex 25 years ago. Experts believe the skeleton, which was found with an ornate dagger, could be from the Copper Age or Early Bronze Age - about 2,200-2,100 BC. Archaeologist James Kenny, who led the dig near Chichester in the 1980s, said there were then no funds for tests but a £10,000 project would now begin. He said the bones dated back to the same period as Stonehenge.
