Samantha Fuller's insight:

"San Diego, Sacramento and southern California have now instituted transportation plans mandated by the state's Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Law." Although Washingtons poloticions are still debating to mandate greenhouse gas amition cutbacks some states taking action on their own. California plans to create this “sustainable communities strategy”  by "establishing greenhouse gas reduction targets through integrated land use, housing and transportation planning." Most enviromental leaders say this is a step in the right direction, but others worry it won't go far enough.

Contemporary agriculture is burning up our planet

Contemporary agriculture is burning up our planet | World Geography | Scoop.it

A growing number of organic consumers, natural health advocates and climate hawks are taking a more comprehensive look at the fundamental causes of global warming. And its led them to this sobering conclusion: Modern, industrial, monocrop farming are burning up our planet.

How did they reach this conclusion? http://www.nationofchange.org/how-factory-farming-contributes-global-warming-1358786945

AGROECOLOGY: FARMING AND KNOWLEDGE MONOCULTURES ARE MISCONCEIVED

Food needs can be met with a new vision for agriculture and science
In mainstream policy and corporate thinking, scientific knowledge and global markets are considered key for food security. This has resulted in the industrialisation and laboratory research-led intensification of agricultural systems, inputs and food-supply chains.
But intensified systems do not meet global food needs — they mostly suit export markets and corporate interests.... an industrial monoculture model of production — of both food and knowledge — avoids its ecological and social costs, while suppressing more effective sustainable alternatives, and underexploits science's potential versatility.... http://www.scidev.net/global/agriculture/opinion/farming-and-knowledge-monocultures-are-misconceived.html

U.N. - ECOLOGICAL WAKE-UP CALL THAT COUNTERS CORPORATE-FRIENDLY 'FREE' TRADE AND OUR INDUSTRIAL FOOD PRODUCTION

http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2013/09/23-5

The world needs to "wake up before it is too late" and usher in a paradigm shift in agriculture that moves away from industrial agriculture in favor of “mosaics of sustainable regenerative production system" that favor small-scale farmers and local food production, a new report from a UN body states.

The report—WAKE UP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE: MAKE AGRICULTURE TRULY SUSTAINABLE NOW FOR FOOD SECURITY IN A CHANGING CLIMATE (PDF) —http://unctad.org/en/pages/PublicationWebflyer.aspx?publicationid=666

...was written with contributions from over 60 experts, and finds that "urgent and far-reaching action" is needed to address the "collective crisis" of "rural poverty, persistent hunger around the world, growing populations, and mounting environmental concerns."

However, the call from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) flies in the face of the goals laid out by trade deals now being negotiated including the secretive Trans Pacific Partnership....

WHY KANSAS IS RUNNING OUT OF WATER. If you eat corn or wheat in the United States, there's a good chance it was grown with the help of paleowater left over from the last ice age when glaciers covered the Great Plains. And as neat and healthy as that sounds -- paleowater! -- this is not good news.
The Ogallal Aquifer is one of the largest aquifers in the world, running beneath parts of eight states in the central US. And it is this giant, ancient aquifer that is being sucked dry faster than rain can keep up. Put another way, we've nearly used up a million-year-old source of water in the 100 or so years we've been tapping into it for irrigation.

Samantha Fuller's insight:

"Our modern energy-, chemical- and genetically modified organism (GMO)-intensive industrial food and farming systems are the major cause of man-made global warming." Studies show that not only are greenhouse gasses caused by Carbon Dioxide but also by methane and nitrous oxide. Farming includes so many different ways of using fuel form the machinery to the end of food production. Another way farming isn't helping is through deforestation, and wetlands destruction. "When you add it all up, the picture is clear—contemporary agriculture is burning up our planet. And factory farms or, in industry lingo, Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), play a key role in this impending disaster." Climate rise is complex but a few of the top reasons are coal burning, and fossil fuels. To get this under control we would need to stop using 90% of the fosil fuels we are using.

Samantha Fuller's insight:

This videos main point is fossil fuel, but all the things we are using fossil fuels for are growing into climate change problems. The whole world is dependent on fossil fuels. Try to think of one thing that wasn't made using fossil fuels or doesn't use fossil fuels. All these new inventions we have are still running on fossil fuels. The manufactors are adding to much co2 in the air causing tempertures to rise. What we need to do is learn to live without fossil fuels. Changing our energy sourse will change our whole economy.

Samantha Fuller's insight:

Chemical sprays in oregon including Atazine and 24D are effecting the people living in the area. The spray chemials are ment to kill any plants that can take water from the trees. The increased water causes the trees to grow fasting making for quicker harvests. But these herbiceds have effected the people in this area. 41 people in the area had uran samples tested and all of them had these herbicides in their systom. There are many effects that these herbicides can have on a human. It effects the growth development. If children are effected by theses herbisides puberty is effected in many ways. After just 3 days pregnate mice babies were effected. There are some testes being done but herbicides are one of the least tested things right now.

Atrazine and 24d do NOT cause plants to grow faster (it's not a food or growth hormone) They're weed killers that do a very good job at KILLING the broadleaves. I would know, because we spray tons of it every year on our crops.

Samantha Fuller's insight:

"Wildfires last summer burned more than 9 million acres across the U.S." Most of these Fires happened in the West and Southwest. To add on to that the precipitation has not been as high as expected possibly causeing more of these fires in the future. This will also effect the climate change. Dry climates with fire, without rain is already increasing the climate to rise. In the Rocky Mountains snowfall is not as large as in the past. Snow also has been  melting sooner in the spring. These effects are happening all over the world including Russia and Alaska, "Canada, the average amount of land burned annually by wildfires has doubled since the 1970s." Now that these fires are so populare some of the consern is directed to the soil. Parched soil will prevent many new growths of these aburnt forests.

“Fires are simply going to be reintroduced by nature, augmented by climate change,” he said. “I think the land’s going to burn, and then we’ll go from there.” -Westerling

Samantha Fuller's insight:

We think that the climate change has to do with using fossil fuels. And althogh creating a clean sourse of energy is a good plan it doesn't solve everything. Soon we will not be able to create enough energy for everyone who uses it.

Historic Heat Turns Winter to Summer

Historic Heat Turns Winter to Summer | World Geography | Scoop.it

USA:  The unseasonable warmth broke temperature records in more than 1,054 locations between March 13–19, as well daily lows in 627 locations, according to Hamweather. Cities as geographically diverse as Chicago, Des Moines, Traverse City (Michigan), Myrtle Beach, Madison (Wisconsin), Atlantic City, NYC, and Duluth, (Minnesota) all broke records for high temperatures in recent days.  All this after and unseasonable mild winter: http://www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/story/2012-03-19/winter-over-low-snowfall/53656416/1

Via pdjmoo, Seth Dixon
Samantha Fuller's insight:

This shows how temperatures are rising in the United States and Canada in unsual ways during unsusual times. Tempuratures up to 80 degrees in the middle of March. And the temperatures keep changing there is more problems comming up in our climate as time goes by. If we want to turn this climate change back around we can't just stop what we are doing to cause this. We need to change what we are doing before it gets to the point where we can't change it back.

I think its interesting how temperatures are making records. I think it could be a cause of what we put into the atmosphere that can be effecting our abnormal temp. changes.
Diana Ravestein's comment, October 2, 2013 1:48 PM
I agree, I think we need to go back and change what we are doing before it gets to the point where you can't change it back. But first we need to figure out what the problem is, and why our climate is changing so significantly from it.
