A very serious game that can cure the orphan diseases #seriousgames

A very serious game that can cure the orphan diseases #seriousgames | World Changing Games | Scoop.it
In the inspiring tradition of Foldit, the game for determining protein shapes, Fit2Cure crowdsources the problem of finding drugs that can cure the many under-researched diseases of developing countries....
Elle D'Coda's insight:

The article points out - "There about 7,000 rare diseases, fewer than 5% of which have cures. The number of people currently engaged in making drug discoveries is by no means adequate to study all these diseases. A recent gift to Harvard shows the importance that medical researchers attach to filling the gap. As an alternative approach, abstracting the drug discovery process into a game could empower thousands, if not millions, of people to contribute to this process and make discoveries in diseases that get little attention to scientists or pharmaceutical companies" Now then, how to put clinical testing in the hands of the people?

Java Pioneer Chris Melissinos on How Video Games Are Changing The Future Of Our World

Java Pioneer Chris Melissinos on How Video Games Are Changing The Future Of Our World | World Changing Games | Scoop.it
The Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum in Seattle has been hosting The Art of Video Games Smithsonian exhibit since February 16.
Elle D'Coda's insight:

Great article. Melissinos says, "I believe that we’re going to see a progression of games in education move at a faster rate in the next five years than we have in the last twenty [years]. It’s about leveraging the platforms that people are already using. Show me the kid in a first-world country within that space that doesn’t have access to a compute platform within their own personal lives. As the price point comes down and the democratization of the technology moves up its all becoming faster, cheaper and more accessible. Now we can have this wonderful platform to engage our students and create new experiences that teach them faster, better and more broadly than ever before. I think the education system needs to catch up with that. It’s like a train without brakes — it’s coming. You’re not going to stop the onslaught and the technology. So we need to understand how to deal with it, how can we use it to our best advantage to teach. But not just teach, to educate our children in society."

Why We Play: How Our Desire For Games Shapes Our World | World Changing Games | Scoop.it
Psychologists and sociologists are only now beginning to understand why the human ability to play is so powerful.

After collecting several years’ worth of behavioral data and conducting numerous in-house studies from companies like Sony, Activision, and Warner Bros. Does play have to be the opposite of work?

Does play have to be the opposite of work? | World Changing Games | Scoop.it

Playing a game is akin to "a voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles" says Bernard Suits in his 1978 book The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia. We often struggle to motivate our employees to overcome necessary obstacles, so putting more roadblocks in the way may seem like madness. But games play on our need for mastery, our desire to do well and our drive to "beat the game".

Elle D'Coda's insight:

A well-known Human Resources publication makes the case that games belong in a productive office setting.
