We know beer contributes quite a lot to America’s economy, from the brewers who make it, the retailers who sell it, and the bartenders who serve it. The Beer Institute‘s Beer Serves America gives a great overview of the economic impact of the beer industry as a whole, with breakdowns of direct and indirect impacts, and also by related industries that support the beer industry.

 

But recently the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) published online their own map of how beer distributors are “Fueling Jobs, Generating Economic Growth & Delivering Value to Local Communities.” Not surprisingly, it’s a lot, too, with 130,000 jobs and $54 billion for the entire United States....  [click headline for more]

Craft beer industry posts more gains

Craft beer industry posts more gains | International Beer News | Scoop.it

The U.S. craft beer industry saw production volume jump 16 percent in the first half of the year, the Brewers Association reported Monday. Craft brewers sold 12.2 million barrels, up from 10.6 million during the first half of last year.

The Boulder, Colo.-based trade group also reported that there are now 3,739 breweries operating in the country, an increase of 699 from the same period last year. That number will continue to grow, as the association says there are 1,755 breweries in planning...[click headline for more]

On June 20, 2015, a new face entered, or rather re-entered, the growing craft beer scene in Yunnan. The Shangri-la Highland Craft Brewery, founded and chaired by Songtsen Gyalzur (known as Sonny), officially opened for business. Though hailing from similarly mountainous Switzerland, Sonny, a Tibetan, has deep roots in Shangri-la, from where his parents emigrated.

Bartender Lizz Hutcherson is serving more happy customers lately at Green Bench Brewery. Until two weeks ago, she had to turn away out-of-staters toting growlers, upset they couldn't fill the large containers with 64 ounces of the local flavor.

"It would happen for me at least twice a week," she said while taking a late lunch on a slow Friday afternoon. "A lot of eye rolls."

Now, a new state law allowing sales and refills of the 64-ounce containers is not only quenching customers' thirsts but also helping brewers at the cash registers. Before this year, Florida had already legalized 32 and 128-ounce growlers, but the 64-ounce growler remained confoundingly illegal.
