Brash brewed by a Texan but illegal in Lone Star State - NOLA.com | International Beer News | Scoop.it

Call a beer Brash, you don't expect a timid brew. True to it's name, the beers by Texan Ben Fullelove are loaded with hops and high in alcohol. "I'm not trying to make anything middle of the road," Fullelove said. "There are already a lot of pales and ambers."

Fullelove also owns the Houston bar Petrol Station, which specializes in craft beer. One beer brand that won't find at the Petrol Station, however, is Fullelove's own.

Beer: The latest cash crop for Maryland farmers

Beer: The latest cash crop for Maryland farmers | International Beer News | Scoop.it

Tom Barse’s 47-acre Stillpoint Farm in Mt. Airy, Maryland looks like an average agricultural operation. Its fields are rich with crops, while sheep and horses graze in the pastures. However, Barse’s most lucrative crop is actually beer.

In the summer of 2012, Barse opened the small-scale Milkhouse Brewery on a small hill near his house. Over the next six months, the longtime home brewer produced 80 barrels of beer using hops, wheat, barley, and other products grown on the farm.... [click headline for more]

Will Anheuser-Busch buy these craft beer brewers next?

Will Anheuser-Busch buy these craft beer brewers next? | International Beer News | Scoop.it

Start your breathing exercises and pick your mantras now, craft beer groupies: Anheuser-Busch InBev is going to buy another brewery.

We don’t say this because it has acquired four craft breweries since 2011. We don’t say this because we’ve spent more time speaking with Anheuser-Busch craft division head Andy Goeler since November than we have members of our own family (sorry, Aunt Lin). We don’t say it because of the speed with which it acquired Bend, Ore.-based 10 Barrel and Seattle’s Elysian Brewing... [click headline for more]

Is Sam Adams Too Big to Be Craft Beer?

Is Sam Adams Too Big to Be Craft Beer? | International Beer News | Scoop.it

Craft beer is big. Independent craft breweries saw their collective sales grow 20 percent last year, and they’re slowly taking away sales from the giants. Overall beer sales are flat, but locally brewed India Pale Ales are killing it.

Craft beer is also small. As a group, craft breweries still comprise only about 8 to 14 percent of the overall beer market... [click headline for more]

Cases of light beer are the go-to option for tailgating parties around the country. The largest advertisers on the Super Bowl, the biggest advertising platform on television, are consistently light beers. Even though in recent years A-B InBev reports slipping slaes, Bud Light is still the official beer sponsor of the NFL, a title it shelled out millions for each year. Dry Dock Brewing's Cool Lime Lager isn't the biggest joke-beer that ended up being popular enough to package: that honor belongs to the Wynkoop's Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout, which started as an April Fool's Day prank before becoming a full-fledged part of the brewery's canned lineup. Why it's necessary to keep the craft in craft beer | International Beer News | Scoop.it

There have been a lot of emotions flying around the Internet lately.

Perhaps the anger and hurt feelings began when Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev announced its acquisition of Elysian Brewing Co. in late January 2015. These emotions intensified with the commercial Budweiser ran during the Super Bowl, belittling craft beer brewers and drinkers everywhere.

A war of words on social media and in articles ensued, further fanning the flames of verbal ugliness being spewed from every direction... [click headline for more]

China’s Beer Industry Goes Flat With Anti-Corruption Campaign

China’s Beer Industry Goes Flat With Anti-Corruption Campaign | International Beer News | Scoop.it

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s war against corruption is snarling sales of everything in its path, from fireworks to baijiu to mooncakes and even Wal-Mart products. The latest victim: beer.

The choice drink among the masses saw production fall in 2014 for the first time in a decade, state-run China Daily reports. Over the full year, total beer production fell 1%, but in a sign that the effects of Mr. Xi’s campaign are getting stronger, output fell 17% in the month of December alone, the paper says, citing chinaibeer.com, the website of the Beer Professional Committee at the China Food Industry Association... Craft beer industry reacts to Budweiser Super Bowl ad

Craft beer industry reacts to Budweiser Super Bowl ad | International Beer News | Scoop.it

Since most Super Bowls don’t end with boneheaded decisions to not use one of the best running backs in the NFL from the one-yard line, most of the water cooler talk the next day usually centers on the barrage of commercials. With commercial prices for this year’s championship game hitting $4.5 million in some instances, it’s important for companies to deliver a powerful message during the allotted time slot. Budweiser’s ads are always a big part of Super Bowl Sunday, and while they usually run the gamut from pithy pitches to heartwarming tales of puppies and Clydesdales, the “Brewed the Hard Way” spot raised a few eyebrows in the craft beer community... An English village needs its pub – ask a novelist

An English village needs its pub – ask a novelist | International Beer News | Scoop.it

In the tiny Sussex village of Ripe, at the back of St John the Baptist churchyard, the novelist Malcolm Lowry lies buried. According to the inquest, the volatile author of Under the Volcano had taken to drinking gin at home after being banned from The Lamb, Ripe’s only pub. Lowry had difficulty walking in his final days, and banishment from his local must have been devastating. It is a dark irony that he might not have died from alcohol poisoning had he been allowed a civilised drink... [click headline for more]
